After being outfitted with Esper Hands, a self-learning bionic prosthesis, Volodymyr regained his independence\u2014going back to work, driving a car, and even picking up painting for the first time. Recently, he held his first art exhibition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And it\u2019s all because of the technology from Esper Bionics, an innovative startup based in New York City on a mission to stretch human abilities and fulfill the lives of billions of people around the globe.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube cmw-negative-margin-right-20 wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Meet the Future of Prosthetics: Esper Bionics | Made at WeWork\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/D8vSfH1cOUo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>The minds behind the bionics&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2007, Dima Gazda\u2014cofounder and CEO of Esper Bionics\u2014was a doctor working at the crossroads of medicine and engineering. That year, he met a young woman who had lost her hand in a car accident. This encounter inspired Gazda to research human augmentation technologies and focus on developing wearable prosthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fast-forward to 2018, when Gazda met Anna Believantseva, Esper Bionic\u2019s cofounder and COO. At the time, Believantseva oversaw product launches on platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo. Believantseva and Gazda met at one of these fateful launches, where Gazda shared his vision for a human augmentation startup. Believantseva was all in, and the duo dove into market research.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By 2019, they had added engineering expertise to their team, Ihor Ilchenko, Esper Bionic\u2019s cofounder and VP of Engineering, and developed their first prototype. That prototype would win first place at a startup competition the same year\u2014and change lives going forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>Revolutionizing next-gen prosthetics<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Today, Esper Bionics isn\u2019t just building cutting-edge prosthetics; it\u2019s pushing boundaries. \u201cWe believe that human capacity and abilities are underestimated,\u201d says Gazda. \u201cWe aim to unleash them.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To do that, they\u2019ve created a three-part bionic system that advances human capabilities and removes human limitations:&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Esper Hand<\/strong>: A self-learning bionic prosthesis using AI and ML to predict and adapt to user movements intuitively.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Esper Control<\/strong>: A non-invasive brain-computer interface with advanced sensors to monitor prosthetic movement.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Esper Platform<\/strong>: Cloud-based AI software that analyzes sensor data and learns and customizes prosthetic control for each user.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBuilding advanced wearables and learning to harness the power of AI are just the first steps to Esper Bionics\u2019 endgame,\u201d adds Gazda.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized cmw-negative-margin-right-20 cmw-feature-image-extra-width cmw-margin-top-20 cmw-margin-bottom-20\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"840\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/gifts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2025\/01\/Esper04.jpg?resize=840%2C500\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1198\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:600px;height:400px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>Putting life back in people\u2019s hands<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>At the helm of the bionic system is Esper Hand, a bionic hand for those born without hands or who have had amputations. Controlled by muscle signals, Esper Hand adapts to patterns over time, becoming intuitive and effortless. For example, if someone wants to grab an object, Esper Hand will recognize the situation and propose the needed grip, explains Believantseva.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Esper Hand is also the smallest hand on the market, consciously developed to be as close as possible to the anatomical elegance of the human hand, says Believantseva. She explains how, after traumatic amputations, many people experience psychological distress adapting to their new limbs, and traditional robo-hands with producer logos often exacerbate the alienation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And while the Esper Hand is not yet as dexterous as biological hands, Believantseva and Gazda believe that one day, it will be. \u201cWe aim to make this prosthetic as smart as possible,\u201d says Believantseva. Thus far, their purpose has led to some unimaginable results.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alexis, a medical doctor, lost his hand during the war in Ukraine while trying to evacuate people from the front line. Four months later, he got the Esper Hand prosthesis\u2014and was back at the front line. When those he was evacuating also lost their legs or hands, Alexis would tell them,<em> \u201cYou can do whatever you want\u2026See, I&#8217;m using a prosthetic hand, and I&#8217;m here saving your life.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized cmw-negative-margin-right-20\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"840\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/gifts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2025\/01\/Esper03.jpg?resize=840%2C500\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1197\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:600px;height:400px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>Going global and expanding their reach with WeWork<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The goal of going from a bionic device to a fully developed human augmentation ecosystem needed a home. For Esper Bionics, that home became WeWork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While Esper Hand was developed and manufactured in Kyiv, Ukraine, Gazdav explains how their goal was to introduce it to the US market. \u201cWe launched the HQ in New York City in May 2022 to be close to the clinicians and our users.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Setting up a workspace at WeWork stateside was the final step towards Esper Bionics becoming a distributed team, adds Believantseva. The new space allowed the US team to collaborate more closely, connect with new clients in a bigger market, and gain valuable publicity\u2014publicity that WeWork would celebrate alongside the startup.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Esper Bionics was featured on the cover of TIME, Gazda remembers walking into the office and a community team member handing him a framed copy of the cover\u2014<em>several days before the magazine came out.<\/em> \u201cOne community member had friends at TIME,\u201d recalls Gazda. \u201cHe approached them, got the journal, framed it in a beautiful black frame, and they gave us this gift; it\u2019s something we&#8217;ll always remember.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since the opening of their HQ in New York, Esper Bionics\u2019 US team hit significant milestones, including getting Esper Hand listed as an FDA-approved prosthesis, receiving <a href=\"https:\/\/en.ain.ua\/2024\/06\/28\/esper-bionics-raises-5m-investment-to-scale-ai-bionic-prosthetics\/#:~:text=Ukrainian%20developer%20of%20bionic%20prostheses%20Esper%20Bionics%20raises%20a%20%245M%20investment,-28%20June%2C%202024&amp;text=The%20Ukrainian%2Dfounded%20company%20Esper,system%2C%20the%20company%20informed%20AIN.\">a new round of investment<\/a>, and partnering with the US O&amp;P clinics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThough preparing for each was a real challenge, having a comfortable and steady workplace allowed us to focus on those goals,\u201d says Gazda.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized cmw-negative-margin-right-20\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"840\" height=\"500\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/gifts\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/42\/2025\/01\/Esper02.jpg?resize=840%2C500\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1196\" style=\"object-fit:cover;width:600px;height:400px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:35px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"font-size:28px\"><strong>Finding a workspace that connects functionality with design&nbsp;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:10px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Esper Bionics chose a workspace that aligned with its ambitions. \u201cWe love the way WeWork combines intentional design and practical functionality, just like our products,\u201d Believantseva shares. The seamless balance between private areas for focused work, collaborative spaces that foster collaboration, and vast networking opportunities has helped their team thrive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since joining the community in 2022, WeWork has become the hub of business operations for Esper Bionics. \u201cAll things regarding company finances, working with investors, and partnering with clinicians happen here,\u201d says Gazda. \u201cWe also keep our stock of demo-ready Esper Hand prostheses here, coming in handy for events and partner requests or for when CNN visited our office to film our story.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The supportive environment allows Esper Bionics to focus on revolutionizing prosthetics while leaving logistics\u2014security, office maintenance, utilities, and even international deliveries\u2014to the WeWork team. \u201cThere are plenty of ups and downs when you\u2019re on the cutting edge of technology,\u201d says Gazda, \u201chaving an office you can rely on puts us ahead of the game.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Believantseva, the workspace also offers moments of respite. \u201cMy favorite part of the day is when we come to the office early in the morning,\u201d she shares. \u201cNo one is here.
