{"id":66808,"date":"2019-10-07T15:16:21","date_gmt":"2019-10-07T19:16:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/?p=66808"},"modified":"2020-09-03T05:53:14","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T09:53:14","slug":"how-one-3d-printing-company-is-fighting-plastic-waste","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/how-one-3d-printing-company-is-fighting-plastic-waste","title":{"rendered":"How one 3D-printing company is fighting plastic waste"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>As the world continues to seek solutions for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/how-to-make-your-workspace-a-plastic-free-zone\">excessive plastic problem<\/a>\u2014the one that\u2019s polluting oceans, leaching toxins into groundwater, and releasing gases into the air as it collects in landfills\u2014one company has found a futuristic-sounding way to make a change. <a href=\"https:\/\/re3d.org\/\">Re:3d<\/a>, an Austin-based 3D-printing company and member at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/university-park--austin--TX\">WeWork University Park<\/a>, manufactures a line of large, affordable 3D printers that can use ground-up plastic waste to create something entirely new. Devices from re:3d have transformed water bottles into <a href=\"https:\/\/re3d.org\/water-bottle-board\/\">skateboards<\/a>, printed modular floor systems for <a href=\"https:\/\/re3d.org\/good-works-studio\/\">refugee camps<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/re3d.org\/reconstructing-aircraft-using-3d-printing-ben-gimbert\/\">reconstructed an aircraft<\/a> with missing parts.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/10\/20190411-RE3D-Web-29.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66974\"\/><figcaption>The Gigabot, a 3D printer by re:3D.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1319\" height=\"900\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/10\/Re3d.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66976\"\/><figcaption>Plastic water bottles are collected and then shredded to feed to the 3D printer.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The possibilities for 3D printing go as far as the imagination. Samantha Snabes, the founder of re:3D, says she\u2019s inspired by the innovative ways people have used her technology. Snabes is particularly interested in how 3D printing with discarded materials can help fuel a circular economy. Years ago, when traveling throughout Nicaragua and Mexico with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ewb-usa.org\/\">Engineers Without Borders<\/a>, she and her team found that communities were frustrated by the high rate of unemployment, the importance placed on imported goods, and the dizzying amount of plastic waste not being collected. \u201cThe people we met were really innovative,\u201d she says, explaining how focusing on economic independence in addition to sustainability felt crucial. \u201cWhen we were thinking about how the groups we work with were really brilliant and lacked access to tools, we came up with this concept of the 3D printer to help people work independently to create something from waste,\u201d she says.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1500\" height=\"1000\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/10\/20190411-RE3D-Web-42.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66983\"\/><figcaption>Plastic pellets created from wasted materials, like water bottles.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1000\" height=\"1500\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/10\/20190411-RE3D-Web-12.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-66978\"\/><figcaption>Pellets are poured into the printer and melted for printing use.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In January 2018, re:3d won WeWork\u2019s Creator Awards, earning <a href=\"https:\/\/re3d.org\/wework-gave-us-a-million-dollars\/\">$1 million<\/a>, which the company used to refine its pellet-printer prototype to accept ground-up plastic water bottles and to engineer a grinder, dryer, and feeder system to provide users with the independence to manufacture from waste onsite. The team continues to refine its prototypes and capabilities, Snabes says. \u201cSome of the biggest producers of plastic waste are manufacturing companies,\u201d she says, explaining that they discard a ton of plastic trim. The re:3d team printed about a dozen ergonomic coffee-bean-picking buckets for a coffee farm in Puerto Rico to improve the harvesting. The buckets, which are printed from pellets made from plastic water bottles, are a comfortable alternative to those coffee farmers have used in the past. \u201cWith traditional coffee harvesting, you use a woven basket or five-gallon bucket,\u201d Snabes explains, adding that the woven baskets, which break easily, can be difficult to clean, while the five-gallon bucket can bruise the beans and cause a ton of discomfort for those out in the field.
