We tapped some <a href=\"http:\/\/www.weworklabs.com\">WeWork Labs<\/a> members who\u2019ve either successfully raised money or have greatly improved their pitching skills since joining the program to find out exactly how they did it. They shared their best insights and information you can put to use today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"tailor-your-pitch-to-your-audience\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Tailor your pitch to your audience&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve noticed that pitches to VCs are usually different than pitches to angels. The main difference between pitching to VCs vs. angels is the exit strategy. I\u2019m one of those founders who wants to be ambitious and IPO\u2014and VCs like that. They invest with big visions in mind. Angels are okay with smaller exits. What\u2019s more appealing to them is being able to talk about how another company could acquire you. As a founder, you need to adjust to those conversations.\u201d <em>\u2014Helena Ronis, founder of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/voxsnap.com\/\"><em>VoxSnap<\/em><\/a><em> and a member at <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/400-concar-dr--sf-bay-area--CA\"><em>WeWork 400 Concar Dr<\/em><\/a><em>, San Mateo, California<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"show-investors-that-youre-willing-to-pivot\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Show investors that you\u2019re willing to pivot<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to have a really solid idea that you believe in, but you can\u2019t be unwilling to pivot in whatever direction you need to. I want to create the first digital space for couples and help people in relationships make better decisions faster. I have a current product that I think is great and I\u2019m about to test in beta\u2014but I would never follow it to the grave if it\u2019s not working. I\u2019ll find another way to solve the problem. Investors want to see that you\u2019re willing to do that.\u201d <br>\u2014<em>Jordan Scott, <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/the-startup-diaries-the-workweek-of-a-date-night-entrepreneur\"><em>founder and CEO<\/em><\/a><em> of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/idktonight.com\/\"><em>idk tonight<\/em><\/a><em> and a member at <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/175-varick-st--new-york-city--NY\"><em>WeWork 175 Varick St<\/em><\/a><em>, New York<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"show-your-deck-to-fresh-eyes\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Show your deck to fresh eyes&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s useful to get feedback from someone new. They can tell you which parts are clear and which are not immediately comprehensible. The opportunities I get to try my pitch on new people has been transformative. We started detecting very specific questions that people kept repeating and it helped us figure out what wasn\u2019t working. The pitch that we use now is completely different from where we started.\u201d \u2014<em>Juan Salas, CEO of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.celerative.com\/\"><em>Celerative<\/em><\/a><em> and a member at WeWork 400 Concar Dr<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"get-comfortable-with-feedback\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Get comfortable with feedback<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cYou have to be totally fine with getting feedback when you\u2019re practicing in front of people. There\u2019ll be great feedback and feedback that doesn\u2019t fit and you don\u2019t follow, but if you\u2019re siloed while you work on your pitch, the first time you learn about problems with your pitch will be when you\u2019re actually pitching. You want to start in an environment where you can safely get feedback and make adjustments from there.\u201d \u2014<em>Nick Lawson, CEO of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sqwadhq.com\/\"><em>Sqwad<\/em><\/a><em> and a member at <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/us-custom-house--portland--OR\"><em>WeWork US Custom House<\/em><\/a><em>, Portland, Oregon<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>WeWork offers companies of all sizes space solutions that help solve their biggest business challenges.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"be-straightforward-with-your-language\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Be straightforward with your language&nbsp;<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cA startup needs to be instantly graspable. If you find yourself pushing really hard, it\u2019s not a good start. Stop trying to use the language that you think would be interesting for investors. If you have something that\u2019s simple, don\u2019t try to make it sound complicated. It\u2019s awfully alienating to people when there are layers of jargon involved. Just say what it is or does in simple terms.\u201d <br>\u2014<em>Fiachra \u00d3 Comhra\u00ed, founder of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/renewaldiary.com\/\"><em>Renewal Diary<\/em><\/a><em> and a member at <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/charlemont-exchange--dublin\"><em>WeWork Charlemont Exchange<\/em><\/a><em>, Dublin, Ireland<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"prepare-for-the-tough-questions\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Prepare for the tough questions<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m a big fan of focusing on negative questions and preparing for questions that no one expects me to have an answer to. I recommend sitting down with one or two friends or partners who really understand your business model and finding three to 10 big pain points and writing down how you\u2019d answer questions about them. But they\u2019re people. They have emotions and thought processes, and the relationship isn\u2019t one-sided. You\u2019re not going to them asking for money\u2014they\u2019re getting something out of it, too. If they\u2019re considering you, it means they see something in you. That difference in mind-set is a good confidence booster.\u201d \u2014<em>Mike Moceri, CEO of <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/makeros.com\/\"><em>MakerOS<\/em><\/a><em> and a member at <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/205-hudson-st--new-york-city--NY\"><em>WeWork 205 Hudson St<\/em><\/a><em>, New York<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"make-sure-your-mission-is-genuine\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Make sure your mission is genuine<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe have a clear mission and everything stems from that. It\u2019s a genuine mission that tackles a major social problem. That makes it quite easy to create a story and communicate around that, and it makes the pitch very powerful. A lot of times, startups are trying to stitch in a social purpose to something that\u2019s not really very social. I think the strength of our conviction helps us communicate.
