{"id":30586,"date":"2018-08-30T13:21:31","date_gmt":"2018-08-30T17:21:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator\/?p=30586"},"modified":"2020-02-26T14:25:30","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T19:25:30","slug":"sao-paulo-creator-awards","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/sao-paulo-creator-awards","title":{"rendered":"S\u00e3o Paulo Creator Awards features defiant moments and lots of music"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When Luciano Huck, one of Brazil\u2019s most famous TV personalities, stepped onto the stage at the S\u00e3o Paulo<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/creatorawards.wework.com\/\">Creator Awards<\/a>, he was greeted with roaring applause from the crowd.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.wework.com\">WeWork<\/a> has arrived in Brazil on the right foot,\u201d he said, congratulating the company\u2019s cofounder Miguel McKelvey. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Creator Awards\u2019s first foray into South America was packed to the rafters with more than 1,000 people and showcased some of the best startup, nonprofit, and performing arts talent that Brazil\u2014a continent-sized nation of more than 200 million people\u2014has to offer. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30598\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/08\/WeWork-Sao-Paulo-Creator-Awards-3-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30598\"\/><figcaption>Hosts Luciano Huck and Lucy Ramos welcome the crowd to the S\u00e3o Paulo Creator Awards.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The event took place on August 28 in S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s legendary underground nightclub Audio, which hosts top music acts from rap to techno at its longtime location in the Barra Funda neighborhood. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A total of almost $800,000 was handed out to nine winners over the course of the evening\u2014three business ventures, three nonprofits, two performing artists, and one WeWork member who was lauded for community service. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30599\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/08\/WeWork-Sao-Paulo-Creator-Awards-1-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30599\"\/><figcaption>Joabe Cardoso was shocked when he was called to the stage and awarded a $36,000 prize for his service to the community.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some of the most unique and exciting highlights of the evening.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Most defiant moment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the business ventures category, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator-awards\/organic-food-pioneer-wins-big-at-sao-paulo-creator-awards\">Tom\u00e1s Abrah\u00e3o won $360,000 for his startup Ra\u00edzs<\/a>, which connects urban city dwellers with organic food producers. When a judge asked whether the organic food he works with is certified, Abrah\u00e3o replied: \u201cOrganic food shouldn\u2019t have to be certified. Food that contains pesticides should be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30600\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/08\/WeWork-Sao-Paulo-Creator-Awards-4-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30600\"\/><figcaption>Brazilian singer Tulipa Ruiz rocked the crowd with her hit \u201cI\u2019ll Stay a Little Bit Longer.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Best crowd-pleasing performance: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The crowd arrived ready for a show, and they weren\u2019t disappointed. The performing artist award went to Brazilian singer Tulipa Ruiz, who rocked the stage with a four-piece band to perform her hit \u201cI\u2019ll Stay a Little Bit Longer.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Most touching dedication: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Priscila Gama took home $180,000 in the business venture category for her startup Malalai, an app that helps women stay safer in cities by advising them about the best routes to take. She started strong in the first round, recounting stories about women being assaulted in Brazil. Progressing to the final round, she didn\u2019t flinch as she was grilled by the judges. She dedicated the prize to her mother and to \u201cthe women that can change the world.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30601\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/08\/WeWork-Sao-Paulo-Creator-Awards-2-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30601\"\/><figcaption>Lucas Caldeira took the top prize in the nonprofit category for his organization Instituto Ninho Social.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Best call to action: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Huck\u2014known as the Oprah of Brazil\u2014seemed especially moved by the mission of finalist Instituto Ninho Social, which works with the large homeless population in S\u00e3o Paulo. &#8220;What you are doing is so important because people often treat homeless people as criminals just because they are homeless,&#8221; he said. &nbsp;<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Best take on an old favorite: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the exception of the salmon and cream cheese wrap, all the snacks were vegetarian or vegan. A Brazilian classic like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kibe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014baked croquettes made from bulgur wheat\u2014was given a special twist, using mushrooms instead of ground beef.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30602\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/08\/WeWork-Sao-Paulo-Creator-Awards-5-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30602\"\/><figcaption>Closing out the evening was a performance by the Rio de Janeiro-based favela dance performance troupe Dream Team do Passinho.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Gutsiest move: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lucas Caldeira took the top prize in the nonprofit category for his organization <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instituto Ninho Social. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caldeira presented his idea for Project Laundry, which would give homeless people a place to wash their clothes. One of the judges was Brazilian billionaire Luiza Trajano, whose retail company Magazine Luiza happens to sell washing machines. After winning $72,000, Caldeira went down to where Trajano was seated to give her his business card.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Most bang for the buck: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Luiz Alberto Altmann Fazio took second place in the nonprofit category for his project called Biosaneamento, which builds low-cost, eco-friendly toilets for poor communities that are not connected to a sewer system. He announced that the $18,000 prize will allow him to expand the pilot program into more favela communities in Rio de Janeiro. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Longest lines:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> People queued up to collect free WeWork T-shirts and have professional portraits taken at the marketplace. Some of the favorite items on sale from the vendors: funky artisanal jewelry, hand-painted artwork, and designer dresses. McKelvey even bought a jacket from one vendor and wore it onstage.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Most heartwarming moment: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joabe Cardoso, who teaches English to people who can\u2019t afford lessons, was shocked when he was called to the stage and awarded a $36,000 prize for his service to the community. He burst into tears before thanking his mother and the crowd. He then recited, in Portuguese, President John F. Kennedy\u2019s famous quote: \u201cAsk not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Most jobs offered:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> At the job fair, more than 1,000 employment opportunities were on offer\u2014nearly a record for the Creator Awards. Attendees talked with representatives from companies like the local apartment rental service Quinto Andar, the marketing company Hi Platform, the information technology platform Tivit, and PARR, a service to help get S\u00e3o Paulo\u2019s growing refugee population find work.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Best closing act: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Closing out the evening was a performance by the Rio de Janeiro-based favela dance performance troupe Dream Team do Passinho.
