Don\u2019t forget to breathe"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Your child\u2019s daycare is closing. Your car needs a new carburetor. Your elderly father is suffering from a terminal illness. Your home improvement project has morphed into a money pit. The relentless news cycle makes you want to pull the covers over your head and stay there until Saturday. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet even as these types of ongoing stresses are occurring in your life, you must still go to work and try to perform at your best. While pulling that off isn\u2019t easy, it is possible. Those who work in the mental health field say there are tools that help a person stay productive at work even when their personal life threatens to dominate their thoughts. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A main component, they say, is being honest with yourself and others about the stresses and your personal needs. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAnxiety and stress levels are at an all-time high,\u201d says Poppy Jamie, the 28-year-old founder of<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the meditation app<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/happynotperfect.com\/the-app\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happy Not Perfect<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe all understand what it\u2019s like to feel overwhelmed.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamie, a member of the board of advisors for UCLA\u2019s Resnick Neuropsychiatric Hospital, says that if those stresses are personal ones, they can spill over into work performance if time isn\u2019t taken to acknowledge and process them. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen you suppress emotions, you activate the emotional center of your brain,\u201d Jamie says. It\u2019s the opposite of what many are hoping for at work, where maintaining a calm and rational demeanor is often helpful to make the best decisions.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Earlier this year, Jamie\u2019s app debuted a five-minute exercise called Refresh that uses science-backed steps to help you approach your day in a more centered way. The app asks how you are feeling, with choices ranging from \u201csad,\u201d \u201cheartbroken,\u201d and \u201canxious\u201d to \u201cexcited\u201d and even \u201cmagical.\u201d The program then moves through a breathing exercise, noting when you should inhale and exhale. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.who.int\/mental_health\/world-mental-health-day\/en\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Mental Health Day<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a day dedicated to raising awareness of mental health issues and mobilizing efforts in support of better mental health, Jamie led a breathing exercise at London\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/l\/camden--north-london--london\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork 138 Holborn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She discussed how people aren\u2019t stuck with the way their mind works\u2014it\u2019s possible to be less stressed if you retrain yourself to handle it better.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Jamie\u2019s approach is about more than breathing. On her app you can vent by typing in what\u2019s on your mind and then \u201cburn\u201d the whole screen in a symbolic manner to let go of negative thoughts. You are prompted to list things you are grateful for, doodle on the screen, or pass along a compliment to a friend. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In times of high stress, Jamie says, it\u2019s paramount to identify what will help you relax. This \u201cradical self care,\u201d as she calls it, includes basics like proper sleep and hydration, but also requires that you consider things that specifically calm you down and then commit to doing whatever that might be. It can be as simple as drinking more hot tea or leaving a few minutes early to make a yoga class. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen we are struggling, we forget what we need to feel better,\u201d Jamie says.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If something beyond the simple stresses of daily life is weighing you down, Jamie says you should not hesitate to seek professional help or take some time off. If you have personal days, it\u2019s wise to take advantage of them. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAllowing yourself to recover is really important,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd being able to then, when you\u2019re recovered, go back to work [at] full steam. You wouldn\u2019t keep training on a sprained ankle\u2014you\u2019d take a couple of days off to make it rest.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Naomi Hirabayashi and Marah Lidey, co-founders of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/advice.shinetext.com\/articles\/17-of-shine-hqs-all-time-favorite-shine-texts\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shine<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, send an inspirational text daily to their two million community members across the globe. They advise that when stress becomes something that impacts your work, it needs to be brought up to a supervisor. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cA good rule of thumb is if you feel your struggles are impacting your ability to get the job done, flagging that to your boss will hopefully get you the proactive support you need,\u201d says the 35-year-old Hirabayashi, who works from Brooklyn\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/dumbo-heights--new-york-city--NY\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork Dumbo Heights<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWhat we always find helpful in that scenario: Come with a few ideas or solutions for how they can best support you, not just the problem, for the most productive conversation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jack Jones, founder of Australia\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thebanksiaproject.org.au\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Banksia Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which works with men to develop practices to implement positive mental health strategies, says putting in the time to build a positive office environment will pay off when stress threatens to impact work performance. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWhen outside stressors are significant, we have to put on a facade as to how we really feel when we get to work,\u201d says Jones, who is based at Sydney\u2019s<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/333-george-st--sydney--NSW\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork 333 George Street<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cWe therefore spend the majority of our day pretending we are okay, when at times, we aren\u2019t. It is extremely important to create relationships with people in your workplace that allow you to be honest, open, and vulnerable.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That means sharing struggles with colleagues and doing the same for them. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to feel comfortable to talk to our colleagues about life\u2019s challenges and know that they will also be willing to show vulnerability towards us in return,\u201d says Jones, 25. \u201cIn order to safely do this, people need to be willing to listen honestly and openly after they ask a question like \u2018How are you?\u2019 or \u2018Are you okay?\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking time during the day to enjoy the simple pleasures can also improve your mood and lower stress. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe need to slow down and stop to enjoy the first sip of our coffee,\u201d says Jones. \u201cEnjoy the beauty of someone deciding to wear a bright scarf on a rainy, miserable day.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jamie agrees with Jones that being positive affects everyone around you. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cLooking after your mental well-being is a priority not only because it\u2019s beneficial to yourself, it\u2019s also hugely beneficial to the business environment,\u201d she says.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On World Mental Health Day, we asked a few professionals how to deal with stress at work<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1689,"featured_media":35006,"comment_status":"closed","ping_status":"closed","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_acf_changed":false,"_jetpack_memberships_contains_paid_content":false,"footnotes":""},"categories":[43902],"tags":[525],"class_list":["post-30777","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-professional-development","tag-personal-growth"],"acf":[],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO Premium plugin v22.4 (Yoast SEO v25.3.1) - https:\/\/yoast.com\/wordpress\/plugins\/seo\/ -->\n<title>Feeling stressed at work?
