 WeWork\u2019s community team members are the soul of the We community. The <\/em>Heart of We<\/strong><\/em><\/a> highlights how their hard work and passion improves the daily lives of WeWork members across the globe.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The first few months Isabel Harvey worked at WeWork, she came to know the members in her building so well, it became a problem: Everyone had such an interesting story, it was hard to keep their stories to herself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019d have chats with members and it was great,\u201d says Harvey, 27, a community associate at WeWork Place Ville Marie<\/a> in Montreal. One member was an app developer who wanted to incorporate artwork into his app, and another had created a virtual drawing platform\u2014talking to each of them, she realized they might be a perfect match. \u201cBut all this information was just in my head,\u201d she says. Harvey realized that the more people in the building knew about one another, the more opportunities there would be for cross-pollination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harvey had long been a fan of the online photojournalistic series \u201cHumans of New York<\/a>,\u201d and found the stories of her members to be as rich and varied as those New Yorkers she read about. She wanted to create something equivalent for the amazing humans she met in her building\u2014and that\u2019s how \u201cHumans of WeWork\u201d was born.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once a week, Harvey sits down with a member and has a conversation with them. \u201cMy aim is to get back to the basics of what WeWork is\u2014a place to help members build their businesses and find connection,\u201d she says.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In her quest to capture what is unique about each member, Harvey asks a lot of questions. \u201cI ask the subject to tell me about their company, what inspires them, whether they were alone when they started,\u201d she says. The first few stories got quite personal, she says; people talked about what life was like before they started their companies, and how their lives had changed since their successes and failures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Harvey wanted to create something equivalent for the amazing humans she met in her building\u2014and that\u2019s how \u201cHumans of WeWork\u201d was born.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

After the interview, Harvey makes a poster with a member\u2019s portrait and their story, and hangs it on a formerly empty wall. She also posts an article about the person on WeWork\u2019s member app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She has noticed that when people see the posters on the wall, they stop to look at them, taking a moment to find out what the members around them are all about. \u201cEven when members come from different industries, a lot of the challenges they\u2019ve faced are the same,\u201d Harvey says. This project has taught her that \u201cknowing what others around you have faced is part of what makes the \u2018Humans\u2019 project so empowering.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For now, the project is small in scale, but one day she wants to have an entire \u201cmember wall\u201d filled with her posters. She\u2019s also shared her template with other buildings and has received a lot of positive feedback.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIdeally I\u2019d love this to extend globally one day,\u201d says Harvey. \u201cMembers love being highlighted\u2014it makes them feel like a part of the best resource that WeWork has: its humans!\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We spoke to Harvey about what makes her a unique human of WeWork, the WeWork member who makes her day, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Most distinctive quality:<\/strong> Harvey lived in many different countries growing up, due to her father\u2019s work in the oil industry. \u201cI\u2019ve traveled so much, my ability to adapt to people from different cultures is what distinguishes me,\u201d says Harvey, who has lived in Guadeloupe, Haiti, Dominican Republic, Ivory Coast, Nigeria, San Francisco, Switzerland, and the UAE. The place she most loved to call home: \u201cWest Africa, Ivory Coast. It is such a beautiful country, both the people and the scenery.\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Member who\u2019s had the most impact: <\/strong>Sonia Martinez, of Sonia La Ronde Photography<\/a>. Harvey met Martinez when she was looking for a photographer for her wedding. \u201cShe ended up being my wedding photographer,\u201d she recalls, \u201cand an important part of that day.\u201d Today, Martinez and Harvey are close friends. \u201cMoving to a new place, it always takes some time to fit in,\u201d says Harvey. \u201cSonia made it easy for me\u2026 and knowing her has helped me meet so many members in the building and people outside, too.\u201d Plus, Martinez plays an important part in Harvey\u2019s \u201cHumans\u201d project: \u201cShe gives me ideas of who to interview.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Downtime: <\/strong>\u201cEvery Sunday I spend the whole day meal prepping,\u201d Harvey says, and she often shares her breakfasts with coworkers. \u201cOatmeal bites for everyone!\u201d  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Favorite place on earth: <\/strong>Puerto Vallarta, where her parents have an apartment. \u201cI\u2019ve lived in nine countries and traveled to over 60 when I was a flight attendant, and Mexico is my favorite place on the planet,\u201d she says. She enjoys Puerto Vallarta\u2019s small-town vibe, and says that even if it\u2019s been a year and a half since she\u2019s visited, the shop owners around her parents\u2019 place often remember her name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
