But her means is unorthodox and, at first glance, counterintuitive: She helps students <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> start college right away. Her Atlanta-based company, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/theleapyear.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leap Year<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is retooling the gap year and transforming vulnerable students\u2019 post-high school path from tenuous to surefooted.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">College was particularly meaningful to Newton, Massachusetts-raised Scott\u2014her mother was the first in the family\u2019s history to attend. \u201cIn just one generation, education shifted the whole trajectory of our family,\u201d Scott says. \u201cFor us, it went from, \u2018Are you going to college?\u2019 to \u2018What college are you going to?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scott went to Smith College, majoring in neuroscience with ambitions of becoming a vet\u2014until a summer studying wildlife management in Kenya prompted her to change course. She was deeply affected by the challenges that climate change presented for the developing community she was living and working in. After returning to Smith for her senior year, she applied for <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.davisprojectsforpeace.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">100 Projects for Peace<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a national competition that awarded a $10,000 grant to a student with the winning peace-promoting initiative. Scott\u2019s proposal\u2014to build a common well between two tribes that were often in conflict because of water scarcity\u2014won, and on the day after graduation, she was on a plane back to Kenya to implement her strategy.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-31785\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/02\/Amber-Scott-LeapYear-1-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31785\"\/><figcaption>\u201cI knew I wanted to spend my career trying to build impact in our communities,\u201d says Leap Year&#8217;s Amber Scott.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI saw the impact, appreciation, and value that the well created,\u201d she says of the experience. By the time she landed back in the U.S., she says, \u201cI knew I wanted to spend my career trying to build impact in our communities.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Several years later, she had experience at a number of nonprofits (as well as an MBA from Ohio State University) under her belt. But pieces of an idea, partly honed through experience in the Atlanta public school system and educational consulting gigs, kept resurfacing in her mind. She knew which puzzle the pieces belonged to: \u201cHow can I bridge first-generation and low-income students&#8217; readiness for college academically and socially?\u201d But she had never quite been able to fit the fragments together. \u201cI finally had a back-of-the-envelope moment where I sat down and said, \u2018How do I really do this?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scott knew the stats\u2014only one in 10 first-generation college students were graduating\u2014and the contributing factors: systemic inequality and an inadequate support system. But one thing still perplexed her. \u201cIf we know that low-income and first-gen students are less prepared for college,\u201d she remembers thinking, \u201cthen why are we always saying, \u2018Go straight to college when you graduate?\u2019 What if we gave first-gen students the opportunity that a lot of wealthy students have: to take a gap year and go to college when they feel prepared?\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Determined to redefine the gap year, Scott built Leap Year\u2019s program: a 40-hour-a-week endeavor in which students participate in community service by tutoring elementary school students, complete college-readiness courses, and in some cases, take college classes and earn credits before enrolling in a full-time schedule. \u201cThat\u2019s a big deal because for our students, diving into a full semester of classes is really overwhelming. This way they get to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>be<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a college student, but they&#8217;re doing it as a group with the [Leap Year] community. When they start classes officially on their own, it&#8217;s not as scary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Scott, based at Atlanta\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/colony-square--atlanta--GA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork Colony Square<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, is also encouraged by America\u2019s changing perception of the gap year, partly brought about by the high-profile proponent: former first daughter Malia Obama, who deferred admission to Harvard for a year to work at the U.S. embassy in Spain and work in the entertainment industry. She started her freshman year in 2017. \u201cI was so excited when she did that,\u201d says Scott. \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Black-ish<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also did an episode taking on the idea of, \u2019Oh, [a gap year] is only something white people do.\u2019 No\u2014you can do a gap year, and it can be really beneficial as long as you\u2019re focused on your goals.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among Leap Year\u2019s many fans is one particularly close to Scott\u2014her mom. \u201cShe was the first investor!\u201d Scott laughs. \u201cI actually called her today to get her advice. She\u2019s really good at helping me think about how you don&#8217;t want to grow fast, you want to grow right.
