Today, we are proud to share our global Season of Service initiative, a new program that gives our thousands of employees a day off to support their local communities and give back in a way that feels personally meaningful. Since the beginning of December, WeWork employees around the world have volunteered at company-organized events or dedicated time to a charity of their choice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe there\u2019s a time to receive and a time to give back,\u201d says China\u2019s impact lead Joshua Li, whose team hosted a holiday market with <a href=\"https:\/\/wish.org\/\">Make a Wish<\/a> to support children with life-threatening illnesses. &#8220;Season of Service reinforces that he\u2019s \u201cnot alone in this mission of making the world a better place.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/sc-KrhXyilo\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>While teams are engaging around the world in a variety of ways with local partners to service local needs, we are united in our commitment to giving back. Ella Bowman, WeWork\u2019s consumer communications lead in London, observes that doing good is \u201cso crucial to the world we live in,\u201d and equally as important is &#8220;intending that goodness and bringing consciousness to what you\u2019re doing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Addressing the need for shelter was a catalyst for many Season of Service projects. In California, where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/creator\/inspiration\/during-california-wildfires-delivering-hot-meals-a-place-to-stay-and-hope\/\">wildfires devastated swaths of Los Angeles and Ventura counties<\/a>, thousands lost their homes, including members of the WeWork community. \u201cEverybody knows someone who was evacuated,\u201d says Alayna Parker, a community manager for WeWork. \u201cThe fires touched everyone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through the end of January, employees and members at 21 WeWork locations in Southern California are donating money to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.habitat.org\/\">Habitat for Humanity<\/a> to help rebuild homes destroyed by the fires. The goal is for each building to raise at least $500, resulting in more than $10,000.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_China_Christmas_market.jpg\" alt=\"WeWork China Christmas market\" class=\"wp-image-3000002399\"\/><figcaption>WeWork China partnered with Make a Wish for a holiday market benefiting children with life-threatening illnesses.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>\u201cNatural disasters can hit anybody at any moment,\u201d says Parker. \u201cIt\u2019s something I always keep in the front of my mind\u2014that it could be me or my family in this situation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Eli de Souza, a marketing lead at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/visconde-de-piraja-495--rio-de-janeiro\">WeWork Ipanema<\/a>, along with a group of his colleagues, spent nine hours building a prefabricated home for a family in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in partnership with <a href=\"https:\/\/us.techo.org\/\">TECHO<\/a>, a charity that builds homes for families living in the city\u2019s poorest neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf they don\u2019t have a roof over their head, they will die,\u201d says de Souza. \u201cThey had nothing\u2014no food, no water\u2014but now they have a roof, a place to stay. It completely changed their lives.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_Brazil_team_Season_of_Giving.jpg\" alt=\"WeWork Brazil team Season of Giving\" class=\"wp-image-3000002400\"\/><figcaption>In Brazil, employees at WeWork in Rio de Janeiro built a prefabricated home.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>Supporting organizations that help children in need is another common goal for WeWork employees around the world. In Chicago, for example, team members have partnered with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tutoringchicago.org\/\">Tutoring Chicago<\/a> to provide one-on-one mentoring to children from economically disadvantaged families. WeWork Boston employees are volunteering with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrenshospital.org\/\">Boston Children\u2019s Hospital<\/a>. And the WeWork team in Atlanta has joined forces with <a href=\"http:\/\/camptwinlakes.org\/\">Camp Twin Lakes<\/a> to support summer programs for children with disabilities, serious illnesses, and other challenges.<\/p>\n<p>In New York\u2019s Harlem neighborhood, WeWork is hosting two holiday parties with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.childrensaidnyc.org\/\">Children\u2019s Aid<\/a>, a nonprofit providing a variety of resources to children from financially challenged families. Each child in attendance will receive a gift. \u201cVery often it\u2019s the only gift that they will receive,\u201d says Nicole Sizemore, senior manager of public affairs at WeWork.<\/p>\n<p>Employees at Lima\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/real-2--lima\">WeWork Real 2<\/a> launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WeWorkPeru\/videos\/goles-que-impactan-final\/2071850323068241\/\">Goles que Impactan<\/a>, a Latin American initiative that restores one community soccer field for every victory a country racked up during the 2018 FIFA World Cup. Nicole Huby and Alvaro Castro, who lead the local impact team, worked with colleagues during Season of Service to revitalize a field in El Callao. Schoolchildren from the neighborhood joined their work to replace sod, repaint walls, and draw new boundary markers.<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_Peru_employees_repair_soccer_field.jpg\" alt=\"WeWork Peru employees repair soccer field\" class=\"wp-image-3000002401\"\/><figcaption>A team from Lima\u2019s WeWork Real 2 refurbished a soccer field.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>\u201cIt feels amazing,\u201d says Castro of the project. \u201cI\u2019m doing something not just for me, but for someone else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Helping local children is also the focus for employees from all 10 WeWork locations in Mexico City. On Dec. 17, a group of volunteers delivered toys to the <a href=\"https:\/\/vuela.org.mx\/contacto\/\">Vuela Fundaci\u00f3n<\/a>, a hospital specializing in treating children with cancer. And on Jan. 18, they will drop off supplies at a school called <a href=\"https:\/\/diezmorodo.org\/SFSCMS\/Content\/Id\/instituto-nevadi\">Instituto Nevadi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never thought I\u2019d be as involved as I am now,\u201d says WeWork employee Sofia Pardo, who is leading the effort with colleague Mariana Santana. \u201cIt makes me want to cry every time I see how small things you can do can bring so much change.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_employees_picking_up_a_riverbank_in_Delhi.jpg\" alt=\"WeWork employees picking up a riverbank in Delhi\" class=\"wp-image-3000002402\"\/><figcaption>In Delhi, WeWork employees cleaned up a riverbank.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>All WeWork locations in India are participating in toy drives this month. It\u2019s a continuation of the team\u2019s work throughout the year, which has included cleaning up a beach in Mumbai, picking up trash at a riverbank in Delhi, and repainting walls along a busy street in Bengaluru.
