He spent three years trying to get a meeting with Jonas Salk, the inventor of the polio vaccine.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI called many times, I sent many letters,\u201d Grazer told the audience of WeWork employees at a \u201cMake It Work\u201d panel discussion at the company\u2019s recent Global Summit in Los Angeles. (He\u2019s a fan of WeWork through his wife, marketing specialist Veronica Smiley Grazer, who has an office at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/312-arizona-ave--los-angeles--CA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork 312 Arizona Ave<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Santa Monica.) \u201cEventually he got a new assistant who said, \u2018I\u2019ll let you say hi and shake hands, but this is not a full meeting.\u2019 I had so much anticipatory anxiety that as I approached him, I projectile vomited on him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grazer is a relaxed and affable speaker, even as he recounts throwing up on a personal hero. It\u2019s a trait cultivated through years of face-to-face conversations with interesting and influential people, a pursuit he launched 35 years ago as a child who felt hamstrung by dyslexia. \u201cI realized I could learn much more from human interaction and human connectivity,\u201d he explains. \u201cBy looking at people and being present and genuinely interested in learning.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Projectile vomiting on Salk became just a funny anecdote in what turned out to be a decades-long friendship. Shortly after that first meeting, Salk offered to bring a handful of equally intellectual people to Grazer\u2019s home for a visit\u2014and suggested that the producer round up a few of his chums. (Grazer\u2019s guest list included the late Sydney Pollack, Steven Spielberg, and George Lucas.) \u201cWe were friends until his death,\u201d Grazer says of Salk.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-31625\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/WeWork-Global-Summit-Brian-Grazer-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31625\"\/><figcaption>\u201cIf I do anything just for me, I\u2019ve failed,\u201d says Brian Grazer. \u201cI think it\u2019s bad karma. It\u2019s as simple as that.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grazer\u2019s \u201ccuriosity conversations,\u201d as he calls these biweekly meetings with individuals who are \u201cexperts in anything other than entertainment,\u201d have introduced him to a wide variety of people\u2014including presidents, Princess Diana, Andy Warhol, and Fidel Castro. (He recounted his experiences in his 2016 best-seller, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Curious-Mind-Secret-Bigger-Life\/dp\/1476730776\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>A Curious Mind: The Secret to a Bigger Life<\/em><\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.) <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey can be in medicine, politics, religion, all art forms, gurus, cult leaders\u2014all types of people,\u201d says the 67-year-old producer of critical and commercial hits like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>A Beautiful Mind<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Apollo 13<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI don\u2019t have to agree with their philosophy or their point of view. I don\u2019t have to like them, or for them to like me. I\u2019m just out to try and learn something.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His passion for human connectivity has served his professional career as well: Over the years, he has gravitated towards film and TV projects that have themes of love and redemption at their core (which is why he doesn\u2019t do horror films, he explains\u2014lots of gore, no redemption). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI champion projects that have a theme, and where I can see the heartbeat,\u201d he says. \u201cThe heartbeat is everything to me.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those principles of connectivity will be laid out in Grazer\u2019s book, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Eye-Contact-Power-Personal-Connection\/dp\/1501147722\/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1548262540&amp;sr=1-1&amp;keywords=eye+contact+brian+grazer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Eye Contact<\/em><\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, out this fall. But he\u2019s doing more than just putting his own learning to paper. Among his recent initiatives: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imagine-impact.com\/\">Imagine Impact<\/a>, a fully funded eight-week bootcamp to help new creative talent find a home in Hollywood at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/pacific-design-center-red-building--los-angeles--CA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork Pacific Design Center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Los Angeles that launched with his partner\u2014director, producer, and actor Ron Howard\u2014last September.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI looked around at the landscape of the content space, and realized that it\u2019s not democratized at all. It\u2019s a caste system,\u201d he explains. \u201cAnd the caste system creates barriers that make it really hard for a writer with a new but original voice to get heard.\u201d The bootcamp, he says, \u201cwill allow for original and sustainable voices to be heard quicker than struggling for several years at the bottom rung of a ladder.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Grazer says he\u2019s learned over the years that while making it in Hollywood may look like the ultimate goal, true success encompasses bringing people along for the ride.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I do anything just for me, I\u2019ve failed,\u201d he says. \u201cI think it\u2019s bad karma.
