Welcome to Community Corner,<\/strong> a series highlighting the work, passions, and impact of our community teams around the world.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Community manager Carol Piguin has always been comfortable around entrepreneurs\u2014eager to help them reach their full potential. It\u2019s something she learned from her dad.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMy father was really poor when he was born, and his family lived on a little farm in Sorocaba, but they didn\u2019t own it. It was a precarious situation,\u201d says Piguin, 28, who works at Sao Paulo\u2019s WeWork Na\u00e7\u00f5es Unidas 12901<\/a> in Brazil. \u201cHe went into programming, learned it on his own, and went to work for IBM. He changed his life.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This story inspired Piguin\u2019s own career. \u201cI realized how your environment can change a person\u2019s life, and that\u2019s how I began in startups,\u201d says Piguin, who holds an MBA and was working at a startup that was about to become a WeWork member when she realized she wanted to work for the company directly. \u201cI learned that WeWork wanted to [change people\u2019s lives]\u2014and I wanted to be part of that,\u201d she says. After successful interviews in 2017, she joined the team.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Around WeWork, Piguin is known for mentoring both WeWork members and her fellow employees. As community manager, she also tries to change cultural perceptions around work and what she believes is a lack of confidence. \u201cThere\u2019s a belief among people in Brazil that they aren’t good enough or aren\u2019t going to make it,\u201d she says. \u201cThat holds people down. I try to take this idea off them and open their minds.\u201d By listening to their insecurities and offering advice, she tries to help them personally (which she says can then lead to professional growth).
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Piguin also regularly schedules one-on-one conversations with others to help them succeed. She\u2019s especially proud of BossaBox<\/a>, a computer-programming company that started with just four people in December 2017. Fast forward to 2019 and it\u2019s grown to a team of 10 people. This year, the company\u2019s poised for even more growth.

Piguin regularly grabs coffee with BossaBox\u2019s founder, Giovani Salvador. They talk about success, problems the company\u2019s facing, books, and more. \u201cIt\u2019s a friendship, really,\u201d she says. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t seem like work.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Those coffee dates led to a greater partnership for BossaBox. \u201cWe started to exchange contacts and members to reach out to,\u201d says Piguin. \u201cAs a community, we always encourage members to search [and use] services within WeWork.\u201d Eventually, Talita Passos, one of WeWork\u2019s enterprise sales leads, conducted sales mentoring sessions with BossaBox to help it automate its processes.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cBossaBox closed deals with several members in different locations,\u201d Piguin says. \u201cBeing in a position where I can help big companies engage better with startups and [help] startups engage better with big companies is such an opportunity. It\u2019s a blessing, really.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We asked Piguin to share her favorite hobbies outside WeWork, her core values, and more.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Main interests: <\/strong>Nature. \u201cI have ADD, so nature really calms me and puts me in my center,\u201d she says. \u201cI like to garden.\u201d She began gardening last year and has even made perfumes and soaps from the herbs she\u2019s grown on the balcony of her apartment. She has also started a small succulent garden with her fellow WeWork employees.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Favorite place to visit:<\/strong> Bahia, which is about two hours away from S\u00e3o Paulo. \u201cI love Bahia here in Brazil. Great weather, great nature. I go to the beaches, I eat a lot; I love the food there. I don\u2019t know every beach there, but I love the nature of Bahia.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her communities:<\/strong> \u201cI am a member of the LGBT community, and I am bisexual.\u201d For Piguin, being authentic about her sexuality at work and the fact that she has a wife has been a powerful experience, especially since she felt the need to hide her real self in previous jobs. \u201cI\u2019m free to be who I am and just do my best work,\u201d she says. Along with that community, Piguin says her wife is a huge fan of the Carnival community in Brazil, which sparked her own passion for the annual festival. \u201cI love Carnival and everything that\u2019s related,\u201d she says.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her core values:<\/strong> \u201cI believe in equality and justice,\u201d says Piguin. \u201cI want to be treated fairly\u2014and for others to have the same opportunities I have.\u201d It\u2019s not always easy for Piguin, who admits she\u2019s \u201cvery shy\u201d most of the time. But that quality doesn\u2019t stop her. \u201cEvery time I see someone who might need help, I feel like it is my duty to brighten their day. I didn’t realize my full potential in the past, and I’ve learned that the only thing holding me back was myself,\u201d she explains. \u201cI don’t want anyone to fall into the same trap.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
