She was a mentor in a new program for disadvantaged students being hosted by WeWork London.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It&#8217;s hard as a mentor to know exactly how to make the biggest impact in just a few days,&#8221; she says, &#8220;so we took some time getting to know him and how he spends his spare time outside of school.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>What Targett discovered was that Darnell enjoyed making videos, but wasn&#8217;t aware that this could be a viable career path for him.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We gave him the tools and the support, but left him to his own devices to bring his creativity to life,&#8221; she says. &#8220;He completed a video project for us which told the story of what our company does, through the eyes of someone new. It blew us away!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_London_mentorship_program_1.jpg\" alt=\"WeWork London mentorship program 1\" class=\"wp-image-3000002302\"\/><figcaption>The mentorship program is a partnership between WeWork London, Hackney Council, and The Diana Award.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s how everyone knew that the mentorship program\u2014a partnership between WeWork London, <a href=\"https:\/\/hackney.gov.uk\/\">Hackney Council<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/diana-award.org.uk\/\">The Diana Award<\/a>\u2014was a success. The program kicked off for a week in July and was such a hit that it\u2019s returning again in time for <a href=\"https:\/\/nationalmentoringday.org\/\">National Mentoring Day<\/a> on Oct. 27.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re excited to have launched our mentoring programme with Hackney Council and the Diana Award,\u201d says Anthony Yazbeck, WeWork\u2019s COO for Europe, the Pacific, and China. \u201cWe believe it&#8217;s essential to give young people access to the knowledge and skills they need to thrive in the future world of work.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The week of activities, which takes place in 10 different WeWork locations across the city, matches students from two area schools with mentors from WeWork member companies. A total of about 60 students have participated in the program.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"empowering-young-people\">Empowering young people<\/h2>\n<p>The program\u2019s three partners all have one goal in mind: helping train the next generation of leaders. Hackney Council\u2019s employment and skills-based program works to tackle poverty and inequality, providing people with opportunities for career development. The Diana Award, a member at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/buildings\/1-mark-sq--london\">WeWork 1 Mark Sq<\/a>, is a charity established by the British government in memory of the late Princess of Wales to empower young people.<\/p>\n<p>Noting that \u201cthe world of work is changing,\u201d Delali Mortty, partnerships and development coordinator for The Diana Award, says her organization partnered with WeWork \u201cto push mobility into the lives of young people who might be disengaged and lacking in schools and tools to succeed.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.wework.com\/ideas\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/4\/2019\/12\/WeWork_London_mentorship_program_2.jpg\" alt=\"WeWork London mentorship program 2\" class=\"wp-image-3000002303\"\/><figcaption>The mentorship program is designed \u201cto push mobility into the lives of young people who might be disengaged and lacking in schools and tools to succeed.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n<p>\u201cThe students benefit from seeing the inside of WeWork,\u201d Mortty says. \u201cWe wanted to give young people an accurate vision of their options.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tailored to the individual needs of each student, the program included workshops on important skills, mock job interviews, and talks from prominent leaders in the community, such as entrepreneur and youth activist Jeremiah Emmanuel; The Diana Award CEO Tessy Ojo, and Leni Zneimer, WeWork\u2019s general manager of the UK and Ireland.<\/p>\n<p>Knowing that coding will be a required skill in the not-so-distant future, <a href=\"https:\/\/flatironschool.com\/\">Flatiron School<\/a>\u2014which launched its first location in London earlier this year\u2014offered condensed coding classes as well.<\/p>\n<p>Mortty says her team at The Diana Award is focusing more on building skills in general. That\u2019s why the partnership at WeWork is so important.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to diversify people\u2019s way of learning, so they can pick up practical skills, new ideas,\u201d she says. \u201cWe really are moving away from the old idea of work placement.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"business-leaders-step-forward\">Business leaders step forward<\/h2>\n<p>Mentors came from 10 different WeWork member companies, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.privitar.com\/\">Privatar<\/a>, a privacy protection company, and the startup <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teardusk.com\/\">Teardusk<\/a>, a social enterprise and creative agency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents from underprivileged backgrounds resonate with us because we\u2019re trying to make education more affordable,\u201d says Gauthier Van Mal, co-founder of UK-based <a href=\"https:\/\/www.perlego.com\/\">Perlego<\/a>, a year-old startup known as the \u201cSpotify for textbooks.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Members of Van Mal\u2019s team worked with several of the students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne took over our Twitter account for the day,\u201d Van Mal recalls. \u201cOne person was interested in coding, so we gave her a coding class for an hour and 150 lines of code.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mortty described the five-day program as \u201cmagic.\u201d Like the 15 year old with a passion for making videos, many of the students uncovered hidden skills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all about trust,\u201d she says. \u201cBy the end of the week, we can see how much they\u2019ve grown.
