But after advising thousands of clients, Barbara Ginty, a certified financial planner in New York City, began to spot certain patterns\u2014and saw that women tended to underestimate their financial capabilities. \u201cWomen will come in and say, \u2018This is a dumb question\u2019 or \u2018I don\u2019t understand it,\u2019 but men rarely start the conversation that way,\u201d she says. &nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intent on reaching a wider audience beyond her clients, friends, and family, Ginty created a podcast,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/podcast\/planancial\/id1343803894?mt=2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Planancial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to empower women to take control of their financial lives. Each episode features a conversation with a different anonymous female guest, where Ginty digs deep and demystifies the woman\u2019s money matters, and offers advice on everything from saving more money to paying off student loan debt to allocating funds. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWomen talk about everything else, but no one talks about money,\u201d she says. That\u2019s changing\u2014slowly. Aminatou Sow, founder of Tech LadyMafia and co-host of the podcast <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call Your Girlfriend,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> recently took to Twitter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/aminatou\/status\/1101998397098143744\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to encourage salary transparency<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, asking, \u201cHow do you know what your work is worth or if you\u2019re being underpaid or if someone is giving you a fair shake if you don&#8217;t have a clue about what amounts we&#8217;re actually dealing with here?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ginty herself has been comfortable talking about money from an early age. She spent her childhood stuffing envelopes and learning about compound interest in her family\u2019s financial-planning practice. At age 12, she got a job at a bakery, waking up at 5 a.m. to head to the \u201coffice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today Ginty, a longtime member at<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> New York City\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/401-park-ave-s--new-york-city--NY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork 401 Park Ave S<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has her<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.barbaraginty.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">own financial firm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with outposts in Manhattan and Kingston, New York. She also<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.planancial.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">teaches in person<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and online classes at SUNY Ulster on topics like tackling student loans and becoming a \u201cfinancial rock star.\u201d It\u2019s one more way for her to spread the word of financial literacy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether you\u2019re an entrepreneur or cubicle careerist, being financially educated is critical to success, says Ginty, who notes that more than 70 percent of people in the U.S.<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/better\/health\/most-us-live-paycheck-paycheck-what-it-does-your-health-ncna816411\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">are living paycheck to paycheck<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cPeople always want 20 percent more than what they have,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Surprisingly, Ginty says that having more money isn\u2019t the answer; in her experience, the people who are happiest with their money tend to be the ones who stick to a budget no matter how much money is coming in. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But for everyone, having a healthy relationship with money starts with the right mind-set. &#8220;To achieve your goals, it pays to catch up or get ahead of the game,&#8221; says Ginty. \u201cThe sooner you learn about money, the sooner you can get future-rich.\u201d Her tips should get you started.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Rethink your to-do list. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite studies ranking money as a bigger source of anxiety than even one\u2019s health, most people never prioritize managing it, whether by setting up a 401K or automating savings transfers. Ginty acknowledges that these moves don\u2019t lead to instant gratification\u2014so she urges women to think about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>future<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> successes. How would it feel to have your loans paid off? Stick to a plan and by this time next year, that can be a reality.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Talk to your colleagues. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pay disparity in the workplace is a major issue, and one solution is to simply talk. \u201cI definitely advocate that women are transparent with one another in regards to salary,\u201d says Ginty. \u201cKnowledge is power, and being able to talk openly with your close friends and colleagues\u2014male or female\u2014about salary can help you better advocate for yourself.\u201d &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Follow the trail. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you know your gross salary? Your monthly expenses\u2014from rent to recurring subscriptions? \u201cKnow what\u2019s coming in, where it\u2019s going, and whether your spending is serving a purpose,\u201d she says. Analyze your credit, debit, and bank statements, and track your expenses with apps, or even on paper.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Mix up your strategies. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your money\u2019s purpose is up to you\u2014and so are the savings tricks you can use. If you want to save $50 a week, stop buying lunch at work\u2014or pick up a part-time job. Use your personality type and schedule to help formulate your strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Create a five-year plan. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ginty suggests taking a macro view of the situation and considering your long-term future. Plotting a path to big dreams like buying a place to live or retiring super-early can give you a roadmap and help make daily changes more palatable.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Divvy up your wins. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When your salary increases, your lifestyle increases at the same rate, often without you realizing. Scored a big raise? Great! Now, Ginty says, \u201chide\u201d your money from yourself. Split the extra\u2014put half in a 401K or IRA so you don\u2019t have access to it, and dedicate the other half to your five-year plan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Start your emergency fund. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You need a big ol\u2019 pile of money you can tap into in worst-case scenarios\u2014in cash, says Ginty, not the stock market. \u201cI want it to do nothing,\u201d she says, because when you do need the money, the market will inevitably be down. Strive to save three to six months of living expenses, but don\u2019t get overwhelmed by a huge number: \u201cIt\u2019s better to start with something than with nothing.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Prepare for April 15. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This tax year, standard deductions have doubled to $12,000, and if you operate a pass-through entity like an S-Corp, you\u2019ll get a 20 percent deduction. Don\u2019t leave filing until the last minute. And before you receive your tax refund, plan exactly what you\u2019ll do: Pay down debt? Boost your emergency fund?
