Next time someone asks Zeijlon to resend information via email, she\u2019ll resist the urge to reply testily, \u201cper below, here it is again.\u201d \u201cIt\u2019s kinder to simply say, \u2018here you go,\u2019\u201d she says. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Microstep:&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make mindful communication a habit by <\/span><b><strong>pausing to reflect before giving feedback<\/strong>. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re stressed or rushed, you\u2019re more likely to deliver feedback without compassion or empathy, even unintentionally. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><b>The goal: Make more money.&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be specific, says WeWork member Lauren Berger, founder and CEO of <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.internqueen.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Intern Queen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the author of <\/span><a style=\"color: #000000;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Get-Together-Ditch-Design-Success\/dp\/1260142957\/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1544816410&amp;sr=8-2&amp;keywords=get+it+together+lauren+berger\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Get it Together: Ditch the Chaos, Do the Work, and Design Your Success<\/em><\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cFind that happy point between a stretch and a struggle,\u201d she suggests. When you determine that sweet-spot figure, divide it into a biweekly amount, she says, \u201cthen work backward to break it down into attainable steps.\u201d Setting an intention to make three sales calls a day will get you further than declaring, \u201cI\u2019m going to pull in $1 million this year.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Microstep:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Help boost the bottom line by <\/span><b>turning a digital exchange into an in-person conversation. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you get to know professional contacts as people instead of as just names in your inbox, you\u2019ll build trust and camaraderie, developing relationships that can lead to business now and down the road. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The goal: Regain control of your schedule.&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With emails coming in 24\/7, coworkers sticking two-hour meetings on your calendar, and the incessant lure of social media, it can feel like your time is not your own. Even James Clear feels this pain. His 2019 goal: \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;m working on saying \u2018no\u2019 and trying to regain control of my calendar,\u201d he says. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Microstep: <\/b><b>Try taking a daily \u201ctech timeout\u201d to improve your focus and reduce stress. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Step away from social media and email so you can truly connect with yourself and your loved ones. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clear has admitted to keeping his phone in another room while writing and swearing off social media during the workweek by asking his assistant to change his passwords every Monday\u2014and hold the new ones until Friday. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The goal: Make more free time. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIn 2019 I\u2019d like to work smarter,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.erincole.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Erin Cole<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, designer and founder of an eponymous couture bridal line. \u201cI tend to tackle it all on my own, even when the people I\u2019ve hired can do those things very well.\u201d Delegating will give Cole more time for meaningful activities. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Microstep:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Type-A habits are hard to break, so ease into it. <\/span><b>Identify one low-priority activity\u2014and stop doing it. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sure, the jumble of mugs in the office kitchen is unsightly, but is organizing it daily the best use of your time?<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll find time you didn\u2019t know you had, which will allow you to <\/span><b>do one small thing each morning that brings you joy. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It might be meditating, walking, or making breakfast. From this foundation, you\u2019ll be more focused and productive once you get to work.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The goal: Be more intentional about your career trajectory.&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Job-search strategist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jobjenny.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jenny Foss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sees too many clients who \u201cended up\u201d in a career they never wanted. Dodge that outcome by intentionally curating your career. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cChanging that mind-set of \u2018let\u2019s see where life takes me\u2019 can prevent that feeling of \u2018how did I get here?\u2019 in 10 years,\u201d she says. Contemplating a career pivot? Consider what will get you there. \u201cTake an online learning class, seek mentorship, or do some self-teaching,\u201d says Foss. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Microstep:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Give yourself the headspace to plot your path. <\/span><b>Set aside a few minutes each night to write in a journal. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writing by hand is a great way to<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">collect your thoughts without digital distractions. Your writing can be both emotional and practical. Write about the goals you feel most passionately about, and jot down the steps you are taking to get there. \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Define what will work for you, then explore how to achieve it,\u201d says Foss.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The goal: Filter advice from others. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most advice is delivered with good intentions\u2014but it\u2019s not always useful. Susan Swimmer, founder and creative director of jewelry line <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eviemarques.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evie Marques<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, vows to learn the difference in 2019. \u201cEveryone has something to say about what I <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>should<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> be doing,\u201d she says. \u201cI have to learn to filter what comes at me based on what my gut tells me will work for my business.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Microstep: Once a day, have a conversation where you mostly listen. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of giving your opinion or changing the subject, invite the other person to go deeper. Don\u2019t underestimate the power of silence. Whether or not you agree with what they say, let it sink in before responding. Swimmer\u2019s plan: \u201cI\u2019ll take notes on my phone and read them later,\u201d rather than react in the moment. \u201cI can always ask the advice-giver to elaborate if needed,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The goal: Approach the business with fresh eyes.&nbsp;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last year, fashion designer Cole upended her company\u2019s operations process. \u201cNormally my gown and accessory departments work separately,\u201d the designer explains. \u201cInstead, I had everyone work together, pairing each dress with accessories made for it.\u201d Here\u2019s why it worked: \u201cEvery big goal is made up of smaller goals\u2014and each should be realistic and measurable,\u201d Dan Schwabel, author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Back-Human-Leaders-Connection-Isolation\/dp\/0738235032\/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1544820183&amp;sr=8-1&amp;keywords=dan+schwabel\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Back to Human: How Great Leaders Create Connection in the Age of Isolation<\/em><\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, tells Thrive and WeWork. Cole\u2019s smaller goals were to align two departments, have them collaborate, and produce designs that clients love\u2014an outcome measurable in sales.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>The Microstep:<\/b> <b>Start each of your meetings by telling everyone what the goal is. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your goal is to look critically at a particular operations process and spur ideas for how to rethink or improve it, clearly state the meeting\u2019s purpose\u2014it brings people together around a shared goal. You could also spur creativity by<\/span> <b>making at least one meeting each day device-free. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With fewer distractions, you\u2019ll all be more focused, engaged,
