Startup founders have infamously unpredictable daily schedules as they work to establish and grow their businesses. What does such an entrepreneur\u2019s weekly, daily, or even hourly routine look like when sometimes there aren\u2019t enough hours in a day? In the <\/em>Startup Diaries<\/em><\/a><\/strong>, founders walk us through a week in their lives and show what it really takes to get a fledgling business off the ground.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you were to ask Aparna Srinivasan about her role as CEO of SpotOn<\/a>, her pet-friendly rideshare app, she might refer you to her 13-year-old Lab Pei, Krishna. \u201cI\u2019m doing SpotOn for him, so he\u2019s taken the title [of CEO],\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019m just the mouthpiece.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

She came up with the business idea in 2016, while living in Los Angeles with her two dogs, Krishna\u2014who weighs 50 pounds\u2014and Raja (who has since passed). \u201cI had cars,\u201d she says. \u201cBut there were times that I didn\u2019t want to drive or needed to go to the airport [with one or both dogs], and it just got to be a hassle.\u201d (Uber and Lyft drivers allow pets only at their discretion.) So Srinivasan started feeling out other pet owners to see if they shared her struggle. \u201cThey said the same thing,\u201d she remembers. \u201cIt\u2019s stressful.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their consensus was proof that she was on to something. Over the next year, she kept her day job\u2014running a marketing company\u2014while launching her new business. She built a website with her eventual cofounder and CTO, John Bentley II, and started handing out flyers at dog parks. \u201cMy friends and I took over 500 rides in two months,\u201d she says. The trips were free (SpotOn wasn\u2019t licensed so Srinivasan couldn\u2019t charge), but the intel was priceless. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

By mid-2017, armed with consistent feedback that New York was a more obvious fit for the service, Srinivasan started considering a move to the East Coast; she did her own research, and by the end of that year she was a resident of New Jersey. \u201cI\u2019ll still be walking along the Hudson River and I\u2019m like, Holy crap. I have a rideshare company across the river<\/em>,\u201d she says. \u201cIt makes me cry. Like, What am I doing?<\/em> It\u2019s insane!\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although the app, which officially launched in September 2018, doesn\u2019t offer on-demand service yet (you need to book a driver about two hours in advance), Srinivasan, a member of WeWork Labs<\/a> at WeWork 81 Prospect St<\/a> in Brooklyn, expects to accommodate users accordingly by the end of the year, while simultaneously growing her business partnerships. Below, she recaps a recent workweek. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monday<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

6 a.m<\/strong>. Wake up after getting to bed at 2 a.m. (I was up late prepping for a big investor meeting on Wednesday.) In general, I don\u2019t sleep much. There\u2019s just not enough time during the workday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6:10 a.m.<\/strong> Shower and pray. Eat breakfast while answering emails, and make eggs for Krishna, my CEO. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 a.m.<\/strong> CEO finally wakes up. Time for his walk along the Hudson River. (We live in Jersey City.) This is my chance to clear my head. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

8:30 a.m. <\/strong>CEO eats breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 a.m.<\/strong> Off to our office in Dumbo. I listen to music on my commute. I was a deejay in college, and music has always been an integral part of my life. I\u2019ll listen to country, rap, traditional Indian music, classical\u2014but my favorite is house music. It\u2019s a de-stressor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9:40 a.m.<\/strong> Walk from the subway to the office. CEO pees on a tree.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10:15 a.m.<\/strong> WeWork Labs weekly standup. Members gather to share business updates and present an \u201cask.\u201d Our ask: Tell your friends about SpotOn, and if you know any investors, send them our way. We\u2019re in our first official fundraising round. It\u2019s so hard! It\u2019s one of the most difficult and time-consuming things a founder will ever do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10:45 a.m.<\/strong> Send updates to investors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2:20 p.m.<\/strong> CEO takes a pee break. I grab a taco to go.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3 p.m.<\/strong> Call with advisor regarding a meeting with investors. The be-all of fundraising is persistence\u2026 but you need to be persistent without being a pest. As a founder, you\u2019re like, \u201cI need the money. I need it now. Let\u2019s do it.\u201d But that can really drive off investors if you\u2019re looking needy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 p.m.<\/strong> Call with my cofounder, John, who built the app. He\u2019s based in Cincinnati, and I would say he\u2019s my first investor. He didn\u2019t put any money into the business, but his sweat, blood, and tears\u2014that\u2019s the investment that\u2019s gotten us this far.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 p.m.<\/strong> Commute home. Music, music, music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8:45 p.m<\/strong>. Dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9:15 p.m. <\/strong>Take a break and catch up on Netflix. (Currently watching Arrow<\/em>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10:45 p.m.<\/strong> Take CEO out for a pee, then he\u2019s off to bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 p.m.<\/strong> Answer emails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1:30 a.m.<\/strong> Sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

5:45 a.m.<\/strong> Wake up, shower, and pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6:15 a.m.<\/strong> Get on my Rock Solid<\/a> for 10 minutes. This is a total-body workout. We shall see\u2014I just got it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9:15 a.m.<\/strong> CEO gets up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9:30 a.m.<\/strong> Morning walk followed by breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10:15 a.m.<\/strong> Drive to my second office space in Newark. There\u2019s a ton of traffic so I\u2019m running late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11:45 a.m.<\/strong> Meeting with a VC. Give them a SpotOn progress update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 p.m<\/strong>. CEO pee break.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3:30 p.m<\/strong>. Meeting with a friend and mentor, Tom Wisniewski. He gave me the push to focus on business partnerships. So, for example, we have a partnership with Passport Unlimited. They handle employee perks for about 700 companies, including Google, Apple, and Microsoft\u2014and employees based in New York get a SpotOn discount code. Eventually, we want to get companies to make SpotOn rides a benefit, like a free lunch, rather than a perk. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4:15 p.m.<\/strong> Drive home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 p.m. <\/strong>Dinner. Totally checking out of work ahead of tomorrow\u2019s big meeting. I\u2019m going to pitch the investors in a SpotOn with Krishna. At first, I hadn\u2019t been taking him to any of our pitches, but then I had a pitch competition at Voyager HQ<\/a> and I decided to bring him, and the pitch went so well. After that, I scheduled my first SpotOn ride with investors, and by the end they were taking selfies with Krishna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 p.m.<\/strong> Goodnight!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wednesday<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

4:30 a.m.<\/strong> Big day today. Shower and pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5:20 a.m.<\/strong> Rock Solid time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 a.m.<\/strong> Eat breakfast, then wake up and feed CEO. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

8:15 a.m.<\/strong> Morning walk through the nearby marsh. We do some bird watching.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 a.m<\/strong>. Commute to Dumbo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9:50 a.m.<\/strong> Get to office and catch up with a fellow Labs member who has an investor lead for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10:45 a.m.<\/strong> Get my makeup done for today\u2019s photo shoot. (For this diary!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12 p.m.<\/strong> Walk over to Brooklyn Bridge Park for the shoot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1:30 p.m.<\/strong> Photo shoot done. CEO was amazing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2:45 p.m.<\/strong> Big investor meeting in a SpotOn. I want them to see the bigger picture\u2014that we\u2019re not just a rideshare, but a bridge to getting your dog to all these different, interactive offerings. I frame it as \u201cexperience N.Y.C. through the eyes of a dog.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3:20 p.m.<\/strong> First stop is Dogville, a pop-up where dogs can enjoy various activities. Krishna talks to the CEO of Dogville\u2014they have their own little meeting, smelling the butts. Very important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3:45 p.m<\/strong>. Group gets back into a SpotOn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4:10 p.m.<\/strong> Stop at Hotel 50 Bowery<\/a>, a pet-friendly boutique hotel with a rooftop bar. These are the kinds of things that people will do with their animals, given the opportunity. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5:45 p.m<\/strong>. Part ways. Honestly, we\u2019re too early for these investors, but they\u2019re going to help us with potential strategic partners.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 p.m.<\/strong> Meet with The Fourth Floor<\/a>, the women-centric networking organization I recently cofounded, at the office. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

10 p.m.<\/strong> Back home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11:45 p.m.<\/strong> Prep for tomorrow\u2019s meetings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1:40 a.m.<\/strong> Sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Thursday<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

7 a.m.<\/strong> Late wake-up, but needed the rest. Shower, pray, and eat breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 a.m.<\/strong> Take CEO for a walk along the water.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10:15 a.m.<\/strong> Commute to Dumbo. Music, music, music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 p.m.<\/strong> Call with major pet brand about our upcoming pilot. Pet retailers are starting to take a more service-oriented approach, incorporating more events, training, daycare, and boarding into their existing retail facilities. We\u2019re going to be the transportation arm: You book your training appointment online, and you have an option to request a SpotOn ride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 p.m.<\/strong> Call with another investor. Close to a close! Hopefully<\/em>. One thing about fundraising is, people can say, \u201cI want in.\u201d You get a number from them, you send them all the paperwork. But until that money is in the bank, it\u2019s not closed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 p.m.<\/strong> Feed the CEO a hot dog\u2014I didn\u2019t prepare to be at the office this late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 p.m.<\/strong> Meet friends for a late dinner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11:30 p.m.<\/strong> Commute home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12:55 a.m. <\/strong>Night-night.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday                      <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

6 a.m.<\/strong> Wake up, shower, and pray.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7:20 a.m.<\/strong> Rock Solid. Eat and prep CEO\u2019s breakfast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9:30 a.m.<\/strong> CEO wakes up and eats, and we head to Newark office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 p.m.<\/strong> Check out of work. I\u2019m meeting at my sister\u2019s house to get ready for a family wedding this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The truth is, I will work this weekend\u2014I work at least a little bit every weekend. I\u2019m very driven, and I think most founders are, because if you\u2019re not driven you\u2019re not going to be able to succeed. But, lately, I\u2019m making sure that I do take a break from work. My hand will still be on my phone. But I don\u2019t necessarily have to be in front of my computer developing the company. If you\u2019re always focused on this one thing, you won\u2019t have a sound mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
