{"id":5416,"date":"2019-06-06T11:00:00","date_gmt":"2019-06-06T15:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/?p=5416"},"modified":"2020-09-03T05:52:53","modified_gmt":"2020-09-03T09:52:53","slug":"five-ways-to-maintain-productivity-through-the-3-pm-slump","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/professional-development\/creativity-culture\/five-ways-to-maintain-productivity-through-the-3-pm-slump","title":{"rendered":"Five ways to maintain productivity through the 3 p.m. slump"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>You can blame a lot of things for your midafternoon slump: not enough caffeine at breakfast, an endless list of to-do\u2019s, your late-night <em>Friends<\/em> binge\u2026 The causes are many, but the symptoms are specific\u2014that unpleasant sensation of grogginess, mild headache, and nausea that usually hits around 3 p.m., tanking your productivity for the rest of the day. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you can overcome it (even without a double espresso), says health coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jessicacordingnutrition.com\/\">Jessica Cording<\/a>, RD. \u201cOne of the major contributors to that slump is low blood sugar, which tends to make us hungry, fatigued, shaky, and cranky,\u201d she says. \u201cWhat we eat earlier in the day has a lot to do with it.\u201d (Quick nutrition refresher here: Simple carbohydrates like white-flour foods, as well as fruits and starchy vegetables that break down into starch in the digestive process, raise our blood sugar\u2014but our bodies burn through them fast, leading to a crash.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s not just what you eat; it\u2019s also when you eat, says Cording. If you ate lunch around noon, for example, it\u2019s been about three hours since your last meal, and, depending on what you had, your body has likely metabolized everything you ate. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We asked Cording and WeWork members for their best beat-the-slump tips\u2014to practice ahead of time as well as in the moment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"play-up-the-protein\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Play up the protein <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For a snack that \u201cactually keeps you full for a while,\u201d Cording recommends a protein-fiber combo (at least five grams of protein and three grams of fiber). The fiber slows digestion, while the protein satiates. DIY combos include an apple and peanut butter or hummus and whole wheat pita. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Too busy to be slicing and scooping? Try a protein bar\u2014but check the label for added sugar. Not all protein bars are created equal, cautions Cording. \u201cFive grams or less of added sugar is ideal,\u201d she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/aloha.com\/collections\/protein-bars\">Aloha<\/a> bars (which pass the added-sugar test) cater to the health-conscious consumer who is mindful of their nutrients but is not necessarily performance-focused (at least not at 3:30 on a Tuesday). Alexandra Stankiewicz, head of sales for the brand and a member at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/154-w-14th-st--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork 154 W 14th St<\/a> in New York, usually reaches for a protein-rich bar (made with tapioca fiber and plant-based proteins) on weekday afternoons. \u201cMidafternoon grogginess happens to the best of us,\u201d says Stankiewicz. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"feed-your-brain-and-your-gut\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Feed your brain and your gut<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Stable blood-sugar levels are not the only thing that helps us stay clearheaded, says Cording. Probiotics can help too. \u201cOne of my favorite snacks I recommend to clients is plain Greek yogurt,\u201d she says. \u201cYour gut and brain talk to each other, and supporting gut health supports <a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mind-and-mood\/probiotics-may-help-boost-mood-and-cognitive-function\">brain health and cognitive function<\/a>.\u201d Translation: The creamy, high-protein stuff may lead to sharper thinking during the p.m. slump.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"maintain-your-electrolytes\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Maintain your electrolytes<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>This is not a PSA for heavy drinkers nor an endorsement for picklebacks. When <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curehydration.com\/\">Lauren Picasso<\/a>, who works at New York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/79-madison-ave--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork 79 Madison Ave<\/a>, was training for a triathlon, she realized that the children\u2019s electrolyte solution Pedialyte worked better than plain water at beating that feeling of depletion after training sessions. Rather than keep raiding the kids\u2019 aisle, she decided to create <a href=\"https:\/\/www.curehydration.com\/\">Cure<\/a>, an electrolyte drink that gets its 250 mg of sodium (11 percent of the recommended daily value) and 450 mg of potassium (9 percent of the recommended daily value) from coconut water, pink Himalayan salt, and lemon juice. The salt helps balance the body\u2019s electrolytes (sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, bicarbonate, phosphate, and sulfate), and the citrus has flavonoids that are linked to improvements in cognitive functions, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5009163\/\"><em>European Journal of Nutrition<\/em><\/a> reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Picasso swears by it for her own midday office slumps. \u201cSometimes I\u2019m not as groggy as I think I am, sometimes I am just dehydrated,\u201d she explains. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"a-home-prepped-lunch-could-make-the-difference\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>A home-prepped lunch could make the difference <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>No health-focused or fast-casual restaurant knows what your body needs better than you do, so preparing your own lunch is a smart strategy\u2014plus, it saves you a considerable amount of money. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Food publicist Elizabeth Lehmann of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rachelvandolsen.com\/\">RVD Communications<\/a>, based at Brooklyn\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/134-n-4th-st--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork 134 N 4th St<\/a>, has developed a lunchtime craving for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bonappetit.com\/recipe\/chicken-rice-soup\">thick chicken soup<\/a> she makes from a <em>Bon Appetit<\/em> recipe. \u201cIt\u2019s warm and not too heavy,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd if it\u2019s something I\u2019m looking forward to, I usually eat much healthier, and it fuels me for the rest of my day.\u201d &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Aim for a balanced meal of half vegetables, one-quarter protein, and one-quarter complex carbohydrates. Tired of fiber-rich go-to\u2019s like bulgur and quinoa? Matt Aita, the executive chef of health-focused restaurant <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thelittlebeettable.com\/\">The Little Beet Table<\/a> in New York and Chicago, suggests sweet potatoes for a flavorful alternative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"walk-it-out\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Walk it out<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>There are times when your diet isn\u2019t to blame for your crash: Working under artificial lights and sitting for too long at a time can impact your energy. Get oxygen flowing to spur your metabolism, mood, and focus. \u201cWhen we\u2019re not moving around, that impacts the rate through which oxygen is carried throughout our body, so we may not feel as alert,\u201d Cording says. Take a walk around the block, escape to the nearest park, or just take the stairs a few flights to your next meeting.
