Superpower on the Side<\/b> is a series that features WeWork team members and how they spend their time when they’re not at work.<\/i><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Growing up in a predominately Asian-American community in Diamond Bar, California, Elton Kwok\u2014like many children of immigrants\u2014had a preordained plan mapped out for him: Pursue a degree in a safe and sound career, and go on to a stable job. The plan didn\u2019t include discovering the vocation that spoke to his heart\u2014or, in the words he often utters on \u201cFish Sauce,\u201d his influential podcast, letting his \u201csecret sauce\u201d shine.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His transformative moment happened one night on a New York City street, as he was walking past WeWork\u2019s Chelsea<\/a> HQ. Kwok, who had a degree in engineering and a job in finance, struck up a conversation with an employee leaving the building\u2014and before he knew it he was throwing caution to the wind, joining WeWork when it was still essentially in startup mode, much to his parents\u2019 initial dismay.
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhen I was studying civil engineering, I wanted to build hotels; the hospitality industry and things related to it always interested me,\u201d says Kwok, now a general manager at WeWork, where he ensures the health of the business in Northern California. \u201cIt felt like WeWork might be the perfect company to join because it was workspace tied with community, hospitality paired with technology.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The idea of joining a company built around shared workspaces spoke to Kwok\u2019s own secret sauce: curiosity. \u201cI\u2019ve always been curious as to how I can help others, how can I learn from others,\u201d he says. \u201cThere are so many intricacies and differences in the world that you only become a better version of yourself if you\u2019re able to learn from everything that\u2019s around you.\u201d

It wasn\u2019t enough for Kwok to pursue his own passion\u2014with his \u201cFish Sauce\u201d podcast, co-hosted by his friend Wilson Kyi (also a child of Asian immigrants), he\u2019s inspiring others to pursue their dreams. \u201cGrowing up as an Asian-American, people lean more toward the conservative side versus risk-taking,\u201d explains Kwok. \u201cWe wanted to inspire our peers to find out what their secret sauce was\u2014what was special to them\u2014and take that risk so they can do what they love on a day-to-day basis.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kwok and Kyi clock long hours after work and on weekends to secure the most compelling guests they can think of. One recent guest was Justin Kan, the founder of Justin.tv and Twitch.tv, which were acquired by Amazon in 2014 for nearly $1 billion. \u201cThe title of that podcast episode is called \u2018The World\u2019s Greatest Hype Man.\u2019 [Kan] thinks about everything he does in terms of: How do we hype it and get traction?\u201d Kwok says. \u201cHe shared a lot about making an impact as an entrepreneur, as well as being a person who can build relationships and sell anything. That was definitely helpful for me, and for a lot of our listeners.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another guest whose story moved Kwok was Lisa Fetterman, who created the Wi-Fi-enabled Nomiku sous vide machine. \u201cThrough the telling of her story on the podcast we heard the number of \u2018nos\u2019 she got,\u201d Kwok says. \u201cShe overcame all of these situations and now she has a best seller on Amazon, and she got a deal on \u2018Fish Tank\u2019\u2014[laughs] that\u2019s \u2018Shark Tank,\u2019 not \u2018Fish Tank\u2019!\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After just over two years, \u201cFish Sauce\u201d has an impressive 10,000 monthly subscribers. \u201cThe most rewarding thing has been developing a community of thought partners,\u201d Kwok says. \u201cWe\u2019ve been able to build a community within a community, which is amazing. Through the \u2018Fish Sauce\u2019 network, we\u2019ve been introduced to a platform of other successful entrepreneurs, investors, and operators that have a reason to talk to one another. It\u2019s more than a podcast\u2014it\u2019s become a movement.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Currently, this movement is a labor of love done \u201cpurely for the fun of it,\u201d notes Kwok. But looking forward, he wants his baby to grow. \u201cWe definitely hope to get other brand partners involved, to scale the podcast even further, and to eventually sell merchandise,\u201d he says. \u201cThese are all long-term plans that hopefully we\u2019ll be able to integrate into the platform.\u201d
<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Who knows? Maybe they\u2019ll even have that \u201cFish Tank\u201d in the end.
