Even when Keith was diagnosed with cancer in 2015\u2014a result of his relief efforts at Ground Zero in the aftermath of the 9\/11 terrorist attacks\u2014he was determined to make it onto the show. \u201cI\u2019d help him take pictures of the cutting boards and film his audition video,\u201d remembers Kaley. When he was in hospice care, she shipped out the Amazon orders for his <a href=\"https:\/\/firehousechefky.com\/\">Cup Board Pro<\/a>, a cutting board with a side attachment that collects trimmings. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keith lost his battle with cancer in March 2018, before he had the chance to see his dream become a reality. Almost exactly a month after he passed, Kaley and her siblings, Christian, 21, and Keira, 15, got a call from the team at <em>Shark Tank<\/em>. Producers had seen the audition video the Young siblings submitted on their father\u2019s behalf and wanted to fly him to Los Angeles to pitch the Cup Board Pro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Kaley, pursuing her father\u2019s passion project was a given. \u201cI wanted to continue where he left off,\u201d she says. It\u2019s exactly what she had done in 2012 when she and her siblings lost their mother, Beth, to breast cancer. Five days after Beth\u2019s passing, Kaley not only taught her mother\u2019s regular yoga classes, but also took over as the owner of her wellness studio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"845\" height=\"1101\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/wework-ideas-firehouse-kids-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48455\"\/><figcaption>&#8220;It was always our dad\u2019s dream to be on <em>Shark Tank<\/em>,&#8221; says Kaley of Keith, a firefighter-turned-chef, who lost his battle with cancer in 2018. Photograph courtesy of The Firehouse Chef Keith Young<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m grateful that both my parents had something for me to continue to share with the world,\u201d Kaley says. \u201cEverything we\u2019re doing, we\u2019re doing in honor of them.\u201d Now, she and her siblings are carrying the torch of both legacies. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In June 2018, Kaley, Christian, and Keira flew to L.A. with Keith\u2019s Cup Board Pro, and on Father\u2019s Day, they fulfilled his dream of pitching his invention on <em>Shark Tank<\/em>. All five Sharks (Mark Cuban, Lori Greiner, Daymond John, Kevin O&#8217;Leary, and guest Matt Higgins) wanted in, agreeing to split an investment of $100,000 for 20 percent of the business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Within minutes of their episode airing last October, the Youngs sold all 2,000 of the Cup Board Pros they had in stock. Since then, they\u2019ve signed a licensing agreement with kitchenware mecca Williams-Sonoma, and have accepted WeWork\u2019s offer of an office of their own so that they no longer have to operate out of their family home. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Youngs had their choice of WeWork spaces, but selected New York City\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/175-varick-st--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork 175 Varick St<\/a> in west SoHo intentionally. \u201cOur dad\u2019s last firehouse was in SoHo, so just to be able to be where he would come to work every day was important to us,\u201d Kaley explains. And she couldn\u2019t help but notice the building\u2019s cross street: King\u2014their mother\u2019s maiden name. \u201cComing here is a gift,\u201d Kaley says of their new office and community. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1336\" height=\"891\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/06\/wework-ideas-cup-board-pro-new-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-48747\"\/><figcaption>Within minutes of their &#8220;Shark Tank&#8221; episode airing last October, the Youngs sold all 2,000 of the Cup Board Pros they had in stock. Photograph courtesy of Williams Sonoma<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The siblings have already received support and encouragement at their new space. \u201cStarting a company is insanely hard, and they\u2019re dealing with the blessing\u2014and the challenge\u2014of having massive exposure right off the bat,\u201d says Dovi Vogel, the manager of WeWork Labs at 175 Varick St. \u201cIt\u2019s clear how motivated Kaley is to turn this into a functioning, sustainable business going forward, and not just a product.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the next five years, Kaley envisions more variations of their existing product and maybe a knife collection. Long-term, she wants to use her passion for interior design\u2014something she was studying at FIT before her mother\u2019s diagnosis\u2014to design comfortable spaces for firehouses, and equipping each kitchen with its own Cup Board Pro. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no question that life has thrown the Young family some significant curveballs, but for Kaley, trusting that she\u2019s exactly where she\u2019s meant to be has filled her with peace and determination. \u201cNo matter where you are in life, you\u2019re never going to have it fully figured out,\u201d she says. \u201cYou\u2019re only as strong as you make yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since filming &#8216;Shark Tank&#8217;
