\u201cYes, this is a fish-leather skirt!\u201d actress and activist Alysia Reiner proclaimed, gesturing at her \u201990s-inspired black miniskirt as she stood in front of 150 people gathered at New York City’s\u00a0WeWork 1460 Broadway<\/a> for the recent launch party of her Livari<\/a> collaboration collection. \u201cIt\u2019s from Brazil, from fish that\u2019s been eaten,\u201d she told the crowd. \u201c[The skin] would have been thrown away\u2014but no, [we said] let\u2019s make cool products out of it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This sustainable ethos permeates every design from Livari, the ethical, zero-waste fashion label Reiner cofounded with stylist Claudine DeSola and designer and Women\u2019s March organizer Tabitha St. Bernard-Jacobs. Their new collection showcases style and sustainability with every piece: <\/span>ballet flats<\/span><\/a> created in collaboration with <\/span>Oka-B<\/span><\/a> ($60) are made with Microplast, a recycled tmaterial; limited-edition <\/span>fabric sleeves<\/span><\/a> for sustainable glass straws designed in partnership with <\/span>Simply Straws<\/span><\/a> (from $20); a <\/span>leather clutch<\/span><\/a> made with <\/span>Elvis & Kresse<\/span><\/a> (\u00a3160) is crafted of leather scraps discarded by Burberry, reclaimed blankets made from material used in the printing industry; and hot orange parachute panels from discarded (actual) parachutes. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cFashion is wearable art,\u201d says Reiner, who works out of <\/span>WeWork 8 W 126th St<\/span><\/a>\u00a0in New York. The actress, best known for her roles in <\/span>Orange Is the New Black<\/em>, The Deuce<\/em><\/span><\/i>,<\/span> and <\/span>Better Things<\/em><\/span><\/i>, developed an appreciation for fashion early in life. \u201cMy grandmother was a huge lover of clothing and would buy clothing from all over,\u201d such as a piece of embroidery from Istanbul, Reiner recalls. \u201cShe really taught me about workmanship.\u201d Her grandmother used to take her to the <\/span>Piggy Bank Shop<\/span><\/a>, a second-hand store in Westchester County, NY. \u201cI learned about reusing and not having to buy <\/span>new<\/em> <\/span><\/i>to find incredible things,\u201d says Reiner.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, as a stage\/TV\/film actress, she gets to work with top costume designers, like <\/span>OITNB<\/em><\/span><\/i> and <\/span>Girls<\/em><\/span><\/i> costumer Jenn Rogen. \u201c[She] taught me how a character can be informed by a costume,\u201d says Reiner. \u201cOnce she put me in stripes, saying, \u2018You are like a ref in this scene.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reiner\u2019s passion for style and artistry brought her together with longtime friend DeSola\u2014a stylist on <\/span>OITNB<\/em><\/span><\/i>, <\/span>House of Cards<\/em><\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Jane the Virgin<\/em><\/span><\/i>, <\/span>Younger<\/em><\/span><\/i>, and other shows\u2014and St. Bernard-Jacobs shortly after the 2016 election. What began with a focus group of women talking about their favorite pieces of clothing evolved into their first Livari collection, a mixture of everyday and statement pieces with a practical twist (think pockets and adjustable waists).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When press coverage and reviews exceeded their expectations, the three cofounders\u2014each balancing their respective first careers with their new venture\u2014were faced with a serious question: \u201cHow do we sustain this idea?\u201d After all, Reiner\u2019s acting career shows no signs of slowing down; her next feature film, the comedy <\/span>Egg<\/em><\/span><\/i>, is due out in theaters and video on demand on Ja<\/span>nuary 18.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The women soon found their answer: \u201cWe decided to do collaborations,\u201d Reiner explains. With the added goal of incorporating a nonprofit component into every piece, the trio set out to find partners\u2014and causes. The Oka-B-collaboration ballet flats give back to <\/span>Still She Rises<\/span><\/a>, which benefits incarcerated mothers (Reiner is on the board); the Livari-designed glass-straw sleeves benefit oceans organization <\/span>Lonely Whale<\/span><\/a>; and the leather clutch designed with Elvis & Kresse benefits <\/span>Barefoot College<\/span><\/a>, which specializes in training female solar engineers. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It all adds up to a brand that embodies so much of what Reiner believes in personally. \u201cI think Alysia is very thoughtful about her platform, and she uses it to highlight clean living and speak about us having an impact in the world around us,\u201d says St. Bernard-Jacobs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their recent pivot into collaborations has allowed the three women flexibility in more ways than one. They can tap categories such as lifestyle, jewelry, and activewear\u2014and, through strategic partnerships with nonprofits, expand their mission. \u201cOur goal is to be wherever people need us,\u201d says Reiner, \u201cto support charities and to be at the frontline of design\u2014fearless and at the cutting edge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n
