The gut, she says, is the body\u2019s first brain. It\u2019s why 98 percent of diseases start in your gut, and also why, after years of neglect while working as a late-night DJ, it was a visit to a gut specialist that kicked her health journey into high gear.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe idea that gut health is a huge part of your well-being is very true,\u201d Bronfman tells journalist, author, and former editor-in-chief of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.teenvogue.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Teen Vogue<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Elaine Welteroth at the debut event for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.weworknow.com\/\">WeWork Now<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, The We Company&#8217;s first no-membership-required workspace and retail concept, in New York City on Tuesday evening. \u201cIt\u2019s unfortunate because [bad gut health] comes after so many different signs, and we don\u2019t necessarily know how to read them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-31669 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/WeWork-Made-by-We-Hannah-Bronfman-and-Elaine-Welteroth-571x800.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31669\"\/><figcaption>(Top) Hannah Bronfman and Elaine Welteroth pose together after their discussion about redefining beauty and health. For the food lover, beauty-product addict, and exercise junkie, good health is a gift, but not a privilege, and we should all have the same access to wellness despite the health-care industry\u2019s diversity and accessibility limitations. It\u2019s a topic she discusses at length in her new book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harpercollins.com\/9780062790958\/do-what-feels-good\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do What Feels Good: Recipes, Remedies, and Routines to Treat Your Body Right<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bronfman admits it\u2019s a simple title, but it says a lot (and it\u2019s already resonating with her 511,000\u2014and counting\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/hannahbronfman\/?hl=en\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instagram followers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). \u201cIt\u2019s all about listening to your body and really figuring out, \u2018How does food make you feel? How does exercise make you feel? How do the conversations that you have with your loved ones make you feel? What are the toxic relationships that you have that are weighing you down?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-31672\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/WeWork-Made-by-We-Hannah-Bronfman-and-Elaine-Welteroth-3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31672\"\/><figcaption>\u201cLife doesn\u2019t need to be as difficult as we\u2019re making it if we just take a little bit more time for ourselves,&#8221; Hannah Bronfman tells Elaine Welteroth.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Answering those questions may be easier said than done, but Bronfman has no shortage of intuitive, easy practices to ensure that you, too, are treating your body right. Read on for the highlights.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Don\u2019t lose track of those things that make you feel good.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Growing up as a ballet dancer and later while participating in team sports, Bronfman became intrinsically connected to physical activity. But early on in her DJ career, she lost sight of that love of fitness, as well as some of her other physical needs\u2014like sleep. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-31673\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/WeWork-Made-by-We-Hannah-Bronfman-and-Elaine-Welteroth-4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31673\"\/><figcaption>\u201cI know so many women who don\u2019t give themselves enough time, and it hinders everything,\u201d says Hannah Bronfman, author of <em>Do What Feels Good<\/em>.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was burning the candle at both ends, and not in a good way,\u201d Bronfman remembers. \u201cIt was unsustainable. I knew it would be really detrimental if I didn\u2019t get it together.\u201d So she began playing earlier gigs that would allow her to do things like cook for herself and get to sleep on time. \u201cThat was the road that got me back on my path.\u201d &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Don\u2019t let your negative self-talk be stronger than your positive. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To offer another gut analogy: It\u2019s easy for bad bacteria to overwhelm good bacteria, and it\u2019s also easy to give way to negative thinking, even unknowingly. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bronfman presents the example of her grandmother, who passed away due to complications from a lifelong struggle with anorexia. \u201cI saw the way she treated herself, and it was a really toxic way of living,\u201d Bronfman says. In the ballet world, Bronfman herself had witnessed the ways in which negative body image can affect girls at a young age. \u201cThese are the types of things where, if you can\u2019t get a grip on in your life, they will stay with you forever,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Discover and nurture your superpower.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Bronfman\u2019s ballet dream came to a close when, after hitting puberty, she remembers acknowledging that she was \u201ctrying to conform\u201d to the body standards she saw across the dance world. She hated every bit of it. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She moved on, diving into team sports\u2014like soccer, track, and basketball\u2014and adopting the skill sets that those entailed on and off the field. During the interview, Welteroth proposes that this is Bronfman\u2019s \u201csuperpower\u201d: consistently breaking out of molds and claiming one\u2019s own space in the world, like venturing into wellness while also working as a DJ. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Don\u2019t let not-knowing stop you from trying. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doing what feels good in a literal sense may not always be what\u2019s best for you long-term. Take starting a business, with the possibility that it could fail. After Bronfman\u2019s first venture, a last-minute appointment-booking app called Beautified, did just that, she admits it was difficult to stand up again. But never did she regret trying it. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI had never imagined what being an entrepreneur looked like until I had an idea I was super-passionate about and started chipping away at making that become a reality,\u201d she says. Besides, what was she going to do besides reinvent herself? \u201cI had a failed business, but I had to keep going. You have to get up and pivot.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Practice what you preach. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even in the midst of a busy multistop book tour, Bronfman prioritizes self-care, like exercise and proper nutrition, and does so unapologetically. \u201cIt\u2019s a lot being \u2018on\u2019 all the time,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s important that I take care of myself so that I can also be present and be on my game for all of you.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Just give yourself 20 minutes. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the wellness world is under scrutiny, it\u2019s because the vast majority of entry points are neither attainable nor inclusive. Bronfman is not afraid to use her platform responsibly, and part of that is helping to redefine what wellness truly is. \u201cWellness is not about organic food or taking a boutique workout class,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s about the in-between moments. It\u2019s about how you treat yourself.\u201d To start doing what feels good, Bronfman suggests giving yourself 20 minutes to do just that. We can all find 20 minutes, right? <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cGive yourself 20 minutes at your lunch break, 20 minutes after work, 20 minutes before you go to bed,\u201d she says. \u201cWe all have space for that.
