{"id":30466,"date":"2018-06-27T12:59:30","date_gmt":"2018-06-27T16:59:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/creator\/?p=30466"},"modified":"2020-02-26T14:32:48","modified_gmt":"2020-02-26T19:32:48","slug":"helping-veterans-heal-wounds-others-cant-see","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/member-spotlight\/helping-veterans-heal-wounds-others-cant-see","title":{"rendered":"Helping veterans heal wounds others can\u2019t see"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When former Marine Corps captain Zach Iscol went out for beers with his former commander, they talked about the 33 men in their battalion who had been killed in action in the Iraqi city of Fallujah in 2004.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, tragedy did not end there.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201c[We] realized that there\u2019d soon be a point in time when we\u2019d lost more Marines to suicide than to enemy action,\u201d Iscol says. \u201cIt\u2019s an epidemic.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That moment six years ago led to the founding of the<\/span> <a href=\"http:\/\/getheadstrong.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Headstrong Project<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a New York City-based nonprofit that helps veterans heal the wounds that have plagued so many of their lives as a result of the experience of war and beyond\u2014in particular, the effects of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today about<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ptsd.va.gov\/public\/ptsd-overview\/basics\/how-common-is-ptsd.asp\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">15 percent of the men and women who served in Iraq and Afghanistan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suffer from PTSD. And<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/fact-checker\/wp\/2015\/02\/04\/the-missing-context-behind-a-widely-cited-statistic-that-there-are-22-veteran-suicides-a-day\/?utm_term=.d9a23fa42f92\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">veteran suicides occur at an alarming rate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, with the Department of Veterans Affairs reporting that about 22 veterans kill themselves every day.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Iscol decided he wanted to do something about this problem by providing veterans with top-notch mental health care, free of charge. He joined forces with two staffers at Weill Cornell Medical College in New York City: Ann Beeder, a clinical psychiatrist who has treated patients suffering from trauma for more than two decades, and Gerard Ilaria, a licensed social worker and health care professional who has dedicated much of his career to caring for people with HIV. Together they co-founded Headstrong.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30469\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/06\/Headstrong-Gerard-Ilaria-and-Dustin-Shryock-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30469\"\/><figcaption>Gerard Ilaria and Dustin Shryock discuss strategy at Headstrong.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Headstrong, post-9\/11 veterans can receive confidential treatment at no cost, and without bureaucracy or paperwork\u2014or the stigma that often surrounds mental health counseling.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese are good people who have to make impossible life-and-death decisions,\u201d says Iscol, 39. \u201cAnd you have to live with those decisions. And when you\u2019re a good person it can be really hard to live with those decisions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no cap to the number of counseling sessions veterans can partake in. According to Iscol, the program currently has more than 500 veterans in treatment across 18 cities.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ve treated over 700 veterans in six years,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd we\u2019ve had zero suicides that have been in our treatment program.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ilaria said that helping veterans in the workplace is a big part of the program. It\u2019s an important part of getting their lives back on track.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cVeterans make excellent leaders and they\u2019re great on a team,\u201d says Ilaria, 57. \u201cBut they can\u2019t really do well at their job if their mental health isn\u2019t in order.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Todd Bowers, director of WeWork\u2019s Veterans Initiative, says that Headstrong is a valuable resource for veterans and their loved ones.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;By providing cost-free, bureaucracy-free, and stigma-free treatment for the hidden wounds of war, Headstrong and their incredible team have helped to shape the narrative around post-9\/11 veterans and their families by showing that the right help at the right time can heal anyone,&#8221; says Bowers, who was a staff sergeant with the Marine Corps serving in Iraq and Afghanistan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2  id=\"life-changed-in-the-blink-of-an-eye\"class=\"wp-block-heading\"><b><strong>Life \u2018changed in the blink of an eye\u2019<\/strong><\/b><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of Headstrong\u2019s success stories is Joe Quinn, who was a year away from graduating from West Point in 2001. But a week after he received his senior class ring, a celebratory event, the World Trade Center was attacked. \u201cIt all changed in the blink of an eye,\u201d Quinn says.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His 23-year-old brother Jimmy was on the 104th floor when Flight 11 hit the North Tower on September 11, 2001. A graduate of Manhattan College, Jimmy was working for Cantor Fitzgerald, a financial services firm whose offices occupied the 101st through 105th floors. The company lost 658 employees, including Quinn\u2019s brother. \u201cAll of the sudden there was this punch in the face,\u201d says Quinn. His classmates at West Point realized, as Quinn puts it, \u201cthat this is why we\u2019re here.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He graduated as a lieutenant and joined the Army, serving two tours in Iraq before being deployed in Afghanistan as a civilian counterinsurgency advisor for General David Petraeus. He then earned a master\u2019s degree in public policy from Harvard\u2019s Kennedy School and returned to West Point as an instructor at its Combatting Terrorism Center.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For 14 years Quinn held onto a complex set of feelings wrapped up in the grief of his brother\u2019s death and the experiences surrounding the deaths of many of his fellow soldiers. Quinn, now 38,<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/taskandpurpose.com\/i-learned-to-understand-shame-after-losing-my-brother-on-911\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">described in a personal essay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> how his feelings compounded and manifested repeatedly over the years: a heaviness in his chest; a warm flush of blood rising to his head; a sharp jolt of heat stinging his heart. He had PTSD. At first he thought he felt guilt, but eventually realized it was shame. \u201cI placed no value on myself, which led to depression and aggression,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI thought going to war would save me, but it made things worse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After referring numerous friends to Headstrong, Quinn decided in 2015 that it was time to seek help for himself there.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quinn now serves as the executive director of Headstrong, working from his office at<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/42nd-street--new-york-city--NY\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WeWork 42nd Street<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cI jump out of bed [to go to work],\u201d he says. Quinn, who grew up in Brooklyn, also<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.911memorial.org\/blog\/brother-911-victim-honors-him-through-annual-mets-game-tradition\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">continues the annual tradition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the \u201cJimmy Quinn Mets Game\u201d in which he and early 200 family and friends go to Citi Field in Queens for a ballgame.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quinn isn\u2019t the only member of Headstrong\u2019s management to seek help at his eventual place of employment. Dustin Shryock, the nonprofit\u2019s director of operations, served two tours in Iraq. During his second deployment in 2007 and 2008, he says his unit set a new record for the number of days in a row during which they were engaged with direct fire, indirect fire, mortar fire, and grenades.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Like many veterans, Shryrock, 35, had<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/soundcloud.com\/militarymortgagetalk\/012718-dustin-shryock-of-the-headstrong-project-part-1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trouble transitioning back to civilian life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He had left his home state of California for New York City, enrolling in graduate school, but was doing poorly, and began to notice that he was experiencing anxiety and depression. \u201cI was not going home anymore. I was staying out all night. I quit responding at work. [NYU] was about to kick me out because I\u2019d rather be at the bar than at class,\u201d says Shryrock, who also works from WeWork 42nd Street.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, in 2014, he sought help. \u201cI was actually told, \u2018You look sick.\u2019\u201d Friends referred him to Headstrong and he\u2019s never turned back\u2014first as a client and now running its day-to-day operations. \u201cThat\u2019s when you start to do the work,\u201d says Shryrock. \u201cYou address moral injury. Consistent bombardment or enemy fire. You address the absurdity of war.
