Hire people smarter than herself"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because she is the name and face of the operation, it\u2019s easy to assume that Issa Rae alone is responsible for parlaying her web series, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/awkwardblackgirl.com\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Awkward Black Girl<\/em><\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, into a thriving business that includes producing her hit HBO show, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hbo.com\/insecure\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Insecure<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and other endeavors. But she would be the first to dispel such misconceptions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI like to hire people who have a specific lane, who do something very well,\u201d Rae told WeWork employees from around the world as part of the \u201cTeam Awesome\u201d track at the company\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator-awards\/believe-in-yourself-enough-to-take-a-step-and-other-advice-from-weworks-global-summit\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Global Summit<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Los Angeles in early January. \u201cI hire a lot of people who are smarter than me. If I\u2019m the smartest person in my company, then my company will go nowhere.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-31586 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/WeWork-Global-Summit-Benoni-Tagoe-Deniese-Davis-and-Issa-Rae-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31586\"\/><figcaption>(Left to right) Benoni Tagoe, Deniese Davis, and Issa Rae talk about how they work together to fund passion projects at WeWork&#8217;s Global Summit.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two of those people\u2014Benoni Tagoe, business-development director of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.issarae.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Issa Rae Productions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Deniese Davis, her co-founder at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/colorcreative.tv\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ColorCreative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which shepherds underserved voices in Hollywood\u2014joined her on the panel. They spoke both about how they work together to fund passion projects that will also elevate their brand and how they find other team members who may not always be the obvious choices.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSometimes you may not have the skill set; sometimes you may not have the talent,\u201d says Tagoe, a friend-of-a-friend Rae hired when he explained to her all the ways she was missing out on monetizing her business. He says the important thing is to \u201calways have the curiosity\u201d because \u201cwith curiosity, as long as you\u2019re trying and figuring things out, you\u2019re allowed to make mistakes.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because these executives came up through nontraditional means, Davis stresses to her coworkers the old adages that there are no bad ideas and you shouldn\u2019t be afraid to speak up. Even when budgeting or scheduling won\u2019t allow them to implement an idea right away, she says, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We love to come up with ideas to attain and aspire and achieve, even if it\u2019s going to be three or four years down the line.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rae admits that she\u2019s sometimes had doubts about pitches, but when others persuaded her to have the patience to wait it out, \u201cI found out, pleasantly, that I was wrong, and I\u2019m glad I didn\u2019t say no.\u201d She also keeps a file of the projects that didn\u2019t pan out, which keeps their egos in check and reminds them that there\u2019s more work to do. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI don\u2019t necessarily believe in failure; I just believe in the opportunity to learn and grow.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Davis and her team never stop learning\u2014and because of that, she says, \u201cwe\u2019ve gotten really good at identifying the priorities that need to take place\u201d even if they require extra meetings and work to make their time efficient.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes this is easier said than done. Tagoe says that even though he may be the type of person who is always looking for the next big idea, \u201cin a team setting, you can\u2019t get everyone to move at the same time. You have to approach people individually.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Rae acknowledges that there can be extra pressure on people of color to always \u201chave your best feet forward,\u201d she firmly believes that \u201cwithin your company and within your team members and the people you\u2019re working with,\u201d it\u2019s OK to sometimes bring your B-game.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe world is watching,\u201d agrees Tagoe. But, he says, every year has built on the last. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI think we\u2019re excited about 2019 because all our ideas are coming together.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Much of this is due to employee retention, he says.
