{"id":32073,"date":"2019-02-14T11:49:47","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T16:49:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator\/?p=32073"},"modified":"2020-03-30T18:12:25","modified_gmt":"2020-03-30T22:12:25","slug":"in-an-increasingly-crowded-field-dating-apps-are-looking-for-love","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/professional-development\/creativity-culture\/in-an-increasingly-crowded-field-dating-apps-are-looking-for-love","title":{"rendered":"In a crowded field, dating apps are looking for love"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While its millions of customers were looking for romance, one of the largest online dating apps in the U.S. changed its status to \u201cin a relationship.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hinge.co\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hinge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a dating app that says it&#8217;s \u201cdesigned to be deleted,\u201d announced a couple of days before Valentine\u2019s Day that it is now wholly owned by<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/mtch.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Match Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The terms of the sale were not disclosed.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This news means that almost all the big-name dating apps\u2014including<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.match.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Match<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/tinder.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tinder<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.okcupid.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OkCupid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014are now owned by the same company. The only major player Match Group hasn\u2019t scooped up is<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/bumble.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bumble<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, where women are the first to swipe right. (Match Group sued Bumble last year, alleging that it stole its intellectual property; Bumble countersued for harassment.) <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All this consolidation isn\u2019t necessarily bad news for those looking for love. Match Group has been hands-off with the companies it acquires, encouraging them to maintain their own cultures. Each of the companies it\u2019s bought attracts a certain demographic\u2014Hinge, for example, does well with urban, educated millennial women\u2014that Match Group wants to capture.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tim MacGougan, chief product officer at Hinge, says Match Group made it clear it wants Hinge to be distinctive from the rest of its portfolio.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cTinder celebrates single life,\u201d he says. \u201cMatch feels matrimonial. Hinge is different. Our members are people in their 20s and 30s who are looking for meaningful connections with other people.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"breaking-away-from-the-pack\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Breaking away from the pack<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In two separate panel discussions held this week at WeWork\u2014one hosted by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/flatironschool.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Flatiron School<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the other co-sponsored by the nonprofit <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/flatironschool.com\/blog\/eager-to-make-connections-engineer-finds-the-perfect-job-at-a-dating-app\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Out in Tech<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014engineers, executives, and founders of a range of dating apps talked about how they distinguish themselves in an increasingly crowded field. Hinge, for instance, considers itself an expert on what makes a good date. It even reimburses its employees up to $200 a month if they\u2019ll post about their dates on the app.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople here have been very creative,\u201d McGougan says. \u201cThey try something new and share it with our members.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hinge, which has had an estimated 3 million downloads, even sends follow-ups to members who have met through the app, asking how things went. This information will eventually allow it to make better matches.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.okcupid.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">OkCupid<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the staff puts a lot of effort into making sure members are compatible before they even meet. It asks members hard-hitting questions that might be a deal-breaker for others scanning their profile. One example: \u201cIs climate change real?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn the past few years, people have shown they care a lot about politics,\u201d says engineering manager Jordan Guggenheim. \u201cSo we have been asking members questions like, \u2018Do you prefer that your date shares your political views?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a hot-button topic, but one that reveals a lot about people. \u201cThese simple questions carry a lot of weight in terms of who people choose to date long-term,\u201d Guggenheim says.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guggenheim\u2014a graduate of Flatiron School\u2014says he\u2019s proud that the company remains ahead of the curve on issues like gender identity.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;We absolutely take the stance that we support more than the binary gender options,\u201d he says. \u201cWe were one of the first apps to offer 22 different genders and 12 different orientations. We want you to be able to best express how you identify.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"creating-a-safe-space\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Creating a safe space<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the larger apps are all being gobbled up by the same parent company, smaller apps see a chance to distinguish themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Morgen Bromell, CEO of a newly relaunched dating app \u201cfor queer people of all genders\u201d called<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/thurst.co\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thurst<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, appreciates that mainstream platforms are becoming more inclusive. But being able to check a box isn\u2019t enough.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was bummed that there wasn\u2019t a platform for queer people, trans people, and nonbinary people,\u201d says Bromell. \u201cWe needed a place where people didn\u2019t feel fetishized, where they wouldn\u2019t be targeted for who they are.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-32085\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/Morgen-Bromwell-of-Thurst-Out-in-Tech-WeWork-1-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32085\"\/><figcaption>&#8220;I want to dispel the idea that the relationships you make on an app are less important than those you make in person,\u201d says Thurst CEO Morgen Bromell.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bromell launched a beta version of the app in 2016, but almost immediately, trolls lashed out at users. The team spent the next year working on creating a more secure space for their community.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the app has developed, it\u2019s also become a social network where members create close friendships.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;I want to dispel the idea that the relationships you make on an app are less important than those you make in person,\u201d says Bromell. \u201cA relationship you start online can be just as valuable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eric Silverberg, CEO of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scruff.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scruff<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, says that the gay dating app fulfills several different purposes.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs Scruff a hookup app? Yes, absolutely,\u201d he says. \u201cIs it a social network? Yes, absolutely. And it\u2019s everything in between.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the platform launched in 2010, Scruff was among the first gay dating apps. The field has gotten a lot more crowded since then, so Silverberg has to keep attracting members with new features.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve been beta testing a live queer quiz show on its app called \u2018Hosting,\u2019\u201d he says. \u201cWhen we saw<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/itunes.apple.com\/us\/app\/hq-trivia-words\/id1232278996?mt=8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HQ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> launch a little over a year ago, it got us excited about the notion of doing something live. What if we got everyone on Scruff to log on at the same time and have a shared experience?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Silverberg says that the app\u2019s most important function is perhaps to be a kind of virtual community center, providing its members with access to information they might not otherwise know how to find.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re very proud of the fact that Scruff has partnered with thousands of LGBTQ nonprofits and health organizations to get their messages in front of our community,\u201d he says. \u201cOne of our responsibilities to the gay and queer community is to forge those connections.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Platforms
