Flatiron School’s Houston campus offers scholarships from Facebook

A group of 25 students in the Houston area will be awarded scholarships the Flatiron School, courtesy of Facebook’s Community Boost initiative.

The announcement of the scholarships comes as Flatiron School unveiled its newest campus, at Houston’s newly opened WeWork 708 Main Street. It’s the fourth Flatiron School location since the Manhattan-based coding academy was acquired six months ago by WeWork. The others are in London, Brooklyn, and Washington, DC.

The scholarships will cover all costs for the 15-week course in full-stack web development. Students can apply on the Flatiron School website.

The Houston Urban League will be working with Flatiron School to attract a diverse group of applicants from the local community. It will also provide career training and job placement support for graduates.

“This is an exciting chance to continue expanding educational opportunities to underserved communities, and to further drive our commitment to increasing diversity in the tech industry,” says Flatiron School founder Adam Enbar.

Even before WeWork opened its first Houston location at the end of 2017, it had already established a presence there. After Hurricane Harvey devastated the city, more than two dozen WeWork staffers from around the country helped locals dig out their homes from the rubble.

“In Houston we’ve worked with the city government and local partners to invest in communities to create economic mobility and opportunity,” says Enbar.

The opening of Flatiron School’s Houston location is not the company’s only announcement. It’s debuting a data science course beginning in June at its London and New York locations. It’s also adding night and weekend courses for WeWork staff and members, and giving all of its online students access to hot desk memberships at WeWork.

With partnerships with 2U (an online education platform that streamlines access to graduate-level courses at top universities) and SoFi (which helps people save money by refinancing their student loans), WeWork is committed to make learning a lifelong process.
