David Ganulin<\/a> is the CEO and founder of KettleBell Concepts<\/a>, which launched in 2002 and has trained over 5,000 of the industry’s kettlebell instructors. We sat down with the fitness-minded entrepreneur\u00a0for Do What You Love \u2014 a series that showcases the entrepreneurs behind startups and small businesses. Here’s what he shared:<\/p>\n

\"DavidGanulin-wm\"<\/p>\n

I grew up in Oceanside, Long Island.<\/strong> I went to SUNY Oneonta and then the University of Rochester for grad school. After that I went to Japan for six years. I wanted to get the hell out of here! I always wanted to travel and knew that if it was going to happen, it was going to happen after grad school. I was teaching English as a second language at colleges and universities and doing martial arts\u2014all that kind of fun stuff.<\/p>\n

Traditional Japanese martial arts have something that look like kettlebells. They\u2019re nothing new. I started doing research into physical culture while I was [in Japan], like, what is this weird kettlebell thing? This was even before they existed more or less in America to any real degree.<\/p>\n

I came back in late 2000 and didn\u2019t want to teach anymore.<\/strong> I tried to get into publishing\u2014that didn\u2019t happen. [I] got a job at Woof.com and I was the fitness and wellness editor with them. That\u2019s where I came across kettlebells again. After we all got fired because the website went out of business…I was forced to go into personal training at the Sports Club-LA on the upper east side. I figured, okay, I\u2019m doing personal training, I\u2019m doing okay money-wise, but this kettlebell thing wouldn\u2019t leave me alone. It\u2019s legitimate; it\u2019s hundreds and hundreds years old. It\u2019s got a story. It\u2019s sexy. No one\u2019s ever seen \u2018em before. And if I can get the ladies who lunch with the nails, the hair and the make-up swinging around iron weights and like<\/i> it, maybe there is a business there. So that\u2019s kind of how I got started.<\/p>\n

What is this kettlebell? It\u2019s a gym in your hand.<\/strong> It burns a ton of calories. It\u2019s got an ancient history behind it; it\u2019s over 300 years old. The Russians used them and we use them now. It\u2019s aerobic and anaerobic, which means it works your muscular and heart system at the same time.<\/p>\n

I wouldn\u2019t qualify myself as a fitness professional anymore.<\/strong> I don\u2019t recognize myself as a trainer anymore, because I don\u2019t want to. I\u2019m more interested in marketing, business, scaling, and helping the people that work with KettleBell Concepts make more money and get more recognition, more clients. They\u2019re the rockstars. I haven\u2019t trained a client in a while. I train myself. I do it for me, now.<\/p>\n

We all have to work on ourselves.<\/strong> You have to move your body somehow, because there is a direct correlation between productivity, creativity\u2014all this great stuff that comes from the benefits of exercise.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve sacrificed a lot.<\/strong> There\u2019s been times when my bank account has been negative\u2014I think any entrepreneur can relate to that. Negative; there was no money. I\u2019ve had to borrow money from friends, I\u2019ve had to borrow money from my parents, I\u2019ve had to borrow money from angel investors. I haven\u2019t had money for big birthday presents [or] to travel. It\u2019s been an obscene amount of sacrifice. Sometimes it\u2019s like, I\u2019m done, I\u2019m packing it in. When is enough, enough? I was this close to closing the company in December, but I pushed really hard and called in every single favor. I pulled out all the stops.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve never wavered on the belief that this funky looking thing can literally change the face of fitness.<\/strong> It\u2019s not expensive, it\u2019s not glamorous. And what happened? The fitness industry moved into exactly where it is now. Things like CrossFit are more and more popular; people want to play more, they want to move more. They want to use the ropes and the kettlebells more.<\/p>\n
