When Shaniqua McClendon joined Crooked Media<\/a>\u2014the media company founded by Obama White House staffers Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor\u2014as political director, the 2018 midterm elections were about six months away. First, she launched Vote Save America<\/a>, a one-stop shop where users can register to vote, find their polling place, and more; then she helped raise $2.7 million for house candidates. \u201cThe quickest way to explain my job is that I am the person tasked with making sure our audience isn\u2019t just consuming our content, but also getting engaged in the issues we talk about,\u201d McClendon explains. In recent months, that has meant working with organizations like Swing Left<\/a> and Indivisible<\/a>\u2014\u201cgroups that are doing work that feeds into campaigns but are not exactly campaigns,\u201d she says\u2014to see how Crooked can help create calls to action. \u201cI\u2019ve been talking to them to see how can we be supportive?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The role is exactly what she was looking for when she graduated with a master\u2019s in public policy from Harvard last year. \u201cI wanted to work at a company that could leverage its name recognition to increase civic engagement,\u201d she says. \u201cRegardless of what the guys are saying on Pod Save America<\/em> [Crooked\u2019s flagship podcast]\u2014they have their opinions and that\u2019s why the show has been successful\u2014my job is to make sure that we are equipping people with the tools and knowledge to support the candidates that they feel passionate about, and to hold folks accountable once they get into office.\u201d Below is a snapshot of how McClendon spends her day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most mornings\u2026 <\/strong>I listen to a couple of daily news podcasts<\/a>. If I\u2019m up before 6 a.m., I\u2019ll catch the end of Morning Joe<\/em>. Then I\u2019m at the gym by 6:30 and at work between 9 and 9:30. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I check my email\u2026 <\/strong>as soon as I wake up. Not the best habit, but it helps me keep a mental note of anything I need to respond to once I\u2019m in the office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I travel to work\u2026 <\/strong>by foot. I\u2019m used to living in East Coast cities, so I walk to work and have no intention of ever getting a car. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I start the day by\u2026 <\/strong>drinking water. I try to make sure my cup is always full at the office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today I\u2019m working on\u2026 <\/strong>a presentation about how we define our political spirit. It\u2019s a rubric for how we make decisions around what we\u2019ll get engaged in, what we\u2019ll support, how we approach issues\u2014do <\/em>we approach issues? It\u2019s not super-formal, but it\u2019s about finding the balance between us as a media company and us as a political entity that can have an impact in the political space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The thing most likely to break my focus is\u2026 <\/strong>Slack, or Jon Lovett convening a focus group to test his jokes. He\u2019ll come out of his office and say, \u201cOK\u2026 this is what I\u2019m thinking.\u201d Then he\u2019ll tell us the joke to see if people laugh and go back to whatever he was doing. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I\u2019m feeling unmotivated\u2026<\/strong> I <\/strong>listen to any of Beyonc\u00e9\u2019s live albums. You can hear all the work that goes into them, and that reminds me that you have to get in the zone and really feel whatever it is you\u2019re working on and put energy into it. Because if you don\u2019t, you\u2019re not going to get an amazing product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last time I daydreamed in a meeting was\u2026 <\/strong>at a weekly Vote Save America meeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I\u2019m most likely to procrastinate by\u2026 <\/strong>looking at Twitter. It was<\/em> Instagram\u2014I would pick up my phone for [work] and find myself looking at Instagram instead\u2014so now I don\u2019t go on [the app] at the office. I made a rule for myself. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Speaking of Twitter\u2026 <\/strong>it\u2019s always open. I look at it a lot. It\u2019s sad. I look at Twitter more than I actually tweet. If someone looked at my Twitter they would think I\u2019m not on there, but I\u2019m always on there. I\u2019m a Twitter ghost, or a stalker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We have a Slack channel dedicated to\u2026 <\/strong>The Bachelor<\/em>, but I don\u2019t watch the show, so I don\u2019t really pay attention to it. But that is a very active channel. There is a Bachelor<\/em> bracket at Crooked, so it\u2019s pretty intense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I take phone calls in\u2026 <\/strong>a small meeting room affectionately known as the Therapy Office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

I eat meals at my desk\u2026 <\/strong>just about every day. Bad habit I picked up in D.C. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last toast we had at work was\u2026 <\/strong>for one of my coworkers who was leaving the company. She was the first person to ever leave Crooked, since we\u2019re not that old. There was a lovely cake. They did <\/em>spell her name wrong, but someone managed to fix it. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

My office wellness habit is\u2026 <\/strong>taking a walk. I do this pretty much every day with one of my coworkers, just to get away from my desk. It\u2019s created a bit of a spending habit at Starbucks, but it\u2019s so nice to get out.<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
