When his mother took her baby boy to auditions, he cried so much that the casting agents said thanks, but no thanks.<\/p>\n<p>But the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.makemusiccount.com\/\">Make Music Count<\/a> was able to to call his mother to tell her that he aced his second chance. Wearing a crisp blue suit and striped repp tie, he\u2019s featured in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jcrew.com\/mens_feature\/cheatsheet.jsp?sidecar=true\">photo spread for J.Crew<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI told her that back then, it just wasn\u2019t my time yet,\u201d said Blackwell, who says he\u2019s gotten numerous calls from friends asking whether he\u2019s switched careers.<\/p>\n<p>Blackwell is one of 11 founders \u2014 eight men and three women \u2014 in a variety of fields who are part of the campaign, a joint project between WeWork, J.Crew, and LinkedIn. The entrepreneurs are all members at WeWork locations across the country.<\/p>\n<p>The photos, which are currently on the J.Crew website, are just piece of the program, which will include events at WeWork locations in San Francisco, Atlanta, and New York. The first is a <a href=\"https:\/\/whatsyourworkstyle.splashthat.com\/\">panel discussion<\/a> featuring two of the models at San Francisco\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/embarcadero-center--sf-bay-area--CA\">WeWork Embarcadero Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The models were chosen from among the more than 200,000 WeWork members not just because they are standouts in their fields. Take Blackwell, a member at Atlanta\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/colony-square--atlanta--GA\">WeWork Colony Square<\/a>. His startup is a pioneering platform that teaches kids math through their favorite music \u2014 think of it as a math version of <em>Guitar Hero<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Blackwell says that when he entered New York\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/524-broadway--new-york-city--NY\">WeWork 524 Broadway<\/a>, he was surprised to see that the team had already transformed a large office into a temporary photo studio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI walked in and thought, \u2018Oh, this is the real deal,\u2019\u201d he says. He was one of a half a dozen models being shot that day, all of them being fitted with different items from J.Crew\u2019s new collection.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_J.Crew_shoot_Joseph_Amar.jpg?resize=1024%2C684\" alt=\"WeWork J.Crew shoot Joseph Amar\" width=\"1024\" height=\"684\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Designer Joseph Amar strikes a pose during the J.Crew shoot.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Cynthia Nimmo, President and CEO of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.womensfundingnetwork.org\/\">Women\u2019s Funding Network<\/a>, had a similar reaction when she arrived for her 7 a.m. call at San Francisco\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/soma--sf-bay-area--CA\">WeWork SOMA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was one of the oddest days I\u2019ve ever had,\u201d Nimmo says. \u201cI run an association of foundations that are dedicated to gender equality. This is completely different from my usual day at the office.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nimmo was the only model being shot that day, so the crew of about 10 people was dedicated to making her look great. One person was applying the finishing touches to her makeup as another was at a sewing machine making last-minute alterations to her outfit \u2014 a blazer, striped shirt, and wide-leg cropped pants. A team of photographers was nearby adjusting lights.<\/p>\n<p>The shoot started in a WeWork office, then moved to the street, where the cameras clicked away as she walked down the sidewalk and pretended to hail a taxi.<\/p>\n<figure style=\"width: 1024px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_J.Crew_shoot.jpg?resize=1024%2C768\" alt=\"WeWork J.Crew shoot\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">The crew checks the lighting for one of the shots.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cThey would shoot, take a look at the camera, and then try again from a different angle or with a different pose,\u201d she says. \u201cThe crew would ask me to put the handbag over my shoulder, or carry it in my hand. They definitely had in mind what each shot should look like.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The shoot lasted until 4:30, when Nimmo had to rush to a meeting. She says she was a little sad to leave the clothing for the shoot behind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI loved the clothes, but then again I love J.Crew,\u201d she says. \u201cI am moving all the time, walking in San Francisco from meeting to meeting, leading a discussion, or taking part in a focus group. I need clothes that are comfortable and look awesome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Michelle Dalzon, founder of <a href=\"http:\/\/ourbom.com\/\">theBOM<\/a>, says that many people have asked her if she\u2019s a model. This month <a href=\"https:\/\/hello.jcrew.com\/2018-02-february\/at-work-with-michelle-dalzon-of-the-black-owned-market\">her J.Crew photo spread<\/a> is just one of the times she\u2019s been in front of the cameras.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s weird because after I had this opportunity with J.Crew, and then another came up through Adidas,\u201d she says. \u201cWhat are the chances of that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dalzon, whose company puts together pop-up shops featuring black-owned businesses, says that she really enjoyed her shoot at Brooklyn\u2019s WeWork Montague Street.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy style is a little edgy,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd the team worked hard to choose a look that I thought looked like me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Her look for the shoot? A wrap shirt in a subtle shade of blue that she says perfectly reflected her own personal style.<\/p>\n<p>Now that she has two modeling gigs under her belt, will she be changing careers? Dalzon laughs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was fun,\u201d she says, \u201cbut I think I\u2019ll stick to what brings in the cash.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Photos: Ariel
