{"id":30649,"date":"2018-09-04T18:27:24","date_gmt":"2018-09-04T22:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator\/?p=30649"},"modified":"2020-02-26T14:27:50","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T19:27:50","slug":"amigos-do-bem","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/amigos-do-bem","title":{"rendered":"In one of Brazil\u2019s poorest regions, \u2018kids and teenagers can dream\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When S\u00e3o Paulo business leader Alcione Albanesi decided to start a nonprofit organization back in 1993, little did she know that 25 years later it would be one of the best-known programs in Brazil.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAt the time, we couldn\u2019t have imagined where it would take us,\u201d says Albanesi, who started off her career as head of a successful lamp company.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amigosdobem.org\/en\/main\/\">Amigos do Bem<\/a>\u2014which translates as \u201cGood Friends\u201d\u2014has 8,600 volunteers working to help 60,000 Brazilians in Sert\u00e3o, one of the country\u2019s poorest areas. The semi-arid region sits in the northeastern part of the country.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Amigos do Bem | Creator Awards S\u00e3o Paulo 2018\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JXIbFL0xfVY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through volunteering, fundraising, and other efforts, Amigos de Bem serves 118 villages in the remote parts of the states of Alagoas, Pernambuco, and Cear\u00e1. Last year, Amigos do Bem received an award from Brazil\u2019s <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Epoca<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> magazine, which honors the 100 best non-governmental organizations in the country. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sert\u00e3o is a visually beautiful and enchanting place that has inspired some of Brazil\u2019s best literature and cinema, but it\u2019s also a region that throughout Brazil\u2019s history has suffered from natural disasters, poverty, and neglect.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there have been some serious improvements in recent years, including much-needed grants provided by the government, problems remain. Jobs are hard to come by, and many residents rely to varying degrees on subsistence agriculture to help them get by.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To make matters worse, two years ago the area suffered its worst drought in history. In 2014, Brazil was removed from the United Nations World Hunger map, but in Sert\u00e3o, there are many areas where hunger persists. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a difficult fight,\u201d says Albanesi, a resident of S\u00e3o Paulo. \u201cIt\u2019s really complex. Without a humane intervention, it\u2019s a pattern that repeats itself.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In partnership with leading supermarket chains in Brazil, Amigos do Bem donates 11,000 food baskets each month to poor families in the Sert\u00e3o region. But while the nonprofit started off with donations of food and clothing, it has expanded to offer housing and medical and dental care.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, the organization is focused on self-sustaining projects such as university scholarships that will benefit nearly 200 students. Most of them will be the first in their families to go on to higher education.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cToday, kids and teenagers in the region can dream,\u201d
