{"id":32837,"date":"2019-03-22T11:09:09","date_gmt":"2019-03-22T15:09:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator\/?p=32837"},"modified":"2020-04-17T16:11:23","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T20:11:23","slug":"biden-cancer-initiative-convenes-cancer-research-collaboration-hubs","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/biden-cancer-initiative-convenes-cancer-research-collaboration-hubs","title":{"rendered":"Biden Cancer Initiative convenes cancer research hubs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After completing his last treatment for stage-four throat cancer in 2009, Michael Hayes, a serial entrepreneur with a software-engineering background, spent years thinking <em>How can I use software to solve problems in the real world?<\/em><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The problems he was most interested in solving were the big ones\u2014cancer prevention, detection, and cure. But it wasn\u2019t until around 2012, when breakthroughs in machine-learning made it possible for computers to read massive amounts of medical-records data, that Hayes began to see the role software could play in cancer care. In 2018, Hayes founded the nonprofit research organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cancerai.org\/\">CancerAI<\/a>, a member at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/625-massachusetts-ave--boston--MA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork 625 Massachusetts Ave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Boston that aims to break down the walls between organizations and across sectors to bring the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">results seen in experimental research to the real world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Removing the barriers in communication, says Hayes, is key to developing the artificial intelligence needed to improve cancer prevention, detection, and treatment. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;In some ways, everyone who develops cancer has a unique case,\u201d he says. \u201cThat makes fighting cancer extremely daunting, which is why collaboration amongst different cancer-fighting groups is so important.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hayes and CancerAI had a seat at the table this past fall, when WeWork and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/bidencancer.org\/\">Biden Cancer Initiative<\/a> (BCI), <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a nonprofit founded by former <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vice President Joe Biden and his wife, Dr. Jill Biden, launched their \u201ccollaboration hubs\u201d in cities across the country. The aim: to make sure that every person, no matter where they are in their cancer journey, has a voice in the fight against the disease. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">CancerAI is a founding member of the collaboration hub in Boston, and in the organization&#8217;s first session, members of the <a href=\"https:\/\/ki.mit.edu\/\">Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.broadinstitute.org\/\">Broad Institute<\/a> were present.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was small, it was the first step, but there was a lot of interest in the collaboration in the Boston area,\u201d says Hayes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These hubs\u2014which have expanded to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">New York City&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and San Francisco\u2014broaden what is normally a one-sided conversation to include stakeholders or members of the community who would not normally be involved in decision-making. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly important to get perspectives beyond CEOs of top pharmaceutical companies,\u201d says Catharine Young, BCI senior director of science policy. \u201cWhether it\u2019s a nurse or a caretaker, they all bring with them a wealth of knowledge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">D<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">r. Rahul Remanan, who has hosted sessions associated with BCI for years, led&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a collaboration hub <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/750-lexington-ave--new-york-city--NY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork 750 Lexington Ave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on New York&#8217;s Upper East Side. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gathering of about 70 professionals<\/span><b>\u2014<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mostly technologists and health-care practitioners\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remanan, who is trained as a doctor and founder of the full-stack AI firm <a href=\"https:\/\/www.moad.computer\/\">Moad Computer<\/a>, focused on the idea of open data systems used in early cancer detection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI want to reach out to as many people as possible around [the technology] because I know I can\u2019t do it on my own,\u201d says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remanan, who shared his collected data before discussing the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lessons and range of challenges of using artificial intelligence in cancer detection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The push for shared data in medical research is a departure from tradition with a huge potential payoff: The <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hope is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that if these technologies become successful on a wide scale, the highest-quality cancer care can become available to everyone. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The software systems <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Remanan<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Hayes hope to build <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">can help doctors by flagging high- and low-priority images, greatly increasing the likelihood of getting a diagnosis for the people who need it most, no <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">matter where they live or their socioeconomic levels.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[We would] <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have an efficiency that\u2019s accessible to anyone from across the world,\u201d he explained. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to pay more and more money to get quality care.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe future is here\u2014it\u2019s just unevenly distributed,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/koiosmedical.com\/\">Koios Medical<\/a> CEO Chad McClennan, an AI medical-image-analysis platform approved by the FDA that analyzes the data in images and notifies physicians when something in an image, often naked to the human eye, looks suspicious. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This virtual second opinion can level the playing field for patients everywhere. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ccuracy goes up, fewer people are sent home mistakenly, and fewer people are subject to treatment that turns out to be unnecessary. Koios, a member at New York\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/500-7th-ave--new-york-city--NY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork 500 7th Ave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has half a million images linked to pathology results and is currently deployed with about <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">50 physicians in the New York area. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You have an expert\u2019s second opinion at your disposal instantly and ubiquitously,\u201d says McClennan, who is currently planning a hackathon at a collaboration hub. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future that McClennan speaks of can be available to everyone\u2014regardless of geographic location or income\u2014only if the fight against cancer extends <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">across silos and disciplines<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s hard and it takes time, but I\u2019m optimistic that it will happen,\u201d Hayes says. \u201cWithin a couple of years, some of these [software] tools will be quite prevalent in
