{"id":7187,"date":"2014-05-27T14:00:00","date_gmt":"2014-05-27T18:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/?p=7187"},"modified":"2020-03-30T19:07:26","modified_gmt":"2020-03-30T23:07:26","slug":"hey-startups-time-get-room","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/professional-development\/hey-startups-time-get-room","title":{"rendered":"Hey startups: It&#8217;s time to get a room"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Time together as a small team at the start of a new company is crucial.<\/p>\n<p>Those early days, when there is a great deal that\u2019s undecided, and the \u201cmedium term\u201d is measured in weeks, not months, are the days when you set the tone for who you are, who you aren\u2019t, and what you\u2019re trying to achieve.<\/p>\n<p>This first year of\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/makeshift.io\/\">Makeshift<\/a>\u00a0we\u2019ve all been co-located, with hardly any remote working going on. That was a decision we took right at the beginning. It\u2019s hard to see how you can successfully create a company unless you\u2019re physically in the same space together. But now we\u2019re growing, we\u2019ve got a longer view of what needs to be done. We\u2019re investing in the products that we\u2019ve made (the ones that people are using, anyway!) Is it time for us to reconsider our \u201cyou\u2019ve got to be in the room\u201d decision?<\/p>\n<h3>Synchronicity<\/h3>\n<p>No matter how much people tell me that remote working is brilliant, I\u2019ve never managed to have a Skype call that wasn\u2019t just<i>weird<\/i>\u00a0or had some kind of technical problem during it. I\u2019ve also never really managed to work out what\u2019s really going on at the studio unless I\u2019m actually there. And I always end up feeling pretty stressed out if I work from home. Like I have to prove that I\u2019m doing something.<\/p>\n<p>Because we\u2019ve all been in the same room together we\u2019ve got the opportunity to have good face-to-face conversations, to draw pictures, to discuss things at a much wider bandwidth than you can manage remotely.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve made it so the working day hasn\u2019t been a weird collection of failed Skype chats and emails. We get NTLK\u2019s famous laugh, Dan\u2019s wry observations, and a peppering of my dad jokes for a start! Face-to-face conversations and time together in a space are important to me, and I feel like I\u2019m enjoying my work a lot more if I have other people around me to share the experience.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>Being in the same room means we\u2019ve got the opportunity to discuss things at a much wider bandwidth.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>I\u2019m going to the\u00a0<i>studio<\/i><\/h3>\n<p>I think of the room that houses Makeshift as a\u00a0<i>studio<\/i>, not an\u00a0<i>office<\/i>. When I go to work I tell my kids \u201cI\u2019m going to the studio\u201d. A studio is a little like a salon\u2014we\u2019re open, we have a\u00a0<i>psychic location<\/i>, people drop by, we host events and I\u2019m hoping this year to increase all of that.<\/p>\n<p>The reason we\u2019ve chosen to go down a \u201cstudio\u201d route, is that early on in your company, what you\u2019re trying to prototype is an idea about what your company will be in the future. It may be unconscious, but every decision you make defines the kind of company you will become.<\/p>\n<h3>The initial conditions<\/h3>\n<p>I often talk about paying attention to \u201cinitial conditions\u201d. If something is bugging you at the beginning, it\u2019ll probably turn into a huge issue later. And conversely, if you find a strong idea that you can rally around, it will set you off on a good course. For us, it\u2019s \u201cgive a leg up to the little guy\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019ve chosen \u201cstudio\u201d as our working model because it says a lot about what we want to build, and it\u2019s the appropriate way (we think) for us to succeed. Nick talks about trying to create \u201cThe Eames Studio of the 21st Century\u201d and I tend to agree.<\/p>\n<p>A studio has people in a room together as a big component. You think that you have wide bandwidth via broadband Internet or Ethernet? We go for really wide bandwidth by being face-to-face.<\/p>\n<p>The initial conditions here, and the tone we are setting are that we are not so techno-utopian that we think that human tasks and passion can be Trello-boarded and Gantt-charted to the point where we can happily sit at our desk at home and code and code and code without seeing another soul for days on end. A studio is an important part of what we\u2019re trying to build.<\/p>\n<h3>The developing conditions<\/h3>\n<p>The initial conditions are just one thing to think about, however. We\u2019re a year in now, and as we\u2019ve grown, our \u201cmid-term\u201d has started moving from weeks to months. We can see some distance ahead. It\u2019s not just quick hacks now, it\u2019s building features, listening to people and how they use our products, and having a rhythm. We\u2019re just at the point where it might be time to change up.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps not everyone needs to be in the studio every day. Perhaps we can be more effective as a team by clarifying the things we\u2019re working on, documenting them in Trello and having Hipchat conversations so everything is open. Perhaps it\u2019s time to get a copy of the 37 Signals book \u201cRemote\u201d that people have been talking about. We\u2019re not going to go the Github \/ WordPress route and only have remote people, but there\u2019s room for remote working in a studio model. I guess now\u2019s when we find out how it works.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been through a similar transition, I\u2019d be interested in hearing how you managed to keep the culture of the studio as well as gained the benefits of people being productive and also not in the room with you.
