Those are all crucial skills to serve and protect\u2014but also excellent traits for people who want to start their own businesses. And that\u2019s exactly how women are channeling their military prowess once they re-enter civilian life. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take Lindsey Church, a member at Seattle\u2019s WeWork <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/500-yale-ave-n--seattle--WA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">500 Yale Ave. N<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. and former Navy linguist. She founded <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/minorityvets.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minority Veterans of America<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which serves underrepresented veterans across the country. \u201cAs a female veteran, I almost never saw female veterans,\u201d she says. \u201cAs a gender-nonconforming veteran, I felt like the only one in the room. And I realized, within the veteran community, I saw no people of color, no religious minorities. But I got so sick of complaining about it; I just wanted to do something about it.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30891\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/Lindsey-Church-Minority-Veterans-of-America-800x571.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30891\"\/><figcaption>&#8220;We\u2019ve been here all along but we\u2019re starting to be welcomed to the table,\u201d says Lindsey Church of Minority Veterans of America.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At WeWork, nearly 30 percent of the national <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/veterans-in-residence\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterans in Residence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> program\u2014a partnership with Bunker Labs, a nonprofit that helps veterans start their own businesses\u2014are female entrepreneurs, almost double the number of women recruits in the military (women represent about 16 percent of the armed forces). <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while veterans are 45 percent more likely to be self-employed than non-veterans regardless of gender, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sba.gov\/content\/facts-veterans-and-entrepreneurship\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the U.S. Small Business Association, business is especially booming for women: Between 2007 and 2012, according to preliminary data from the Survey of Business Owners, the number of businesses owned by female veterans <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nwbc.gov\/content\/women-numbers-100000-veteran-women-owned-businesses\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more than tripled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, to 384,574 businesses from 130,000\u2014more than any other population segment. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"redefining-what-it-means-to-be-a-veteran\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Redefining what it means to be a veteran<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Church\u2019s organization has grown to 600 members and 4,000-plus <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/minorityvets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facebook followers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a year, with representatives in Seattle (Church\u2019s home base); Portland, OR; Los Angeles; Chicago; Colorado Springs; Washington, D.C.; and elsewhere. They\u2019re working to give all minority veterans a voice, create an inclusive community, and eliminate the stereotype of what a veteran looks like. That transition, thanks to entrepreneurs like Church, is already starting to happen. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cFor a long time, the narrative has been that veterans are straight, white, Christian men,\u201d she says. \u201cBut as more women join the military\u2014and more become vets\u2014there\u2019s more recognition happening for female veterans. We\u2019ve been here all along but we\u2019re starting to be welcomed to the table, which is changing what we\u2019re capable of doing.\u201d &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And they\u2019re certainly capable. Thirty-three percent of veteran entrepreneurs report having gained skills from active-duty service that are relevant to business ownership, including leadership, teamwork, project management, and focus, according to data from the Veterans in Residence program. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30892\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/Shelly-Rood-Missilia-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30892\"\/><figcaption>\u201cI\u2019ve had multiple corporate experiences and management jobs where I was often underutilized in order to fit the job description,\u201d says Shelly Rood of Missilia.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs a military veteran, I\u2019m highly capable in so many ways\u2014but I\u2019ve had multiple corporate experiences and management jobs where I was often underutilized in order to fit the job description,\u201d says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.shellyrood.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shelly Rood<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a former Army all-source tactical-intelligence officer. A member at Detroit\u2019s WeWork Campus Martius in Detroit, she created <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missilia.us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Missilia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a community for \u201cwomen who kick butt.\u201d She\u2019s not alone\u2014only 37 percent of female respondents to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.missioncontinues.org\/uploads\/Her-Mission-Continues.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by veteran nonprofit The Mission Continues said they feel \u201crecognized, respected, and valued as veterans in civilian life.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rood\u2019s organization is all about recognizing the value of strong women. Her professional speaking engagements attracted female veterans, firefighters, police, and business owners. \u201cThey were looking for a community of like-minded women, so that\u2019s what I decided to create,\u201d she says. Missilia celebrates the stories of extraordinary women in part with a $30 monthly subscription box that contains natural beauty products, healthy snacks, and a \u201ctactical piece\u201d like pepper spray, a pocket knife, or a pen that doubles as a self-defense tool. \u201cThe box was created to help reinforce what it means to be a strong woman <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>and<\/em> <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take care of yourself month after month,\u201d says Rood.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"breaking-new-ground-in-the-civilian-world\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>Breaking new ground in the civilian world<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s another reason female veterans are turning to entrepreneurship: There aren\u2019t jobs available\u2014or, rather, there aren\u2019t jobs that they want. The overall female-veteran-unemployment rate increased to 3 percent in October 2018 from 2.1 percent from October 2017, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bls.gov\/news.release\/empsit.t05.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to the U.S. Department of Labor, while the unemployment rate for male veterans did not change significantly. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Moreover, the Veterans in Residence program found that only 33 percent of members had a clear sense of what they wanted to do professionally after their military careers. For <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dajonferrell.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dajon Ferrell<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a member at Minneapolis\u2019s WeWork Capella Tower who previously worked in the Army\u2019s division of public affairs and marketing, it was about creating a job that ignited the same kind of passion as her military service. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30893\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/11\/Dajon-Ferrell-Mindful-Warriors-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30893\"\/><figcaption>\u201cWhen you get out of the military, it&#8217;s hard to just go into a daily-grind mode,\u201d says Dajon Ferrell of the Mindful Warriors podcast. \u201cYou really seek that challenge and a way to still be of service.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI thought the military was going to be a career for me,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen I got out and looked at what people my age were doing\u2014that 9-to-5 life\u2014I thought, \u2018OK, so I&#8217;m going to make X amount, not really feel like I have much control over my time, and not really feel like I have a purpose? No, thanks, I\u2019ll do it on my own.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ferrell branded herself as the Mindful Veteran, an empowerment coach working with veterans or civilians who have PTSD, anxiety, depression, or who have experienced sexual trauma. On her <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dajonferrell.com\/podcast\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Mindful Warriors<\/em> podcast<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, she aims to bridge the gap between civilians and the military by featuring resources, organizations, and opportunities. \u201cWhen you get out of the military, it&#8217;s hard to just go into a daily-grind mode,\u201d she says. \u201cYou really seek that challenge and a way to still be of service.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"the-armed-forces-as-business-school-101\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b>The armed forces as business school 101<\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Veterans are uniquely positioned to share their expertise in service because the military provides an intense environment for learning skills they don\u2019t teach you in business school, from compassion and tenacity to resilience and problem-solving under life-or-death conditions. And it\u2019s that dedication and perseverance that makes female vets successful entrepreneurs. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI almost died in the military, and I fought tooth and nail to come out of that place,\u201d says Church. \u201cYou want to tell me no? Bring it on. I\u2019ve dealt with worse.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The high-stakes nature of military jobs also makes entrepreneurial risks less scary than they might be for civilians. \u201cIn the military, you\u2019re entrusted with high-risk, high-stakes situations and told, \u2018Figure it out,\u2019\u201d says Rood. \u201cAnd they won&#8217;t accept excuses. You have to think outside the box.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And that\u2019s what Ferrell wanted to do after leaving the military as well. \u201cYou come to the civilian world and you just naturally have the ability to go out and make [stuff] happen,\u201d she says. That\u2019s what sets female-veteran entrepreneurs apart. \u201cThe female veterans that I\u2019ve met all have this common understanding that nobody else is going to do it, and we\u2019re all ready to step up,\u201d Church says. \u201cWomen are ready to rise to the challenge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Female veterans are channeling the unique skills they
