Post tax season is the perfect time to reevaluate your financial support team. \u00a0There are countless financial advisors in the United States.\u00a0 Considering each person\u2019s personality, fee structure, communication style, brand and small print, it is enough to make your head spin.\u00a0 To make things easier for you, here are my top five tips for choosing a financial advisor.<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0It is all about trust<\/strong><\/h3>\n

You need to feel comfortable with your advisor.\u00a0 50% of a working relationship is about the services he\/she can provide for you and 50% of it is about how you connect with the person.\u00a0 Are you inspired to meet with your advisor on a regular basis?\u00a0 Are you motivated to do the footwork necessary between appointments?\u00a0 Do you actually like and trust your advisor?\u00a0 The answer to all of these questions should be yes, otherwise, keep looking.<\/p>\n

2.\u00a0Get a personal referral<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Find people in your immediate community whose relationship to money you respect.\u00a0 Inquire about who they use for financial planning, taxes, investment advice and estate planning.\u00a0 Ask them what they like about the individual, the firm, and the service.<\/p>\n

3.\u00a0Know what you want<\/strong><\/h3>\n

It is worthwhile to write down the qualities you are looking for in an advisor.\u00a0 Here are some to consider: warm, friendly, smart, licensed, convenient office hours\/location, expertise in your areas of need, specific gender, and easy to communicate with.\u00a0 It is equally important to know what your immediate goals are: create a monthly budget, design an annual plan, project your finances 5-10 years out, reallocate assets, save for retirement, save for college, refinance your home, etc.<\/p>\n

4.\u00a0Do your research<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Check out at least three different advisors whose services meet your needs.\u00a0 Read their websites, read the paperwork he\/she gives you, look them up on Google, Yelp, Facebook, Twitter and Linked In.<\/p>\n

5.\u00a0Be prepared with questions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Here are some to consider:<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 How much time should I expect to commit in order to get the most benefit?<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is your approach to (insert your current needs)?<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Who is your target audience?<\/p>\n

\u00b7\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 What is your fee structure and how will this change over time?<\/p>\n
