How Broad Street Maps is building a new kind of company to boost global health

From the beginning, Anna Clements, Hannah Judge, and Isabel Shaw, all bonded over the same majors at Middlebury College in Vermont. Who knew that the intersection of their two passions in Geography and Global Health would lead them to start a business together?

They all realized that geographic tools and analytics are extremely underutilized in public health, so this inspired Anna and Hannah to start designing projects, pilot them, and eventually build out their idea to launch Broad Street Maps in 2012.

The Seattle-based startup Broad Street Maps makes maps that improve the delivery of healthcare to people in need. They work collaboratively with NGOs and community health organizations in five countries. Their mapping projects have helped NGOs in two ways: as tools for decision-making and as compelling, visual communication materials.

We were lucky to go behind the scenes in their South Lake Union office with these entrepreneurial geographers. Check out the interview to learn the inspiration behind their company’s name and their obsession with global health.
