It was the second year in a row the awards have been held in London.<\/p>\n<p>The London Creator Awards is the 14th incarnation of WeWork\u2019s signature global event. Millions of dollars have been awarded to over 200 winners around the world since the pitch contest was established in March 2017, including 31 British and Irish winners.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_Creator_Awards_London_masterclass_-_Scott_Harrison__Emma_Gannon__Joshua_Coombes.jpg\" alt=\"WeWork Creator Awards London masterclass - Scott Harrison, Emma Gannon, Joshua Coombes\"><strong>Entrepreneurs Scott Harrison, Emma Gannon, and Joshua Coombes speak at a masterclass called &#8220;Passion to Purpose.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Along with cheering on the inspiring winners during the star-studded ceremony, attendees made promising connections at the <a href=\"https:\/\/jobbio.com\/\">Jobbio<\/a> job fair, socialized at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.meetup.com\/\">Meetup<\/a>-sponsored Togetherfest, and got tips from the top in the masterclass featuring WeWork cofounder Miguel McKelvey.<\/p>\n<p>In an evening of superlatives, here are our favorite moments: the ones that made us laugh, gasp, whoop, and cry.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nostalgia to the max:<\/strong> There\u2019s nothing quite like being part of a 4,000-strong crowd singing along to Wheatus\u2019s 2000 hit \u201cTeenage Dirtbag\u201d as played by a brass band, No Limit Street Band, who opened the ceremony.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_Creator_Awards_London_-_No_Limit_Street_Band.jpg\" alt=\"WeWork Creator Awards London - No Limit Street Band\"><strong>The No Limit Street Band performs its rendition of Wheatus\u2019s 2000 hit \u201cTeenage Dirtbag.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Best history lesson:<\/strong> Kutcher told the bittersweet story of beloved 19th-century British engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, who had an almighty failure with a railway that he couldn\u2019t make work because he couldn\u2019t \u201cbreak the platform that existed.\u201d Kutcher explained: \u201cSometimes the world smacks you in the face with a platform or regulation or competition that you cannot overcome. But that doesn\u2019t mean you put your hand down. You keep putting your hand up and you keep building.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most creative swag:<\/strong> The team from open access screen-printing studio <a href=\"https:\/\/www.3rdrailprintspace.co.uk\/\">3rd Rail Print Space<\/a> were kept busy all night long printing T-shirts for attendees.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Best lightbulb moment:<\/strong> \u201cIt\u2019s the human stories, not the statistics, that move people,\u201d said Joshua Coombes, founder of the #DoSomethingForNothing campaign, as part of a masterclass discussion on how to spread the word about your venture. He spoke at a masterclass called &#8220;Passion to Purpose&#8221; with Scott Harrison and Emma Gannon.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/Creator_Awards_London_-_Afrocenchix.jpg\" alt=\"Creator Awards London - Afrocenchix\"><strong>Joycelyn Mate celebrates when her company Afrocenchix wins the top prize.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Biggest surprise:<\/strong> Joshua Ogunnote, plucked at random from the crowd and invited to pitch by Kutcher, was awarded $18,000 to grow his music sharing social network called <a href=\"https:\/\/chune.co.uk\/\">Chune<\/a>. Ogunnote only found out about the awards by chance on the day of the ceremony because a friend of a friend had a spare ticket. How\u2019s that for serendipity?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Funniest overheard remark:<\/strong> \u201cI\u2019ve decided I don\u2019t actually need to pee. I can\u2019t be bothered to take off this jumpsuit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most transformative opportunities:<\/strong> Who knows how many sales will be made, jobs will be won, and contracts agreed to as a result of the one-to-one website consultations from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.squarespace.com\/\">Squarespace<\/a> and headshots from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cityhousefilms.com\/portfolio\">City House Films<\/a>, both offered for free to attendees?<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_Creator_Awards_London_-_Joshua_Ogunnote_of_Chune.jpg\" alt=\"WeWork Creator Awards London - Joshua Ogunnote of Chune\"><strong>Joshua Ogunnote, plucked at random from the crowd, wins $18,000 to grow his music sharing social network.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Biggest winners:<\/strong> Rachael Corson and Joycelyn Mate of <a href=\"https:\/\/afrocenchix.com\/\">Afrocenchix<\/a>, which makes natural products for people with curly or kinky hair, garnered the largest prize of the night, winning $360,000 in the Business Venture category. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.changeplease.org\/\">Change Please<\/a>, which helps people out of homelessness by training them as baristas, was the big winner in the Nonprofit category, taking home $72,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Most impressive response to grilling by judges:<\/strong> Lorel Quinn, founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sustainably.co\/\">Sustainably<\/a>, was quick to set the record straight about the way her charitable giving platform currently charges its users after questioning by <a href=\"https:\/\/monzo.com\/\">Monzo<\/a> cofounder Jonas Templestein. Her coolness under pressure may have been one of the reasons that Templestein and his fellow judges decided to reward Sustainably with funding of $180,000.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Social media lifesaver:<\/strong> With all the famous faces, photo opportunities, and shareable moments, attendees\u2019 phone batteries were running on empty. Thank goodness, therefore, for the presence of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chargedup.green\/\">ChargedUp<\/a>, which lent battery packs and cables for charging on the go.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_Creator_Awards_London_-_Change_Please.jpg\" alt=\"WeWork Creator Awards London - Change Please\"><strong>Change Please, which helps people out of homelessness by training them as baristas, is the big winner in the Nonprofit category.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Most emotional moment:<\/strong> As McKelvey introduced a short film about last year\u2019s London Creator Award winner <a href=\"https:\/\/andiamo.io\/\">Andiamo<\/a>, he told attendees that watching it had brought him to tears. Sure enough, there wasn\u2019t a dry eye in the house as Andiamo cofounders Samiya and Naveed Parvez described founding a company to make orthoses for children with disabilities. When 13-year-old Jack Gower, a boy whose life has been transformed with Andiamo\u2019s 3D-printed braces, joined the Parvezes on stage with his mother, the audience leapt to its feet to give the foursome a standing ovation.
