WeWork gave out $742,000 to five entrepreneurs and artists from San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin to take their life\u2019s work to the next level. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30270\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/05\/Adam-Neumann-sf-Creator-Awards-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30270\"\/><figcaption>Adam Neumann, co-founder of WeWork.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An estimated 1,500 attendees filled the building to watch entrepreneurs pitch their projects <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Shark Tank<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> style to judges including former vice-chair of General Electric Beth Comstock and MoviePass co-founder Hamet Watt. They also came to mingle with recruiters, buy handmade wares, take in wisdom from famous creatives, and dance to the music of St. Vincent and DJ Daddy Kat. Former <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Teen Vogue<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> editor-in-chief Elaine Welteroth (she\u2019s the one responsible for the magazine\u2019s wokeness) and WeWork CEO Adam Neumann\u2019s sister, model Adi Neumann, co-hosted. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because, as WeWork says, \u201cbig ideas deserve big celebrations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These were the biggest, best, and most inspiring moments: <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30272\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/05\/Natalie-Ellis-CEO-of-Boss-Babe-SF-Creator-Awards-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30272\"\/><figcaption>Natalie Ellis, CEO of Boss Babe.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Most encouraging advice for entrepreneurs:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAs long as you\u2019ve got an internet connection, there\u2019s no reason you cannot be building an empire from your laptop,\u201d Natalie Ellis, CEO of <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bossbabe.co\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Boss Babe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a community of female entrepreneurs, told the audience at a master class about disruption. She urged aspiring business owners not to obsess about trademarks, logos, or how many social media followers they have\u2014just take action. \u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Most surprising revelation:<\/b> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>Queer Eye<\/em><\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> style expert Tan France (a British Muslim) lives in Salt Lake City, Utah, with his Mormon husband. He also runs his ladies\u2019 apparel business from there. He told starstruck fans at the \u201cDesigning a BIG Life\u201d master class the decision was pragmatic. \u201cIf I\u2019m going to have a warehouse, it better be economical,\u201d France said. More importantly, that\u2019s where his husband is based\u2014\u201cand I really don\u2019t fancy divorces.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Why we all want to work for Kevin Rose now:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The serial entrepreneur, venture capitalist and self-described \u201cbiohacker\/longevity freak\u201d is working on a way to give employees bonuses for sleeping more (because while it may be a badge of honor to pull all-nighters in Silicon Valley, the research is pretty clear that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevinrose.com\/single-post\/matthew-walker\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sleep deprivation is cognitively akin to being drunk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More evidence Rose is serious about taking care of his staff outside the office: He told master class attendees he also gives his staff subsidies to buy their families flowers and to take Ubers for a night on the town. <\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30273\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/05\/Chloe-Alpert-founder-of-Medias-Heath-SF-Creator-Awards-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30273\"\/><figcaption>Chloe Alpert, founder of Medinas Health.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Top prize:<\/b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medinashealth.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Medinas Health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a Berkeley-based business helping hospitals sell surplus medical supplies to small clinics and nursing homes, took the $360,000 award for an established business venture. Since April 1, they\u2019ve started relationships with seven hospitals and closed $60,000 in sales. Chloe Alpert, the 26-year-old founder, said the WeWork money will pay for additional staff to work on solving other supply-chain challenges hospitals have identified.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30274\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/05\/Amin-Bahari-c0-founder-of-Elite-Sweets-SF-Creator-Awards-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30274\"\/><figcaption>Amin Bahari, co-founder of Elite Sweets.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Sweetest founder story:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Amin Bahari, a founder of \u201cperformance protein donut\u201d maker <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elitedonut.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elite Sweets<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, told the judges he was partly inspired by his own weight-loss journey to redefine how people see baked goods. The audience cheered when he shared that he lost 140 pounds in college, and that the high-protein donuts are made with almond flour, whey protein, and fiber and naturally sweetened with Stevia \u201cso my mother and grandmother could enjoy it.\u201d The judges were won over: The Austin, TX-based company garnered $180,000, which will allow them to move out of Bahari\u2019s parents house and into a commercial kitchen.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30276\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/05\/La-Cocina-SF-Creator-Awards-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30276\"\/><figcaption>La Cocina won in the nonprofit category.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Best news for women in the food industry: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mission District incubator kitchen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lacocinasf.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">La Cocina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in partnership with the city of San Francisco, will open the country\u2019s first all-women food hall in the Tenderloin next year. La Cocina, which helps low-income and immigrant women open restaurants, won the $130,000 nonprofit award. Jessica Mataka, La Cocina\u2019s development and communications manager, said the money will go toward a $4 million capital campaign to turn a shuttered post office into the food market.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignnone size-full wp-image-30277\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2018\/05\/Mason-Funk-founder-of-Outwords-SF-Creator-Awards-800x571.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30277\"\/><figcaption>Mason Funk, founder of Outwords.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Most likely to make LGBTQ history:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mason Funk, an L.A. filmmaker building a video archive of LGBTQ pioneers and elders across America called <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theoutwordsarchive.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outwords<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, won $36,000 as the Community Giver recipient. Funk, 59, choked up while accepting the award, which will pay for another round of interviews (so far, his team has captured the stories of 129 pioneers in 25 states) and begin to lay the groundwork for a searchable, digital platform. \u201cThe queer community has our own Greatest Generation,\u201d Funk said. \u201cI was seized by the passionate urgent desire to capture these stories while they\u2019re still alive to preserve them forever and share them with the world.\u201d \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><b>Best birthday present:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Winning the<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Performing Artist audience choice award. Lalen St. Juste, lead singer and lyricist with Bay Area electro-soul band <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.theseshen.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Seshen<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, turned 34 on Thursday. With the $36,000 award, the six-piece band will be able to buy a van to do their first national tour, timed to their third album set to release in early 2019. \u201cWe\u2019ve just been at this for a while,\u201d she said, crying backstage after winning. \u201cIt just feels li<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ke it\u2019s the universe saying, \u2018Keep going.
