It\u2019s a natural assumption\u2014Cohen, founder and CEO of Jigsaw (a technology incubator created by Google), worked in the office of Condoleeza Rice as one of the youngest foreign-policy planners in American history; served as chief adviser to Google\u2019s Eric Schmidt; and is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York Times<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bestselling author, having written two books on the intersection of technology and foreign policy. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His new book, as it turns out, is a little different. \u201cIt\u2019s about dead presidents,\u201d Cohen laughed at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/500-7th-ave--new-york-city--NY?utm_campaign=1689946285&amp;utm_term=69559402007&amp;utm_content=341203136322&amp;utm_source=ads-google&amp;utm_medium=cpc&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds&amp;&amp;gclid=EAIaIQobChMIzb_--fnX4QIVqrSzCh3ZUA-pEAAYASAAEgJwpPD_BwE&amp;gclsrc=aw.ds\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork 500 7th Ave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in New York City. Cohen, along with MSNBC political analyst Elise Jordan, was there to discuss <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Accidental-Presidents-Eight-Changed-America\/dp\/1501109820\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accidental Presidents: Eight Men Who Changed America<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a book he\u2019s been waiting to write his whole life. As a child, Cohen was captivated by American history, and as an adult, his focus narrowed to the eight vice presidents who ascended to the top spot after assassinations and illnesses claimed the men elected to the job. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Far from being fated, according to Cohen, the rise of men like John Tyler (vice president to William Henry Harrison), Theodore Roosevelt (who became president after the assassination of William McKinley), and Harry Truman (successor to Franklin Delano Roosevelt) could have been cataclysmic for the nation, and it\u2019s clear not all of the accidental presidents on Cohen\u2019s list were cut out for the job. There was Andrew Johnson, whose biggest claim to fame as Abraham Lincoln\u2019s second-in-command was getting so drunk at Lincoln\u2019s second inaugural that, says Cohen, \u201che slobbered all over the ceremonial Bible,\u201d or Chester A. Arthur, who spent more time redecorating the White House than he did governing. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Others, though, Cohen holds up as examples of leaders who triumphed over the odds and more than rose to meet the demands of their new positions. \u201cIn 82 days as vice president,\u201d he says of Harry Truman, \u201che only meets FDR twice. Doesn\u2019t get a single intelligence briefing, doesn\u2019t meet a single world leader, isn\u2019t briefed on the new patent project. He was an awestruck provincial politician from Missouri.\u201d And yet with the help of key advisers who understood the importance of Truman\u2019s success, he effectively ended World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/04\/wework-creator-jared-cohen-event-inline-1-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-33257\"\/><figcaption><em>Accidental Presidents: Eight Men Who Changed America<\/em>, out now.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the stakes of modern-day business might not be <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">quite<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as high, Cohen does see a correlation between presidents like Harry Truman and contemporary CEOs. \u201cThe ones that succeeded were the ones who had a combination of two things happen. The advisers they inherited wanted them to be successful and worked with them to help make them successful. And two, they had the judgment to figure out where to listen to them and where not to listen to them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s this balance of strategy and vision that Cohen frames as universal. \u201cIn many respects, the story of accidental presidents, it\u2019s like CEOs taking over for founders: finding that balance between leaving your own mark and continuing the legacy of your predecessor.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s clear that for Cohen, what we can learn from the men who weren\u2019t supposed to be president goes beyond the shock at how many times we\u2019ve come perilously close to political chaos. Rather, their stories offer a glimpse into what <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> might do if suddenly faced with daunting new responsibilities. \u00a0\u201cEvery business leader should get a nice dose of history,\u201d he says, \u201cand I think biographies are good for the soul.
