{"id":32005,"date":"2019-02-19T10:47:26","date_gmt":"2019-02-19T15:47:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator\/?p=32005"},"modified":"2020-04-17T16:21:07","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T20:21:07","slug":"the-startup-bringing-organic-food-to-south-l-a-s-food-desert","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/the-startup-bringing-organic-food-to-south-l-a-s-food-desert","title":{"rendered":"The startup bringing organic food to South L.A.&#8217;s &#8216;food desert&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Department of Agriculture estimates that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.usda.gov\/oce\/foodwaste\/faqs.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">30 to 40 percent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the food supply in the United States is wasted, making the scraps from our tables and fridges the \u201csingle-largest component going into municipal landfills.\u201d At the same time, nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2016\/12\/13\/americas-dirty-little-secret-42-million-are-suffering-from-hunger.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 in 8 Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014nearly 40 million people\u2014faced food insecurity in 2017. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A number of the food insecure live in \u201cfood deserts,\u201d neighborhoods where easy access to healthful, affordable food is limited, but unhealthy\u2014and cheap\u2014fast food is plentiful and has been a staple for generations. One under-30 entrepreneur, Olympia Auset, aims to change the status quo in her South Los Angeles community with her startup <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/suprmarkt.la\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">S\u00fcprmarkt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBecause L.A. is kind of the health capital of the country, people don\u2019t even know that these [other] parts of L.A. exist,\u201d she explains. \u201cBasically, anywhere where there are more European residents, you can\u2019t walk down the street without running into at least three grocery stores. But when you\u2019re in a place like South L.A., you\u2019re literally having to drive to a grocery store that probably has really crappy produce even if it\u2019s the same [chain].\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Driving for miles just to secure quality groceries is a huge burden for people who don\u2019t have cars or a lot of money. So Auset brings more healthful options wherever they\u2019re needed. \u201cEvery week, we pop up in a place where there\u2019s not a lot of access to food and provide organic produce affordably,\u201d she explains. \u201cWe also have a subscription service, which makes up for a good portion of the produce we provide.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The subscription boxes ($26.50 per week or $104 per month) include fruits, vegetables, herbs, and dry goods, and the company\u2019s one-for-one programs allows customers to sponsor subscriptions for others. Auset says about half of S\u00fcprmarkt\u2019s goods are locally sourced from the <a href=\"http:\/\/scfcoop.southcentralfarmers.com\/\">South Central Farmers\u2019 Cooperative<\/a>. Items that don\u2019t grow in the U.S. (bananas and mangoes, for example) come from an organic wholesaler in L.A. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auset knows firsthand how difficult life can be without easy access to fresh food. A vegan since her freshman year of college, Auset was struck by the necessity of taking a bus for two hours to find a store with good produce. While attending Howard University in Washington, D.C., she worked on a community garden and became better informed about food production. When she moved back to L.A. following graduation, she decided to forgo a career in public relations to work on projects that \u201ceducate and empower people\u201d about food.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-32013\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/Suprmrkt-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32013\"\/><figcaption>S\u00fcprmarkt sells more than 200 pounds of produce each week.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auset began working with a raw-food manufacturer and meeting with a small group of friends each week to watch documentaries and cook together. The first iteration of S\u00fcprmarkt came from those intimate events. In June 2016, a friend\u2019s mom loaned the group of three $300 to host a larger dinner at her house and invite more people. The first public S\u00fcprmarkt was launched in Leimert Park that July.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt was very scrappy,\u201d Auset says. \u201cWe didn\u2019t even own a table at the time. We just borrowed one and went out there and used what we had, which was maybe $60 of produce.\u201d The initial response came in small waves, she says, but was very positive. The thing Auset hears most often from friends and customers is that they\u2019re proud of the work she\u2019s doing.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Word steadily spread about S\u00fcprmarkt. Auset advertised the event on social media and got a shoutout from a popular Instagram account called <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/veganfoodshare\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Vegan Food Share<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She also contacted digital-media company Black Vegans Rock, which led to a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.blackvegansrock.com\/blog\/2016\/7\/27\/feature-olympia-auset\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feature<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about S\u00fcprmarkt that garnered even more attention from other people of color interested in healthful living, including former Olympian Seba Johnson\u2014the youngest person to ski in the Winter Olympics and the first African-American Alpine skier.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cShe went to Howard University like I did and has been vegan since she was born,\u201d Auset says. \u201cShe came to the stand, saw what we were doing, and made a few suggestions\u2014including that we apply to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thepollinationproject.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pollination Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pollination Project gives out daily microgrants ($1,000 a day) to grassroots causes centered in vegan and sustainable living. Auset applied, and S\u00fcprmarkt received a grant. She also applied for and won a $2,500 fiscal sponsorship from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coopportunity.com\/our-coop\/our-history\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Co+opportunity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a cooperatively-owned grocery store in L.A. that she had been a member of for some time. Those early wins \u201cblossomed\u201d into other opportunities: Auset is now on the board of Co+op and reviews grants at the Pollination Project, \u201chelping other people to kind of circle everything forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That $3,500 in early funding was crucial to their start (\u201cWe were able to buy a fridge and run the entire first year off of that money,\u201d Auset says) but there is much more work to do. S\u00fcprmarkt relies on a staff of four paid employees and 10 volunteers of \u201cvarious levels of commitment.\u201d The company now sells more than 200 pounds of produce each week (about 10 cases of food), and feedback has suggested that demand is growing. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some subscribers share pictures of dishes they make with their S\u00fcprmarkt haul, emailing her directly or posting to social media. Other customers who are less familiar with the assorted herbs and greens in their boxes ask questions about how to use what they\u2019ve received. In 2017, after <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Afropunk<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> published an interview with Auset, orders started coming in from all over the country.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPeople were reaching out to us and saying, \u2018Thank you for this. Can you bring this to Alabama? Can you bring this to Chicago? Can you bring this here? Can you bring this there?\u2019\u201d she recalls. \u201cThat was really humbling, and it flew in the face of this general stereotype: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Oh, the reason they don\u2019t have anything good in their neighborhoods is because all they want to eat is junk food<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s really not true.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe can\u2019t ship produce [out of state],\u201d says Auset. But that hasn\u2019t stopped her dreams of expansion. \u201cBecause what we\u2019re doing can be done at a really small scale, you don\u2019t need a lot of money. But to do some of the bigger things that we want to do\u2014make it sustainable and grow\u2014it\u2019s been a process of understanding that I have to stop thinking small,\u201d she says. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of her goals is to open a brick-and-mortar location to \u201cprovide the food that people deserve\u201d all the time. Another is to expand into food deserts around the country. Last April, she launched <a href=\"http:\/\/suprmarkt.la\/give\/\">S\u00fcprseed<\/a>, a 501(c)3 affiliate organization that \u201cprovides educational programming and support meant to go along with providing the food.\u201d The nonprofit will screen films and share action items with attendees who want to learn more about food, nutrition, and socioeconomic and political history in L.A. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA lot of work has to be done in reversing palates, because your taste buds are based on what you\u2019ve been eating your whole life,\u201d Auset explains. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThat\u2019s why we have S\u00fcperseed\u2014to make sure that we\u2019re not just popping down and setting up produce and wondering why people don\u2019t want it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Auset\u2019s community-first approach seems to be working. She says it\u2019s easy to get \u201ctied to the mechanics\u201d of running a startup but that certain \u201cspecial, magical moments\u201d have helped her see S\u00fcprmarkt\u2019s impact. Once, a little boy running around Leimert Park came up to her stand, pointed at a banana, and asked what it was, so Auset gave him one to try. After seeing his positive response (\u201cWhy is this so good?\u201d) his brother asked for a banana, too\u2014which prompted their father to buy the rest. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another time, a woman who missed the S\u00fcprmarkt\u2019s hours of operation called Auset and asked what food was still available. \u201cI told her what we had left and she actually came to my house and got groceries,\u201d Auset recalls. \u201cAt that moment, it was this epiphany of, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Oh my God. I\u2019m actually a grocer!<\/em><\/span><\/i><em> <\/em><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>This is working<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight:
