{"id":31548,"date":"2019-01-22T09:34:23","date_gmt":"2019-01-22T14:34:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator\/?p=31548"},"modified":"2020-04-17T16:14:39","modified_gmt":"2020-04-17T20:14:39","slug":"how-one-entrepreneur-casts-a-glow-on-an-oscar-nominated-film","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/how-one-entrepreneur-casts-a-glow-on-an-oscar-nominated-film","title":{"rendered":"How one entrepreneur casts a glow on an Oscar-nominated film"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the producers of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>If Beale Street Could Talk<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wanted to help promote the <a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2019\/film\/news\/oscar-nominations-2019-list-1203112405\/\">Oscar-nominated<\/a> and<\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.essence.com\/awards-events\/red-carpet\/golden-globes\/regina-king-vow-50-women-golden-globes\/\">&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Golden Globe-winning film<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> set in Harlem, they reached out to Teri Johnson, founder of<\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.harlemcandlecompany.com\/products\/love-inspired-by-james-baldwin-luxury-candle-large-12-oz\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harlem Candle Company<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Annapurna Pictures wanted a scent that could evoke the movie\u2019s exact time and place. And Johnson, who knows the history of Harlem and renowned residents like performer Josephine Baker and musician Duke Ellington, was the right person for the job.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson began researching James Baldwin, the author of the 1974 novel that inspired the film. She discovered that at the time he wrote it, Baldwin was living in the south of France. Journalists who visited him there often wrote about his love for his garden.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOf course, any good writer is going to tell you how it smells,\u201d says Johnson, a member at New York City&#8217;s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/8-w-126th-st--new-york-city--NY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork 8 W 126th St<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cSo I found stories about the fragrances in his garden\u2014orange blossom, wild lavender, and rosemary.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All of which inspired her candle \u201cLove,\u201d which she says <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">evokes Baldwin\u2019s home in the village of St-Paul-de-Vence. Ranging from $14 to $60, the candles are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harlemcandlecompany.com\/products\/love-inspired-by-james-baldwin-luxury-candle-large-12-oz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">available on her website<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI\u2019ve been obsessed with beautiful scents my entire life,\u201d says Johnson. \u201cI\u2019ve been very inspired by places I\u2019ve been and things I\u2019ve smelled and tasted.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson began selling her candles in 2015, making them in the kitchen of her apartment in Harlem. Although she now has help making them, she remains hands-on, especially during peak periods. \u201cDo I still pour and package when I need to? Sure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since she started her company, Johnson has sold more than 20,000 candles inspired by the New York City neighborhood.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/wework-harlem-candle-company-1-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31567\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first step, says Johnson, is always research into Harlem\u2019s history. For her \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.harlemcandlecompany.com\/collections\/entire-collection\/products\/langston-luxury-candle-large-12-oz\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Langston<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d candle inspired by writer Langston Hughes, an avid smoker, she wanted \u201csomething with tobacco notes.\u201d Then she discovered that he had twice lived in Mexico, where he frequented small, dusky churches.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHe became a little obsessed with the incense burning in these churches,\u201d says Johnson. \u201cSo I said, \u2018Oh, I want incense notes in the candle.&#8217;\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson works with perfumers to come up with just the right scent. The entire process, she says, can take close to a year.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/wework-harlem-candle-company-2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31568\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson uses soy wax for her candles, which she buys in 50-pound boxes. After weighing the wax chips, she liquefies them on the stove.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/wework-harlem-candle-company-3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31569\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson lets the wax cool. She knows it\u2019s ready, she says, by just by touching the pot. At this point, she can pour the fragrance oil.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/wework-harlem-candle-company-4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31570\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johnson stirs the oil into the wax for a solid minute and lets it sit until it\u2019s ready to be poured\u2014another temperature she knows by touch.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/wework-harlem-candle-company-5-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31571\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She places pre-tabbed wicks into candleholders and adheres the tab to the glass or metal, keeping the wick centered.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/wework-harlem-candle-company-6-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31572\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After she pours the candles, Johnson sets them aside to harden. Afterward, she trims the wick to size.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/wework-harlem-candle-company-7-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31573\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When they are ready to ship, Johnson affixes the label. The logo above the company name is a flame, but if you look closely another image appears.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s actually a person holding their arms up, representing unity, community, and love,\u201d says Johnson. \u201cWe wanted to embrace the past and the present, to celebrate old-school Harlem that is still here, to keep that
