{"id":3000004454,"date":"2019-02-28T10:38:46","date_gmt":"2019-02-28T15:38:46","guid":{"rendered":"\/newsroom\/?p=3000004454"},"modified":"2020-03-30T17:58:20","modified_gmt":"2020-03-30T21:58:20","slug":"to-inspire-the-next-generation-of-creators-start-with-students","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/community-stories\/employee-spotlight\/to-inspire-the-next-generation-of-creators-start-with-students","title":{"rendered":"To inspire the next generation of creators, start with students"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When he was asked to join the executive board of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.buildinboston.org\/\">BUILD Boston<\/a>, a nonprofit that gives real-life entrepreneurial experiences to high school students, Alexis Miller didn\u2019t have to think twice.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI want to do my part to help realize the next generation of creators,\u201d says Miller, director of operations for the Northeast and Mid-atlantic regions of WeWork. \u201cThey are depending on us, and the world is depending on them.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A Delaware native, Miller remembers his own experience attending high school in Wilmington, noting that \u201cit was small but had big-city problems.\u201d Even now, a<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/2017\/09\/08\/wilmington-delaware-leads-u-s-teen-shootings\/619458001\/\"> recent USA today analysis<\/a> reveals that Wilmington leads the country in its rate of shootings among young people under 18.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller says that he wishes he had access to a program like BUILD Boston, which helps young people start their own businesses, when he was a teenager.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt would have expanded my worldview, enhanced my engagement, and accelerated my skill set and confidence,\u201d says Miller. \u201cIt took me 10 years after high school to learn many of the skills and lessons that BUILD students learn during their four years in the program.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>BUILD students come up with some innovative business ideas. Miller, who\u2019s been working with the organization for two years, remembers some students who focused their energies on improving a common kitchen item: the potholder. The result, he says, was impressive. Instead of making a better holder for your hand, he says, \u201cthey made a holder that fits over the pot handle.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller knows what it takes to get a company off the ground. In 2013 the graduate of New York\u2019s Fordham University founded <a href=\"https:\/\/inspirado.co\/\">Inspirado<\/a>, an e-commerce site featuring posters, pillows, and other items emblazoned with inspirational slogans like, \u201cLive for a cause and not for applause.\u201d He still runs Inspirado in his spare time.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cStarting my company was amazing and really tough at the same time,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was the first time that I learned how to do many things outside of my core competencies, and I loved that constant learning and growth.\u201d<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He joined WeWork in 2015, starting out as an assistant community manager, and steadily moved up the ranks, leading his own building as community manager and then serving as director of community for the Greater Boston area. Since then he\u2019s helped to open or manage more than 30 WeWork locations from Toronto to Washington, D.C.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A little over a year ago Miller was promoted to director of operations for the region. He is well known in the business community, having been recently nominated as one of Boston Chamber of Commerce\u2019s Top Young Leaders, and was named one of Get Konnected\u2019s 25 Most Influential Millennials of Color in Boston.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Miller\u2019s relationship with BUILD started when the organization moved into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/745-atlantic-ave--boston--MA\">WeWork 745 Atlantic Ave<\/a> in 2017. \u201cIt was immediately evident to me how impactful the program is for our public school students,\u201d he says.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ed Wilson, BUILD Boston\u2019s director of philanthropy, says the \u201cstrong partnership\u201d with WeWork has helped his organization make contacts it wouldn\u2019t have had access to otherwise. Miller in particular, he says, has been \u201ca great friend and an invaluable advocate for our work.\u201d <br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Miller, the benefits go both ways. \u201cWe have created something valuable for the community,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s been an opportunity to help elevate one another.\u201d<br><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>WeWork\u2019s Alexis Miller
