And that balance will likely shift over time. The bottom line for everyone, however, is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/how-to-find-work-life-balance-in-a-high-pressure-job\">the demands of work<\/a> must not stand in the way of an employee having a satisfying life outside of the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"what-causes-work-life-imbalance\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>What causes work-life imbalance?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.workfront.com\/resources\/the-work-life-imbalance-report\">survey of American workers<\/a> found that these were the three most common reasons why employees felt they didn\u2019t have work-life balance:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Bad or overbearing bosses (60 percent)<\/li><li>Having to work outside of regular business hours (39 percent)<\/li><li>Lack of flexibility with work hours and time off (39 percent)<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>What do those three things have in common? A lack of control. When employees feel like they have little say in how they perform their jobs, they aren\u2019t happy. And they aren\u2019t healthy, either; employees who work longer hours have a higher risk of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelancet.com\/journals\/lancet\/article\/PIIS0140-6736(15)60295-1\/fulltext\">cardiovascular disease<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cambridge.org\/core\/journals\/psychological-medicine\/article\/long-working-hours-and-symptoms-of-anxiety-and-depression-a-5-year-follow-up-of-the-whitehall-ii-study\/B19F5D1AC436F10E5954C8ADBBE2AC57\"> depression, anxiety<\/a>, and higher levels of <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/3985027\/email-psychology-work-mood\/\">daily stress<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"impact-on-employees\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Impact on employees<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Work-life balance has a major impact on employees and can affect everything from workplace engagement to well-being. When employees aren\u2019t able to sign off, they have less time available for physical activities, healthy eating, and social interactions with friends and family. Over time, poor work-life balance can lead to burnout, anxiety, depression, loss of sleep, and other mental health challenges.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the other hand, a healthy work-life balance is one of the top qualities people look for in an employer, and word gets around. There\u2019s a huge upside to being known as a company where employees feel like they\u2019re thriving both at work and at home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"five-ways-to-promote-work-life-balance-at-your-company\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Five ways to promote work-life balance at your company<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees\u2014especially <a href=\"https:\/\/www2.deloitte.com\/content\/dam\/Deloitte\/global\/Documents\/About-Deloitte\/gx-millenial-survey-2016-exec-summary.pdf\">millennials<\/a>\u2014want balance between the office and home, and employers are starting to catch on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies that publicly advocate for solutions<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/creating-work-life-balance-millennial-employees\"> that promote better work-life balance are no longer an anomaly<\/a>, and this consideration is now essential for remaining competitive when acquiring and retaining talent. Any manager that\u2019s hoping to improve the status quo at their company can consider the following five tactics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Flexible work arrangements<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/work-life-balance-identify-priorities\">Giving employees the ability to set their own schedules<\/a> and work from home means that they can better align their professional and personal responsibilities. For example, if regular work hours are 9:00 to 5:00, but an employee has a 45-minute commute and has to get a child on the bus at 8:45, giving them the ability to work 9:30 to 5:30 instead allows that employee to better manage competing responsibilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Paid time off (PTO)<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditionally, employers have offered sick time, vacation time, and personal days, which doesn\u2019t always align with an employee\u2019s needs. More and more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/creating-work-life-balance-millennial-employees\">companies are shifting to a PTO approach<\/a>, in which an employee has a set number of days they can use as they see fit. With this approach, an employee who has the flu won\u2019t use all of their sick time for the year in one shot, and an employee who never gets sick can use that time for vacation or volunteer work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The ability to unplug<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most employees want to be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/achieving-work-life-integration\">enjoy time with family and friends<\/a> when they aren\u2019t in the office, which they can\u2019t do when their bosses are emailing them at all hours and expecting an immediate response. Allowing employees to ignore work communications outside of work hours without being penalized is essential for work-life balance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Nixing long hours<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Sometimes a project comes up that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/how-to-find-work-life-balance-in-a-high-pressure-job\">requires employees to spend more time at work<\/a>, and that\u2019s okay. What\u2019s not okay is the expectation that employees will work long hours all the time, especially for no additional pay. Giving employees the freedom to leave work when their scheduled day ends allows them to better plan for activities and responsibilities outside of the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Modeling work-life balance<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The best thing managers can do to help their employees better <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/creating-work-life-balance-millennial-employees\">achieve work-life balance<\/a> is model the behavior. Leave on time. Don\u2019t email outside of work hours. Don\u2019t make employees feel that there are unwritten rules about how dedicated they should be\u2014lay out your expectations and then follow them yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n<div
