The sentence lends itself to the wordplay, and yet, there is a path that leads straight from Dr. King to this Nigerian-born, Toronto-based founder of the growing beauty company<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/makeupformelaningirls.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Makeup for Melanin Girls Cosmetics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MFMG)\u2014and that is visibility and dignity for all black people.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When WeWork member Gbeleyi, 27, started MFMG, she was working full-time as a marketing and sales executive at a sizable tech company where she says the good salary and travel opportunities could not erase the racial microaggressions and sexism she experienced. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI tried to stay by telling them that losing seven women in one week meant that something was wrong,\u201d remembers Gbeleyi. \u201cI thought maybe I could help them. And all they said was, \u2018We can just hire more people.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MFMG began as an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/MFMGCosmetics\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram page<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> called \u201cMakeup for Melanin Girls\u201d in 2016. It showcased Gbeleyi\u2019s favorite beauty bloggers and products and served as a space where women could see an aesthetic that celebrated the diversity of darker skin tones. The namesake cosmetics line would not be launched until a year later. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI thought only a few of my friends would like the page, but it soon really took on a life of its own\u2014I got 10,000 followers within a month,\u201d she says. \u201cI realize now that I was building a community around a need I had. The page became this coffee shop where women could just come and hang out.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2017, she created a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/makeupformelaningirls.com\/blogs\/community\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blog<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the same name and used it as a platform to write about global events affecting the black diaspora, whether it was in entertainment, the arts, or beauty. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While balancing her digital community and working in tech, Gbeleyi would receive daily requests from her readers and followers to create her own makeup line. \u201cEventually, I was like, \u2018Let me put out one product and see how it goes.\u2019\u201d In 2017, MFMG released its first product, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=UkHCU-Pkfs4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Glitter Palette<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014without bringing in any partners\u2014and it sold out in two weeks on MFMG\u2019s e-commerce store. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The multi-use Glitter Palette comes packaged in a simple black and gold case and holds 18 bright, sparkly hues for everything from eyeshadow to body glitter. MFMG logo\u2019s simple font is prominently placed, reminding consumers that, yes, dark-skinned women can also rock bright colors. \u201cThat is still our most popular creation,\u201d says Gbeleyi.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image wp-image-31998 size-full\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/wework-creator-tomi-gbeleyi-headshot-571x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31998\"\/><figcaption>&#8220;I&#8217;ve loved makeup since I was a little girl, and I&#8217;ve always been a problem solver,&#8221; says Tomi Gbeleyi, founder of Makeup for Melanin Girls Cosmetics. &#8220;I looked at the industry and I was like, &#8216;This is a problem.'&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Gbeleyi, the makeup world and its anti-relationship with women of darker skin tones weren\u2019t just familiar to her as a consumer, but also as a model: She started while growing up in Nigeria and continued after she moved to Canada. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/fashion\/2016\/may\/10\/survey-finds-that-78-of-models-in-fashion-adverts-are-white\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much has been written<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/i-d.vice.com\/en_uk\/article\/pab8zz\/why-theres-still-much-to-do-in-the-fight-for-model-diversity\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">runway\u2019s lack of diversity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and the same homogeneity extends to the behind-the-scenes action. While modeling in Canada, Gbeleyi remembers being asked more than once to bring her own makeup to shoots \u201cjust in case\u201d the makeup artist didn\u2019t have any products for her skin tone. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne moment, in particular, stands out where I went to a casting call and I was the only black girl on the call sheet,\u201d she recalls. \u201cI remember the makeup artist scrambling in her bag trying to find something for me. In that moment, I just wanted to disappear into the ground because I felt like a burden. And all I had wanted to do was show up and do my job.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2015, Sudanese model Nykhor Paul <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpersbazaar.com\/fashion\/models\/news\/a11417\/nykhor-paul-makeup-racism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">published an Instagram post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> highlighting the scarcity of artists who know how to apply makeup on non-white skin. It quickly went viral. She named every notable fashion week around the world, from New York and Paris to Milan and London, as being culpable not only in failing to hire artists skilled at doing all skin tones but also of fostering an environment where black models are made to feel unwelcome. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cJust because you only book a few of us doesn&#8217;t mean you have the right to make us look ratchet,&#8221; Paul wrote in the caption. Gbeleyi remembers reading the post; it struck a nerve. \u201cWhen I saw that, I realized this never sort of ends, whether you\u2019re an established model or you\u2019re just trying to build your portfolio. Black artists can do makeup on anybody. Why can\u2019t that be the same for everyone?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MFMG can be used on the darkest skin tones, saving many women\u2014like Gbeleyi back in her modeling days\u2014from having to become at-home chemists with the little made available to them. At the same time, makeup artists can carry more than the bare minimum in their sets when there are companies dedicated to making products for skin tones all along the color spectrum. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2019, the company will look to expand by adding to its existing collections\u2014which currently include six lipstick colors, faux-lash sets, and single glitter pods, alongside the popular Glitter Palette\u2014to include an eyeshadow palette and lip liners to go with the brand\u2019s nude lipsticks.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is a phrase that surfaces when black women create, build, or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.essence.com\/magazine\/the-election-now-black-women-rising\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">vote<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in sizable numbers: \u201cI\u2019ll just do it myself.\u201d MFMG joins the ranks of brands such as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/imancosmetics.com\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iman Cosmetics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fentybeauty.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fenty Beauty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/omolewamakeup.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Omolewa Cosmetics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/marenabeaute.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mar\u00e9na Beaut\u00e9<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have done just that, in which black women saw a problem and decided to solve it themselves. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI&#8217;ve loved makeup since I was a little girl, and I\u2019ve always been a problem solver,\u201d says Gbeleyi, who now works alongside two employees in Toronto, and another who works remotely from Dallas. \u201cI looked at the industry and I was like, \u2018This is a problem.\u2019\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scrolling through its Instagram comments, it\u2019s clear that MFMG is giving people not only what they want, but what they need. The excitement is visible in the raised-hand emojis that fill every post\u2014makeup is nothing if not a divine experience.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Tomi
