What does such an entrepreneur\u2019s weekly, daily, or even hourly routine look like when sometimes there aren\u2019t enough hours in a day? In the <\/em><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/tag\/startup-diaries\"><em>Startup Diaries<\/em><\/a><\/strong><em>, founders walk us through a week in their lives and show what it really takes to get a fledgling business off the ground.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a reason Bruce Mackintosh, founder of the subscription-based fitness app <a href=\"https:\/\/sswt.co\/wework\">SoSweat<\/a>, has the word \u201crelentless\u201d tattooed on his left arm. \u201cI always need more,\u201d he explains. \u201cIt\u2019s like, \u2018Great, I\u2019ve achieved this little thing\u2026 what\u2019s next?\u2019\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s the sort of trait that can motivate an entrepreneur and exhaust him. \u201cThis morning, for example, I was in a bad mood because I woke up and there was a three-star review in the App Store,\u201d he says. \u201cSo now I look at myself and go, \u2018Ugh, what have I done wrong?\u2019 In reality, that reviewer is probably just difficult to please.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mackintosh, who has a background in coding and app development and worked as a personal trainer in college, launched his business in February 2018 with a temporary team of four and help from a personal-trainer friend. But these days, or at least until his first round of funding comes through, he\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/6-reasons-these-startups-decided-to-stay-small-for-now\">one-man show<\/a>. \u201cWhenever there\u2019s something I don\u2019t know how to do,\u201d he says, \u201cI just knuckle down and figure it out.\u201d (See: relentless.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An unexpected break came in October 2018, when an Apple representative reached out about promoting SoSweat in the App Store.&nbsp;\u201cThey said were looking for some good products,\u201d&nbsp;Mackintosh remembers, and they recommended he make a few strategic improvements&nbsp;to the app before they featured it. Since then, he says, \u201cthey\u2019ve been mentoring SoSweat into a position where they\u2019re happy to constantly promote it.\u201d (The app was recently touted in a \u201cNo Gym Membership Required\u201d carousel alongside Nike, for example.)&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThat was a major turning point,\u201d says Mackintosh, a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wework.com\/labs\">WeWork Labs<\/a> member at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/8-devonshire-square--london?utm_campaign=1405715209&amp;utm_term=55079377133&amp;utm_content=282840547833&amp;utm_source=ads-google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMI7rDXop2Z4wIVx42zCh2Sww3rEAAYASAAEgIG0_D_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\">WeWork 8 Devonshire Square<\/a> in London. \u201cWe had an external source saying the app is aesthetically acceptable, it doesn\u2019t crash, and it\u2019s not fraudulent to the users. There was credibility bestowed by that accolade.\u201d There was also a bump in subscribers: The app, which has 50,000 users, has seen consistent month-over-month growth ever since.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mackintosh, who\u2019s developing a top-secret feature for the app and finalizing his pitch deck, shares a diary of a recent workweek.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"800\" height=\"533\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/07\/BruceMackintosh_body2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-54210\"\/><figcaption>SoSweat was recently listed among the best apps for gym-less fitness alongside industry leaders like Nike.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Monday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6:30 a.m.<\/strong> Wake up. I don\u2019t use an alarm. I\u2019d much rather get the rest I need; that way I\u2019m able to perform better during the day. If I get to work a half-hour later, what difference does it make?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7 a.m.<\/strong> Check email. I get a daily update on various KPIs, which is actually a nice way to remember I\u2019m on track. It\u2019s a little jolt of \u201cLet\u2019s go!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7:15 a.m.<\/strong> Gym. Today I do<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/BzFUgoflCFm\/\"> 175 burpees<\/a> as part of my \u201c365 burpee challenge,\u201d which is to do as many burpees per day as there have been days in the year. (On January 1 you do one, on January 2 you do two, etc.) I was looking to do something outside of work that was specific and focused, but not necessarily going to take away from the business or drain me mentally.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8:30 a.m<\/strong>. Breakfast (scrambled eggs and bacon on a bagel).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9 a.m.<\/strong> Commute to work on my<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mi.com\/global\/mi-electric-scooter-pro\/\"> Xiaomi scooter<\/a>. It\u2019s such a fun way to travel\u2014it makes me feel like a child.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10 a.m.<\/strong> Update social media and plow through admin tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11 a.m.<\/strong> Monday standup at WeWork Labs. My big challenge for the week is finalizing my pitch deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11:30 a.m.<\/strong> Fix product bugs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>12:30 p.m.<\/strong> Work on new product feature. I don\u2019t want to give too much information, but I\u2019m focused on addressing motivation, which is my users\u2019 biggest problem, and accountability is my main driver at the moment. The problem with a mobile product is that accountability is kind of disconnected. If I don\u2019t feel like getting off the couch at 5 o\u2019clock, I can just stay on the couch. So I need to externalize the accountability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1:30 p.m<\/strong>. Lunch with the founder of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikenav.app\/\"> BikeNav<\/a> (a motorbike-navigation app), also a Labs member. Both of our products use a subscription model, so we spend time strategizing around how to bring in more subscribers and ensure that existing users continue to renew.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2 p.m.<\/strong> Work on pitch deck. I\u2019m going for quite a big raise\u2014\u00a31.2 million. I want to build technical offerings as well as a team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3:30 p.m.<\/strong> Pitch-deck roasting at WeWork Labs. Everybody presents their pitch deck, and members offer feedback: \u201cYour font is wrong,\u201d \u201cThat doesn\u2019t make sense,\u201d things like that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6 p.m.<\/strong> Meet with a potential adviser. I\u2019m looking to appoint someone who can challenge me, like, \u201cNo, Bruce, that\u2019s bullsh*t, stop doing that.\u201d Someone I can bounce ideas off, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8:15 p.m.<\/strong> Return to the office and catch up on email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9 p.m<\/strong>. Scoot home and eat dinner. FaceTime with my wife, who\u2019s out of town this week. She\u2019s always incredibly supportive.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11 p.m.<\/strong> Listen to my<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Bad-Blood-Secrets-Silicon-Startup-ebook\/dp\/B078VW3VM7\/ref=sr_1_3?keywords=bad+blood&amp;qid=1562078918&amp;s=gateway&amp;sr=8-3\"> <em>Bad Blood<\/em><\/a><em> <\/em>audiobook. If I can learn something from the story, it\u2019s that I do need to be a little bit more visionary, say to investors, \u201cThis is where the business is going to be\u2014you\u2019d better get on.\u201d Again, without lying or deceiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11:15 p.m.<\/strong> Shower and go to bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tuesday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8:10 a.m.<\/strong> Wake up and check email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8:40 a.m.<\/strong> Head to the gym for today\u2019s burpee challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9:30 a.m.<\/strong> Breakfast smoothie with mango. I recently bought a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nutriliving.com\/shop\/blenders?gclid=EAIaIQobChMItsDthqeV4wIVaP_jBx1zWQKHEAAYASAAEgIvffD_BwE\"> NutriBullet<\/a>, and I\u2019m like, &#8220;Where was this my whole life?&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9:50 a.m.<\/strong> Scoot to the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10:45 a.m.<\/strong> Check off admin tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11:30 a.m.<\/strong> Work on pitch video ideas. Just the word<em> <\/em>\u201cfitness\u201d makes VCs glaze over. So I\u2019m thinking of shooting something that gives an understanding of the product and the core new features that are coming along. Hopefully a video can also show some of my quirks. I don\u2019t come across as the stereotypical personal trainer that\u2019s big and brawny, and that can actually play to my strengths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>12:30 p.m.<\/strong> Back to the pitch deck. I\u2019ve gotten a lot of feedback from entrepreneurs and VCs who say, \u201cYou need to shout a little more.\u201d For example, I have an MBA\u2014I didn\u2019t have that in the pitch.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2:30 p.m.<\/strong> Lunch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4:15 p.m.<\/strong> Back to the pitch deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6:30 p.m.<\/strong> Stop home, then scoot to gymnastics. When I was younger, I couldn\u2019t do a flip into a pool or on a trampoline. One day I thought, let me go try. And it\u2019s been great.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8:45\u201310:30 p.m.<\/strong> Shower, dinner, bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wednesday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7:15 a.m.<\/strong> Wake up and check email.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7:45 a.m.<\/strong> Burpee challenge.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8:45 a.m.<\/strong> Get ready for the day and scoot to the office while finishing up <em>Bad Blood<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9:30 a.m.<\/strong> Catch up with other entrepreneurs at WeWork Labs. Working on your own can be very difficult. In traditional jobs, you have a set of tasks and responsibilities, and at the end of the year, you get reviewed. Have you done well? Entrepreneurs don\u2019t have that, especially when they\u2019re starting out. I find it incredibly hard to keep going in the face of no approval or positive feedback. You can\u2019t exactly be a fitness-brand founder and not be fit yourself. Thankfully, I love working out.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8:30 p.m.<\/strong> Burritos for dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10:30 p.m.<\/strong> Watch TV. I don\u2019t watch programs during the week; I go to YouTube on my Apple TV. It\u2019s mindless\u2014a way to decompress and slow down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11 p.m.<\/strong> Bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thursday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6:15 a.m.<\/strong> Wake up, check KPIs, and make a smoothie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8 a.m.<\/strong> Scoot to the office while listening to a new audiobook, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Start-Why-Leaders-Inspire-Everyone-ebook\/dp\/B002Q6XUE4\/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=Start+With+Why%2C+by+Simon+Sinek.&amp;qid=1562081668&amp;s=gateway&amp;sr=8-5\">Start With Why<\/a><\/em>, by Simon Sinek. The takeaway so far: Don\u2019t start with <em>what<\/em> you do, as in &#8220;I have a fitness product,&#8221; but start with <em>why <\/em>you do it, as in, &#8220;I\u2019m solving the fitness-motivation problem.&#8221;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9:30 a.m.<\/strong> Pitch deck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11 a.m.<\/strong> Call with potential adviser. Haven\u2019t found the right person yet, but I\u2019m getting there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>12:30 p.m.<\/strong> Group lunch hosted by WeWork.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2:40 p.m.<\/strong> Another pitch-deck roasting, this time with a VC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4 p.m.<\/strong> Tinker with the pitch deck some more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>6:30 p.m.<\/strong> WeWork\u2019s Pride-themed quiz night hosted by a drag queen. So much fun!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9:15 p.m.<\/strong> Scoot home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9:45 p.m.<\/strong> Go to the gym for sit-ups and burpees. It\u2019s been interesting to see the parallels between how friends and family have reacted to the Burpee Challenge and how they\u2019ve reacted to my business. In the beginning, for both, everybody was like, \u201cYou\u2019re crazy,\u201d and telling me why it can\u2019t be done. But as I\u2019ve progressed, those naysayers have started turning positive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10:30 p.m.<\/strong> Snacks and TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>11:30 p.m.<\/strong> Shower and bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Friday<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7:30 a.m.<\/strong> Wake up and have tea in bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>8:40 a.m.<\/strong> Scoot to the office while listening to <em>Start With Why<\/em>. I like that Sinek uses real-world examples. For instance, Steve Jobs didn\u2019t tell his audience about how the iPod is a 32G hard drive with an LCD screen. He told them that it\u2019s 1,000 songs in their pocket.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9:30 a.m.<\/strong> Social media and admin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10 a.m.\u20136 p.m.<\/strong> Work on new product feature for the rest of the day, breaking only for lunch and coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>7 p.m.<\/strong> Go to the gym for a workout (and burpees, of course).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>9:30 p.m.<\/strong> Dinner and TV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>10:45 p.m.<\/strong> Shower and in bed before 11 on a Friday. I\u2019ll happily go out, but it tends not to be my choice. It\u2019s not my thing\u2014I don\u2019t drink, I don\u2019t smoke. I think about how easy it is for people to go out every Friday night and have drinks, because it\u2019s something that they enjoy, and I wonder: How can I bring that urgency to my product? Because I don\u2019t necessarily do the biggest workout every single day, but I definitely do it, and I <em>always <\/em>feel good afterwards. How can I make everybody feel that?
