{"id":57707,"date":"2019-07-31T11:48:53","date_gmt":"2019-07-31T15:48:53","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/?p=57707"},"modified":"2020-09-03T05:53:03","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T09:53:03","slug":"the-software-engineer-who-bends-light","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/employee-spotlight\/the-software-engineer-who-bends-light","title":{"rendered":"The software engineer who bends light"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong><em>S<\/em><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/tag\/superpower-on-the-side\"><strong><em>uperpower on the Side<\/em><\/strong><\/a><em> features WeWork team members and how they spend their time when they\u2019re not at work.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2015, Tom Clark was at a Halloween party at New York\u2019s Hammerstein Ballroom when he saw something he still hasn\u2019t forgotten: a man wearing a giant plastic acrylic cat head.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark was so intrigued that he went over and asked the wearer about his look\u2014and learned the mask was made by an artist named <a href=\"http:\/\/www.maxsteinerdesign.com\/\">Max Steiner<\/a> and had a name, <a href=\"http:\/\/alex-k-colby.squarespace.com\"><em>Kung Pow Meow<\/em><\/a>. But what Clark, a principal software engineer at WeWork, really wanted to know was how Steiner had managed to give the feline figure its striking prismatic-rainbow look.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt got stuck in my head. I was like, How do I make this?\u201d says Clark, 37. \u201cWhat if I made it join perfectly together? I knew I would need, like, a crazy precision for that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, Clark knew just the thing. After studying theoretical mathematics in college, he moved to California to work in construction. While on the West Coast, Clark also got a job as a technical service technician for a dental supply company. It was there that he became familiar with Computer Numerical Control (CNC) Milling, a form of drilling done by computer that allows near-perfect precision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cModern dentistry uses [similar] CNC machines to make the crowns that go in your mouth,\u201d says Clark. \u201cFeel how smooth your teeth are\u2014that\u2019s the level of precision you can get.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inspired by Steiner\u2019s work, Clark started playing around, using a programming language called Grasshopper to design shapes that the computer would then cut out of acrylic. To get the prismatic rainbow-like colors he\u2019d seen on the mask, he covered each piece with a special light-reflecting film. (Clark found he preferred diffraction grating film, which splits white light into rainbow light via a grid of tiny etched lines.) Then he used the individual pieces he\u2019d made to construct orbs modeled after various geometric objects, like a truncated icosahedron\u2014also known as the soccer-ball shape.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/TomClarkBody-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57729\"\/><figcaption>Principal software engineer Tom Clark uses a programming language to design shapes that a computer cuts out of acrylic. Photographs by Katelyn Perry\/The We Company<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cMy background is in mathematics, so I\u2019m a giant nerd,\u201d says Clark. \u201cI started reading about how I could create arbitrary shapes using CNC milling and put them together to form a closed object. I found this brand-new field of mathematics called discrete differential geometry. The thing I\u2019m interested in with my art is essentially the same mathematics and state-of-the-art thinking that goes into architecture.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clark showcases some of the art he\u2019s made on his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/tomclarkmakesart\/?igshid=1enspjgg9jg0m\">Instagram account<\/a>. He completed his first piece in 2017, and in addition to the prismatic geometric sculptures and orbs, he\u2019s also crafted wearable items like mirrored masks and gloves. But that\u2019s not all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the help of his girlfriend, Becky Jo Morrow, and two WeWork colleagues\u2014digital designer Deena Edwards and staff software engineer Scott Penrose\u2014Clark also built a large-scale electronic LED structure he affectionately refers to as the \u201cGlome\u201d (a dome that glows). He first debuted it in 2017 at the annual art and music festival Gratitude Migration hosted by yet another WeWork colleague, senior product manager Ophra Shiffeldrim. The 18-foot geodesic dome, which Clark has since set up at other events, features 4,368 programmable LED lights and can fit up to 30 people inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like a magical teepee,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Earlier this year Clark started collaborating with another WeWork employee, senior researcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/newsroom\/posts\/how-someone-really-bad-at-drawing-creates-stunning-art\">Andrew Heumann<\/a>, who he describes as \u201cone of the best Grasshopper engineers in the world.\u201d When Clark realized they both worked at WeWork, he reached out. The first project they worked on together was a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/ByHKWebhFx5\/?utm_source=ig_web_copy_link\">disco ball<\/a> Clark made for his girlfriend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/TomClarkBody2-571x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-57732\"\/><figcaption><br>&nbsp;Clark says, \u201cThe thing I\u2019m interested in with my art is essentially the same mathematics and state-of-the-art thinking that goes into architecture.\u201d <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAndrew is extremely smart,\u201d says Clark. \u201cI\u2019ll have something stuck in my head, I just don\u2019t know how to express myself in the tooling in Grasshopper, and he\u2019s a whiz at it. So it\u2019s this really beautiful collaboration. I consider him a mentor.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Working with Heumann, he adds, also \u201cforces me to think about the next phase of my evolution and the things I\u2019m interested in.\u201d For him the fun isn\u2019t only in building the thing but exploring ways to interact with what he creates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI like to use the thing,\u201d says Clark. \u201cI like to play with the orb and see how it reacts to different kinds of light. It\u2019s more about that discovery phase.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eventually, Clark hopes to be able to express himself in even more creative ways, moving away from the rigid shapes he\u2019s working with now to be able to generate sculptures and shapes with more curved and swooping features.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201c[I want] people to look at [the things I make] and think, \u2018Oh my god, that\u2019s cool. What am I looking at?\u2019\u201d says Clark. \u201cMore than anything else it\u2019s the reaction that people have like, \u2018What the hell is this thing?\u2019 It kind of breaks your brain.\u201d<br><br><em>Interested in a career at WeWork?
