education<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Working in a traditional K\u201312 setting, assistant librarian Chrystani Heinrich noticed that there was a lack of \u201creal-life\u201d training for youth when it came to practical things like how to open a bank account, or how to take care of yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Heinrich was inspired to use her experience to show girls something new. So in 2017, she founded the <a href=\"https:\/\/comptongirls.club\">Compton G.IRLS Club<\/a>, an after-school club based in Compton High School\u2019s library. Photographs courtesy of the subjects.<\/div>\r\n <\/div>\r\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s important to invest in our youth now, before they hit the real world with no adult training,\u201d Heinrich says. \u201cI always say, teenage me is my target audience.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As her organization has continued to grow over the past five years, Heinrich and her board have settled into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/222-pacific-coast-hwy--los-angeles--CA\">WeWork 222 Pacific Coast Hwy<\/a> in El Segundo, CA, and were proud winners of the WeWork Small Business Week Contest. \u201cWeWork has added legitimacy to our organization,\u201d she says. \u201cWhen we have a meeting or want to have a professional moment, we can say, \u2018Come to our office.\u2019 When that happens, funders, clients, and collaborators are immediately impressed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s another benefit as well. Being in an office allows Heinrich to get out of the house and into the mindset of being a CEO and founder of a nonprofit, she says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently, <a href=\"https:\/\/comptongirls.club\">Compton G.IRLS Club<\/a> created a seven-week program for Black pregnant teens and mothers to address the issue of Black infant mortality rates. The workshops focus on topics like breastfeeding and how to cook with supplies from government-funded programs, connecting pregnant women with one another. \u201cI am proud of my team for creating such a rewarding and peaceful space for these young mothers,\u201d Heinrich says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The work they do now won\u2019t just benefit the young people they reach directly\u2014it will have a wide-reaching and lasting impact, says Heinrich. \u201cBy creating independent and knowledgeable BIPOC youth that are confident and prepared to enter the real world, we are lowering rates of recidivism and homelessness,\u201d she says. \u201cThat then creates sustainable communities and neighborhoods. The DCYOP provides students with instruction and performance opportunities. personal responsibility\u2014last a lifetime. Their many alumni include renowned business leaders, nationally recognized authors, award-winning creators, and even Washington, D.C.\u2019s own mayor, Choi says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAs a relatively small organization, we really get to know our students and their families. We strive to support them, meet them where they are, and help make their musical journey a positive growth experience,\u201d Choi says.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Closer to home, the DCYOP staff recently moved their base of operations to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/midtown-center--washington-DC\">WeWork Midtown Center<\/a> in Washington, D.C., after winning the WeWork Small Business Week Contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will enable them to collaborate and innovate, \u201callowing us to grow our programming and serve our community more deeply,\u201d Choi says. The full staff is on-site once a week for team meetings, and each department is in the office a second day every week. They will be able to use their WeWork office for big physical projects that staff members need to complete together\u2014like compiling thousands of sheets of music for hundreds of students before rehearsals start for the new school year, Choi continues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After a dip in enrollment during the pandemic that was due largely to a pause in beginner lessons and some serious online-learning fatigue, the DCYOP student numbers were back up for the 2021\u201322 school year. Prolonged, sedentary, and isolated screen time has been shown to adversely impact young kids\u2019 cognitive and social development\u2014and the team at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.immersiva.co\">Immersiva<\/a> wanted to combat that. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They created interactive programming that helps kids navigate and thrive in relationships. Moore. \u201cIf we want kids to learn, we have to get them to school.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go Together\u2019s school-branded web and mobile apps allow parents within a given community to easily meet, organize, and schedule transportation.
