The&nbsp;<\/em><a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/tag\/the-heart-of-we\" target=\"_blank\"><em><strong>Heart of We<\/strong><\/em><\/a><em>&nbsp;highlights how their hard work and passion improves the daily lives of WeWork members across the globe.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Haruka Shibata was working at Softbank, a large Japanese conglomerate, when she read an article announcing the company\u2019s investment in a new kind of workplace called WeWork. \u201cWhen I read it,\u201d says Shibata, \u201cI thought: This is everything we need in Japan right now.\u201d&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shibata, 31, says she was drawn to WeWork\u2019s philosophy to \u201cdo what you love\u201d; worklife in Japan, she explains, is often missing the social element WeWork promoted. She applied, and in January 2018 was hired as part of the human-resources team at the first WeWork building in Japan, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/ark-hills-south--tokyo\">WeWork Ark Hills South<\/a>, in Tokyo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coincidentally, around the same time Shibata joined WeWork in pursuit of a more positive work environment, the Japanese government\u2019s initiative to reform the country\u2019s work culture, called Work Style Reform, was garnering attention. With high suicide rates and Japan\u2019s rigorous work culture taking a toll on health and family life, the country was ready for a change.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cJapan is trying to shift the culture,\u201d says Shibata, explaining that traditionally, working longer hours was what made you a valued employee in Japan. Even with governmental support, however, companies don\u2019t know what to do to change things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After two weeks at WeWork, Shibata joined the community team. \u201cWorking on community [puts me] at the hub of making the culture, of crafting the messages and missions and policies and putting them into effect in the work lives of the people in my building,\u201d says Shibata, who is now a community lead at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/midosuji-frontier--osaka\">WeWork Midosuji Frontier<\/a> in Osaka, and also helped launch a number of WeWork locations in Tokyo and Fukuoka. \u201cIt was my dream.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/japan-body--800x548.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-53261\"\/><figcaption>Shibata (far right) plans successful events to help WeWork members get to know each other and build relationships. <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In one of her first steps toward making the workplace more joyful, Shibata employed a reliable method of bringing people together: an after-work happy hour. No one showed up. \u201cIn Japan, happy hour is common, but never at work,\u201d Shibata explains.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For the next event, she set up the drinks area so that it looked photogenic, hoping that would lure attendees. A handful of people came out, took a picture\u2014then immediately went back to their offices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Still, Shibata persevered, slowly learning how to leverage the community. \u201cThese members joined WeWork because they were looking for something,\u201d she remembers telling herself. \u201cI would just have to be more creative in finding ways to help people open up.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shibata changed tack, creating an event called, simply: \u201cExchange Business Cards.\u201d Laughing, she acknowledges this straightforward event would never work in Western culture. However, it was a huge success among the Japanese. \u201cAbout 50 members came down from their offices, just to exchange business cards!\u201d she says. \u201cAll I did was put out orange juice, tea, and a microphone, then said \u20183, 2, 1\u2026 go!\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Little by little, the members in her building started to get to know each other and understand that WeWork is a family of sorts. \u201cThey just needed a little help to see that they can build relationships here,\u201d she says. \u201cThat work can have a more casual, social side.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Shibata is euphoric that she was able to contribute to even this small shift in work culture. \u201cWe taught our members to enjoy their work life, and it feels amazing!\u201d For as much as she feels she has given to the community, she\u2019s gotten so much back, too. \u201cThough I am trying to make the members happy, it is they who are making me smile,\u201d she says. \u201cI receive a lot of love.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We spoke to Haruka about her future plans, what she likes about WeWork, and the places and things she loves:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Where she sees herself in five years: \u201c<\/strong>I want to be a female leader,\u201d says Shibata, \u201ca person who can impact people.\u201d She says that a lot of women in Japan haven\u2019t been able to move up because working extra hours has been the key to mobility, and when women have children, that\u2019s a lot harder to do. But things are changing. \u201cI want to create my own team, building, world, culture\u2014a special happy environment,\u201d says Shibata.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Her favorite thing about WeWork:<\/strong> Shibata loves learning new things, and says that she has expanded her knowledge in many areas because of her members. One way she does this is to set up one-on-one sessions to learn more about her members\u2019 businesses. She says a perfect example is the font design company <a href=\"https:\/\/en.morisawa.co.jp\/\">Morisawa<\/a>. \u201cI was surprised to discover that there is a psychological underpinning to letter design,\u201d she says. \u201cI would never have learned that if I wasn\u2019t at WeWork.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Favorite pastimes:<\/strong> Shibata finds that hot yoga balances her life. \u201cAt WeWork I\u2019m meeting people all day long,\u201d she says. Therefore, on the weekend, she says she most enjoys spending time by herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Favorite place in world:<\/strong> Laguna Beach in Southern California. \u201cWhen I went to college in California, I surfed every morning,\u201d says Shibata, noting she had to give the hobby up when she moved back to Japan because the winters are too cold and in summer the beaches are too crowded. \u201cI miss the chill beach,\u201d she adds.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>What she misses about the U.S.:<\/strong> Shibuta says she loved going to American grocery stores like Whole Foods. \u201cThere are so many kinds of vegetables and fruits,\u201d says Shibuta, adding that fruit in Japan is very expensive. \u201cFor me, Trader Joe\u2019s is heaven. You can find healthy or unhealthy, you have it all.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Interested in joining the WeWork community?
