Even the most diehard sustainability guru couldn\u2019t help but watch, shocked and heartbroken, at the baby flamingo\u2019s unsuccessful trek across the salt flats in Netflix\u2019s Our Planet<\/em>, the latest docuseries exploring nature\u2019s wonders\u2014and the impact of humankind.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cClimate change and global warming are the ultimate \u2018side-effects\u2019 of irresponsible and unsustainable practices,\u201d says Shirannie Diaz, an operations coordinator for WeWork in Singapore. \u201cThe only way we can save the planet is through disruptive actions that reverse these effects.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can keep procrastinating setting up a way to compost in your tiny studio apartment, but as Diaz puts it, \u201cWhy do tomorrow what you can do today?\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Share your stuff<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being a conscious consumer is an integral part of living sustainably, explains Rebecca McPhail, who supports the financial-technology team at WeWork\u2019s Chelsea<\/a> HQ. And retail companies are making it easier to find sustainable fashion, upcycled furniture, and other eco-friendly products. \u201cSupport companies like Rent the Runway that are conscious about the way they produce and rent clothes,\u201d McPhail says.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Maria Ingaglio, a member of WeWork\u2019s strategic-events team, also at HQ, finds unique and trendy pieces by shopping at a thrift store. Her one wardrobe rule: \u201cAlways avoid fast-fashion,\u201d she says, noting that it\u2019s terrible for the environment, and often compromises workers’ rights.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diaz has another simple rule: one in, five out. \u201cFor every one piece of clothing I buy, I donate five items,\u201d she says.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Merrill Wing, a building-services manager at WeWork in Los Angeles, recently moved into a new apartment and furnished it with vintage finds. \u201cThese pieces are trendy, and I\u2019m doing a good thing for the planet,\u201d he says.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Recycle the right way<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Reality check: One unrinsed soup container can render an entire bag of plastic and paper unrecyclable. \u201cIf you don\u2019t recycle an item correctly, you might as well throw it in the trash,\u201d Wing says. So be sure that you\u2019re not throwing any<\/em> food waste in the recycling bin.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Do your research<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more you know, the more you\u2019ll care. \u201cListen to podcasts, seek out resources, be aware, and be conscious,\u201d says McPhail. Some of her favorites are The Minimalists<\/a>, Conscious Chatter<\/a>, and Good + Social<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ingaglio, who builds out sustainability strategies for large-scale WeWork events like Creator Awards and Global Summit, says her passion for the issue grew as she started learning more about it. \u201cI\u2019ve always been a tree-hugger,\u201d Ingaglio says, \u201cbut now I can\u2019t ignore it or turn a blind eye. It\u2019s present in each decision I make.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up, Wing\u2019s father managed landfills, and that experience kept waste concerns top of mind his entire life. \u201cThe trash you produce doesn\u2019t go away, and these landfills keep growing,\u201d he says.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Save a few bucks<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eco-friendly living can help preserve the planet and your budget. Jenn\u00e9 Blackburn, a community lead at WeWork 3200 Park Center Dr<\/a>, is always the first to recommend carpooling. \u201cIf we can carpool or share an Uber, we save money and keep our ecological footprint in check,\u201d she says.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Wing, who had a hand in replacing the plastic cups in WeWork buildings in the U.S., recommends buying unbreakable stainless steel cups for your home. \u201cRather than spending $10 on disposable plastic cups every month,\u201d Wing explains, \u201cbuy stainless steel cups once and within six months, you\u2019ll have saved $50.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We all know that drinking from a reusable water bottle eliminates the need to buy single-use plastic water bottles. But some of us get obsessed with one, then ditch it for another, then fall in love with yet another\u2026 \u201cBuying those items contributes to more generated waste,\u201d Diaz says. \u201cEven if the products aren\u2019t single-use, they\u2019re still plastic.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that in mind, Diaz carries a reusable bag in her backpack for last-minute errands. Not only is she keeping fewer paper or plastic shopping bags out of circulation, but she also saves a few cents every time, because many supermarkets charge you for the bags you use\u2014and others pay you for bringing your own.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5. Learn how to compost<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Composting doesn\u2019t have to be intimidating. \u201cYou don\u2019t even have to do it yourself,\u201d Ingaglio says. \u201cIn many places, you can drop your compost off at local community gardens and farmer\u2019s markets.\u201d She found hyperlocal composting opportunities by walking around her neighborhood, but sites like GrowNYC<\/a> in New York and Zero Waste<\/a> in Chicago also list dropoff locations.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Nail the follow-through<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saving water is a key component of an eco-friendly lifestyle: An average shower uses 5 gallons of water per minute. \u201cSet a timer for your shower to make sure you\u2019re not using too much water,\u201d Blackburn says. She limits her shower to five minutes and recommends reading<\/a> to provide more ways to limit your water usage.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Blackburn also tries to save power, so she avoids charging her phone overnight and keeps a reminder next to the front door to turn off all of the lights on her way out. Diaz shuts off the power supply to her TV and WiFi before going to work during the day and to sleep at night. \u201cMake sure all of your power strips are turned off,\u201d she says. \u201cThose little things pile up in terms of energy consumption.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Make it a get-together<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A beach cleanup with your friends (like the cleanup<\/a> WeWork employees organized in Los Angeles) will always be more enjoyable than a beach cleanup on your own. \u201cCreate meaningful experiences to get others involved,\u201d says Blackburn. \u201cGet everyone excited to be part of something change-worthy.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These experiences don\u2019t have to involve garbage or advance planning. When she can, Blackburn tries to meet friends at a restaurant rather than at someone\u2019s place for takeout. It\u2019s more enjoyable and mindful, and eliminates the need for styrofoam containers and single-use utensils.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

8. Set an example<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Discussing environmental impact has a dual purpose, says McPhail. It can help you hold yourself accountable and<\/em> spread information to those around you. \u201cMy actions can trickle down and impact others to do small things to help make the world a better place,\u201d she says.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnce you become a leader in this space, you can teach others best practices,\u201d adds Blackburn. \u201cAnd the impact will reverberate throughout the world.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
