For his part, Hightower\u2014shaved head, microphone in hand, and clad in a black Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Detective Society T-shirt\u2014couldn\u2019t have looked more pleased by the chaos. Both he and the crowd were there for one reason: trivia. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf you don\u2019t have a drink in your hand, for God\u2019s sake, get one!\u201d he yelled into the microphone, as One Star bar\u2019s flat screens played college football and \u201990s alt-rock blared in the background. Then, as he has done at least 2,500 times, Hightower launched into a series of trivia questions\u2014and the pens of a dozen teams began flying across paper. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hightower is the founder and CEO of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trivianyc.net\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trivia NYC<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which has taken the casual quiz night and turned it into an enterprise. The company, which has 40 employees and works out o<\/span>f New York City&#8217;s<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/27-01-queens-plaza-n--new-york-city--NY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork 27-01 Queens Plaza N<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, hosts hundreds of trivia nights each week, a range of corporate gigs and bar clients like this one. Attendees range from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Jeopardy!<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> champions and geek celebrities (Gilbert Gottfried is a One Star regular) to tourists and locals who happen to wander into a competition. Hightower leaves most of the hosting to his team\u2014he\u2019s too busy figuring out how to run a business he basically invented\u2014but he still hosts on Saturdays, a way to keep his hand in the core of what makes his business work. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone wp-image-31321 size-full\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/01\/WeWork-Tony-Hightower-Trivia-NYC-2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-31321\"\/><figcaption>Trivia NYC founder Tony Hightower jokes with the crowd at One Star.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The road to Q&amp;A glory was accidental but perhaps inevitable for Hightower. In the 1990s, he was living in Toronto, singing in a band. Looking for its next big move, the band relocated to New York\u2014and then broke up. Hightower took whatever odd jobs he could find. (\u201cI was largely a temp\u2014office jobs, pharmaceutical, legal, whatever I could convince the agencies I was qualified for. I did spend a year as an assistant to David Bowie, which was cool.\u201d) Then in 2006, friends recommended he host a trivia night at Dempsey\u2019s Pub in the East Village. Hightower had two things going for himself: As an avid reader, he had lots of trivia knowledge, and his experience fronting a band prepared him for the crowds: \u201cI was loud and could handle being heckled by drunk people,\u201d he says. The <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.trivianyc.net\/live\/quiz-wednesdays-slainte\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Drunken Smartass Olympics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Trivia NYC\u2019s longest-running event, was born. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hightower was such a success, requests began to pour in from other bars and for corporate gigs. At the same time, he was achieving quiz glory on the television circuit. In 2008, he snagged $1,400 on the game show <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Cash Cab<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In 2011 he appeared on two episodes of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Jeopardy!<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, winning $23,600. And in 2015 he walked away from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Who Wants to Be a Millionaire<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with $250,000. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hightower\u2019s trivia reputation was growing, and he began to recruit and train staff to take on the new flow of inquiries. Based on his vast experience, he knew exactly what to look for. \u201cThere\u2019s almost no limit to how competitive otherwise mild-mannered people can get,\u201d Hightower says. \u201cIf that\u2019s not a thing you learn how to deal with, then you can\u2019t be in this business very long.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The typical trivia player is extremely driven, he says. \u201cWe\u2019re not giving away real estate at these things. We give away books or a round of drinks or something. People have jobs and could <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>buy<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> these things. But they will fight so hard for it, it\u2019s amazing. It\u2019s like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Lord of the Flies<\/em> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or something. They just go nuts, and once you figure out how to keep the energy moving, it\u2019s oddly intense.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the cutthroat side of live quizzing, Hightower sees it as a force for good. He appreciates that it provides an analog way for people to interact who may not otherwise, or learn things about each other that they wouldn\u2019t have if they weren\u2019t trying to compare brains and solve a quiz. \u201cYou\u2019re learning something about other people,\u201d he says, \u201cand hopefully yourself.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there\u2019s the ego boost. \u201cYou get to show off what you know in front of other people,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you\u2019re the only one who knows the first movie to win the best picture Oscar, there\u2019s a rush of superiority that you\u2019ve earned. May not mean anything in term of your retirement plans\u2014but for 15 seconds you think you\u2019re awesome. A little of that is important.\u201d (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Wings<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in 1929, by the way.) <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such was the case with Teresa Candori and Brett Cott, a married couple playing on a team together at One Star on that wet winter night. The couple soared through the first two of five rounds at Hightower\u2019s trivia night with a near-perfect score but were nervous heading into the third round of music questions. \u201cWe can get crushed on the music stuff,\u201d Candori said as a song played overhead for a question. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIs that Lionel Richie?\u201d Candori asked. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNo, it\u2019s Kenny Rogers!\u201d Cott replied. (It was.) They quietly jotted the name down, hoping to best a pack of schoolteachers sitting in the corner who often finish first. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As these rivalries played out, Hightower kept calling out his questions. There was more trivia to come. \u201cI thought I was competitive, but I\u2019m nothing compare to this,\u201d says Hightower. \u201cPeople let their inhibitions go, and it\u2019s delightful.\u201d
