{"id":55363,"date":"2019-07-12T15:33:11","date_gmt":"2019-07-12T19:33:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/?p=55363"},"modified":"2020-09-03T05:53:00","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T09:53:00","slug":"working-away-from-home-but-bringing-your-home-to-work","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/employee-spotlight\/working-away-from-home-but-bringing-your-home-to-work","title":{"rendered":"Working away from home, but bringing your home to work"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>WeWork\u2019s community team members are the soul of the We community. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/tag\/heart-of-we\">Heart of We<\/a><\/strong> highlights how their hard work and passion improves the daily lives of WeWork members across the globe.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Eugene Clowney wants every WeWork member to feel as at home as possible. \u201cYou think about how much time people spend in the office\u2026 they\u2019re probably here more than they are with their families,\u201d he says. \u201cThis becomes their second home.\u201d The problem Clowney challenges himself to solve is, as he puts it: How do we create a vibe so there\u2019s never a headache within the space?&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The solution, it seems, is to bring the spirit of what he considers home into the office. Born and raised in West Harlem in New York City, Clowney\u2019s upbringing in the \u201curban city, the hood, whatever anyone wants to call it,\u201d informs everything he does. In 2017, Clowney began his WeWork career at Harlem&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/8-w-126th-st--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork 8 W 126th Street<\/a> as a community associate, where he supported black entrepreneurs and witnessed their success in the process. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTo be a part of something that can be a resource to people of color in that neighborhood\u2026 it was such a magical time,\u201d he says of his time there. \u201cBeing part of something that could be an incubator to all of the creativity in Harlem and being part of the team that helped bring creatives together was extremely special. I don\u2019t have words to explain how it feels to help push positivity and growth in a neighborhood that I\u2019ve seen change since the \u201990s and early 2000s,&#8221; Clowney says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Growing up in Harlem could be \u201creal bleak,\u201d according to Clowney. \u201cI never thought, coming from where I come from\u2026 you don\u2019t really know where you want to go, and the disadvantage is always there.\u201d Seeing firsthand how businesses can thrive within WeWorks spaces\u2014especially the one in Harlem\u2014has made Clowney want to make the WeWork platform accessible to everyone. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cBringing more people that look like me, who may have never seen this kind of space, who may have not understood or who may not have felt like they fit in\u201d is Clowney\u2019s motivation for getting up in the morning. \u201cEveryone should be a part of this,\u201d he says. \u201cNo matter what you look like, no matter what you represent. From being a person of color to representing the LGBTQ community, every person deserves to use this platform for their growth.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"700\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/KEP_7647-Edit-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55374\"\/><figcaption>Community lead Eugene Clowney in WeWork 33 Arch St in Boston. Photograph by Katelyn Perry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>A few years into his gig in New York, Clowney left to serve as a community lead at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/31-st-james-ave--boston--MA\">WeWork 31 St. James Ave<\/a> in Boston, bringing a piece of Harlem with him to the next chapter of his life in New England. Clowney knew he wanted to make Black History Month a full-blown celebration throughout the Boston buildings. \u201cBlack History Month is really huge where I come from\u2014we celebrate.\u201d In February 2019, Clowney and his team hosted more than 15 events throughout Boston\u2019s nine WeWork locations, including a vendor market that featured products from Boston\u2019s black-owned businesses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the robust calendar he created for Black History Month, Clowney produced the inaugural WeWork Basketball Tournament last November, which included 64 players from all nine of Boston\u2019s WeWork buildings\u2014and plenty of fans. The event raised money for Volo City Kids, a nonprofit that creates free youth sports programs. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI was a huge after-school sports kid and went to all the summer programs, so I understand how fortunate I was and how healthy those programs can be for the mental growth for young people,\u201d says Clowney. \u201cAnd, on the other end, [it was] creating an unmatched member experience by getting our massive companies out of their offices and out of our WeWork locations to another place where they can connect, socialize, network, have fun, and shoot hoops.\u201d Clowney is running Boston\u2019s second WeWork Basketball Tournament this month.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Through all his work in Boston&#8217;s WeWork community, Clowney has found a second home. But, he says, he&#8217;ll never forget where he came from. \u201cThat Harlem building is really part of my heart\u2014it\u2019s probably the first place I visit when I go back home [to New York],\u201d he says. \u201cThat building is where I come from.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Interested in joining the WeWork community?
