He got up to get another blanket.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next day, he saw his mother reading a newspaper with a headline about four homeless people who had died from the cold in S\u00e3o Paulo. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI started to understand my privileges at this moment,\u201d he says. \u201cI decided to go to the streets to talk with people who had survived the cold.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed-youtube wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Lavanderia | Creator Awards S\u00e3o Paulo 2018\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/kQ9asC5dHiw?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today he is president of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/institutoninhosocial\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instituto Ninho Social<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a nonprofit that works to meet the needs of S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s large homeless population. In the midst of a long and deep recession, the city has an estimated 30,000 homeless people, many of whom live under viaducts and beside highways.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instituto Ninho Social was one of the big winners at the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator-awards\/sao-paulo-creator-awards\">S\u00e3o Paulo Creator Awards<\/a>, sponsored by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wework.com\">WeWork<\/a>. The $72,000 prize will help the organization expand its programs.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Through its flagship program called \u201cDeliver for S\u00e3o Paulo,\u201d Instituto Ninho Social has a team of 150 volunteers that each month delivers more than 1,000 packages\u2014including a toothbrush and toothpaste, toilet paper, socks, mineral water, and a sandwich\u2014to homeless people. Extra blankets are also available for those who need them.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unlike its more tropical neighbor Rio de Janeiro, S\u00e3o Paulo has winters that more closely resembles many European capitals. The program has expanded to other cities in Brazil, including Santos, Campinas, Piracicaba, and Cuiaba. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30611\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/08\/Instituto-Ninho-Social-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30611\"\/><figcaption>Lucas Caldeira Brant de Tolentino helps the homeless through Instituto Ninho Social.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For Tolentino, one of the most important aspects of Instituto Ninho Social\u2019s outreach work is the interaction between the volunteers and the homeless.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe engagement helps build for a more humane city,\u201d he says. &nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucas is expanding Instituto Ninho Social to include \u201cProject Laundry,\u201d which will allow homeless people to wash their own clothes. It\u2019s something he says is extremely important for people\u2019s dignity. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s very difficult for homeless people to wash their clothes,\u201d says Tolentino. \u201cThey end up being worn until they are thrown away, which in some cases will be little more than a week.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Lucas, a laundry room would increase the lifespan of the donated clothes and therefore expand the resources of Instituto Ninho Social.
