Startup founders have infamously unpredictable daily schedules as they work to establish and grow their businesses. What does such an entrepreneur\u2019s weekly, daily, or even hourly routine look like when sometimes there aren\u2019t enough hours in a day? In the<\/em> Startup Diaries<\/a>,<\/em><\/strong> founders walk us through a week in their lives and show what it really takes to get a fledgling business off the ground.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lisa Skeete Tatum spent a decade working as a venture capitalist when she decided she wanted to try something new. But what? \u201cI didn\u2019t know,\u201d she says. \u201cEveryone expected me to know, including myself, and it felt pretty awful.\u201d The silver lining to her temporary aimlessness was that it gave her the idea for Landit<\/a>, a career pathing platform that offers personalized brand development, coaching, and more to people who want to grow or redirect their career\u2014but don\u2019t know where to begin. \u201cPivots are hard,\u201d Tatum says. \u201cI thought, if it\u2019s hard for me\u2014and I had a whole bunch of people trying to support me\u2014then it might seem insurmountable for others.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Initially, Landit was marketed toward women, but since officially launching in 2017, it\u2019s taken a more universal approach. \u201cNow companies are using Landit to not only invest in their women but also in their people of color, millennials, you name it,\u201d says Tatum, a member at WeWork 1460 Broadway<\/a> in New York City. Although the platform touts a \u201cone size fits one\u201d model\u2014meaning your experience on the platform will be tailored to your specific professional needs\u2014it\u2019s as much intended for corporate use as it is for individuals. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGreat companies will always attract great people,\u201d Tatum says. \u201cThe issue is, What happens when they get there? Do they progress? Are they able to bring the full measure of themselves?<\/em> Too often, the answer is no.\u201d That\u2019s in part because company resources typically go to folks already in the C-suite. \u201cThe investment happens at the top of the pyramid, but most of us don\u2019t get there,\u201d Tatum says. \u201cLandit wants to take all those things that would typically be reserved for the top\u201d\u2014like brand development and coaching\u2014\u201cknit them together, and put them in the hands of anyone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year, the company raised $13 million<\/a> in a Series A funding round led by WeWork. \u201cRaising money, period, is hard,\u201d Tatum says. \u201cWe\u2019re one of the few companies led by a woman of color to have raised [that much].\u201d With that round closed, Tatum is focused on staffing up and growing her company\u2019s clientele. (She declines to share numbers: \u201cYou\u2019d have to come work for Landit!\u201d) Below, she shares how a recent workweek unfolded for the mother of two. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Monday<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

4:53 a.m.<\/strong> Wake up before my 5 a.m. alarm. Take five minutes to mentally run through the day. Head downstairs to our workout room to meditate for 10 minutes. (I\u2019m a work in progress!) Jump on the Peloton for a 30-minute ride. Feels like 90.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 a.m<\/strong>. Run upstairs to quickly get dressed, then back downstairs to make breakfast for the boys (they\u2019re 17 and 15). Write out goals for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 a.m.<\/strong> Catch up with the boys and sync with my husband over breakfast. My younger son plays me his latest piano piece, and my older son tells me about his research paper. Realize we are going to be late.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7:29 a.m.<\/strong> Rush everyone to the car to head to school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 a.m.<\/strong> Take New Jersey Transit to the office in New York. I always sit in the quiet car. Today I listen to CNN on Sirius with AirPods. Get off the train and get pastries for the team at Maison Kayser<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 a.m.\u20131 p.m.<\/strong> All-hands team meeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1:30 p.m.<\/strong> Zoom call with a current customer about expanding their cohort. We\u2019ll often start by targeting a particular group within the organization, then roll out from there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 p.m.<\/strong> Conference call with attorneys to review pending customer contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4 p.m.<\/strong> Conference call with strategic partner to review the terms of contract. We haven\u2019t announced this partnership yet, so I can\u2019t say much. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

5 p.m.<\/strong> Sync with VP of engineering on product road map. You have to listen to your members, because they will tell you what\u2019s working in your product and what\u2019s not working. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 p.m.<\/strong> Commute home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7:30 p.m.<\/strong> Hubby picks up dim sum for dinner. Sit around the kitchen table with him and our boys. Lots of posturing about who\u2019s the best ping-pong player. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

9:30 p.m.<\/strong> Back on call with Landit team members to review upcoming customer launch and contract. I hate the term \u201cwork-life balance.\u201d I practice hyper-prioritization. You have to think about what\u2019s the most important and impactful thing that you can do, and then everything else lines up behind that. If there\u2019s a task or goal you need to achieve, focus on that and then move to the next thing. Otherwise, it takes twice as long.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11:30 p.m.<\/strong> Drift off to sleep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tuesday<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

5 a.m.<\/strong> Wake up. Take five minutes to mentally run through the day. Not up for Peloton this morning, so I opt for the kindler, gentler elliptical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 a.m.<\/strong> It\u2019s a game day for my older son, and my turn for team snacks, so I place an emergency order for grilled cheese, cookies, and water from Panera for rapid pickup. Prepare breakfast. Discuss evening logistics with the entire Tatum squad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7:15 a.m.<\/strong> Everyone out the door.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 a.m.<\/strong> Train to New York. Read the New York Times<\/em> on my iPhone. Check email and play Wordscapes<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9:30 a.m.\u201312:30 p.m. <\/strong>One-on-one meetings with each team member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

12:30\u20131:30 p.m.<\/strong> \u201cLST Focus Time.\u201d This time is sacred to me. I use it to think\u2014about priorities, strategies\u2014or to read up on something relevant to the business. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1:30\u20132:30 p.m.<\/strong> Interview several job candidates. We just closed our Series A funding, and the money we raised is all about scaling. We have to hire an A+ team to help us change the world!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4\u20135 p.m<\/strong>. Watch son\u2019s tennis match. Glad I commuted back in time to see him crush it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6\u20137:30 p.m<\/strong>. Virtual launch event with Fortune 500 customer. We introduce Landit, explain the benefits, then they\u2019re off to the races.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9:30 p.m.<\/strong> Family time. This is where I get my joy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

10\u201311 p.m.<\/strong> Finish up Landit items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 p.m.<\/strong> Plan for the following day. Bedtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wednesday<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

5 a.m.<\/strong> Wake up. Take five minutes to mentally run through the day. I always take the first part of the morning to ground myself. I think a lot of people just get up and start moving, and they may not have a plan. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6:30 a.m.<\/strong> Leave for the office. Send \u201cI love you and have a great day\u201d text message to family group chat so they have a note from me first thing in the morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8\u201310 a.m.<\/strong> LST Focus Time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 a.m.<\/strong> Meeting with Landit coaches to share updates, insights, and priorities for next month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1:30\u20132 p.m.<\/strong> Interview a job candidate. We\u2019re looking for folks who are naturally curious. Grit is also super important. And we have zero tolerance for drama\u2014I mean zero<\/em>\u2014so we\u2019re looking for folks that value transparency, because that\u2019s one of our core values.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2\u20133 p.m<\/strong>. Landit investor meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3:30\u20134:30 p.m.<\/strong> Call with potential new customer. I land it! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 p.m.<\/strong> Have my first dinner and the kids\u2019 second dinner. Ice cream for my husband.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11 p.m.<\/strong> Bedtime. Lights all the way <\/em>out. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 a.m.<\/strong> Brainstorm with board member about go-to-market strategy for a new vertical we\u2019re launching. (No spoilers!) As an entrepreneur you have to take advantage of your resources, and we\u2019re very fortunate that we have some amazing board members.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

11:30 a.m.\u201312 p.m.<\/strong> Landit candidate interview. Last one of the week. Two are standing out for me at this point: One took the time to sign up for the product itself. When he came to the interview, he said, \u201cThis is what I love. This is why I fit. This is how I would like to contribute.\u201d I was like, \u201cGet that dude right now!\u201d The other sent an email three hours after her interview that bullet-pointed what she heard, what she was excited about, and some ideas she had. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

12:30\u20131:30 p.m.<\/strong> LST Focus Time!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2\u20133 p.m.<\/strong> Pipeline review with chief business development officer. The pipeline is so robust it\u2019s a matter of who we should approach next. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3\u20134 p.m.<\/strong> Financial reviews with CFO\/accountant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6 p.m.<\/strong> Family dinner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

8\u201310 p.m.<\/strong> Back online with Landit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

10\u201311 p.m.<\/strong> Mini TV binge time. I\u2019m a big foodie, so we watch a little bit of MasterChef<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

11:30 p.m.<\/strong> Bedtime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Friday                      <\/strong>\t<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

6 a.m.<\/strong> Sleep-in-late day! Take five minutes to mentally run through the day. It\u2019s an elliptical morning. Get dressed. Reflect on the week and my accomplishments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8 a.m.<\/strong> See the boys off to school.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9:30 a.m.<\/strong> Customer meeting at their office to discuss the next phase of our expansion. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

12 p.m.<\/strong> Landit Expert Session Webinar with global customer. We host these one-hour webinars as part of our package. Today we\u2019re discussing how to build your personal brand, but we also have a series on how to build your board, how to negotiate, how to take risks, etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1\u20132 p.m.<\/strong> LST Focus Time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2 p.m.<\/strong> Team meeting. We ask ourselves, \u201cWhat did we learn this week from our customers that we want to think about incorporating in our product? What\u2019s the feedback?\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

3:30\u20134:30 p.m<\/strong>. Investor update meeting. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

7 p.m.<\/strong> Dinner with hubby.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

9 p.m.<\/strong> Family ping-pong game! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

10:30 p.m.<\/strong> Sleep. It\u2019s been a long but rewarding week. I don\u2019t trust when people say, \u201cOh, I want to be an entrepreneur\u201d\u2014because it\u2019s really hard. You have to have a bigger mission if you\u2019re going to be willing to run through fire. And I am <\/em>on a mission: to democratize career success for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
