For Natalie Egan, the internet used to be a frightening place. This was back when she was living as a man, and she was terrified that some small detail of her life \u2014 like her browser history filled with websites selling women\u2019s clothing \u2014 might give her away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why I was constantly in fear of being outed as trans,\u201d she said. \u201cThe way I approached the internet was very, very cautiously.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Two years ago she came out, changing all her social media profiles to reflect her female identity. The outpouring of support she felt online was a \u201cmilestone.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A WeWork<\/a> member, Egan is the founder of a diversity and inclusion tech platform called Translator<\/a>. She was one of four speakers on a fast-paced panel discussion called \u201cPreserving the Digital Lifeline for LGBTQ People,\u201d held at New York\u2019s WeWork Fulton Center<\/a>. Along with WeWork, the event was sponsored by GLAAD, the Webby Awards, and Cond\u00e9 Nast\u2019s new LGBTQ website Them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moderator Meredith Talusan, senior editor of Them<\/a>, said that without the openness of the internet, she might not have come out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWithout net neutrality, it\u2019s possible I might not be trans,\u201d said Talusan. \u201cIt\u2019s possible that the online communities essential for me to be able to transition might not have been there in the first place.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s the power of technology for many people. It\u2019s a connection to the larger community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe see everyday that the internet is a place to see the role models we can\u2019t see in real life,\u201d said Jim Halloran, chief digital officer of the LGBTQ advocacy group GLAAD<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s especially true for those living in rural areas.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But despite all its benefits for the LGBT community, the internet is still a place where there\u2019s plenty of bias \u2014 some intentional, some not. David-Michel Davies, executive director of the Webby Awards<\/a>, said that algorithms designed to target potential candidates for high-paying jobs, for example, might overlook LGBTQ people.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat\u2019s because the way they built the algorithm was how they did it in the past,\u201d Davies said. \u201cIt\u2019s a huge, huge issue.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another issue is how forces on the internet working to get pro-LGBTQ messages silenced. Halloran recounted how a video his organization posted of actor Debra Messing accepting a GLAAD Award got nearly a million views \u2014 primarily because of an organized campaign designed to make it less likely to be shared on YouTube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThey are trying to systematically affect the algorithms so our content isn\u2019t shared in our own community,\u201d said Halloran. \u201cThis isn\u2019t a huge group of people, either. It\u2019s a small number of bad actors using sophisticated digital tools.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The solution? According to Halloran, it\u2019s getting a more diverse group of people behind the scenes at tech companies where a lot of these decisions are made. He announced that GLAAD has formed a digital task force<\/a> of advocacy groups, tech companies, and community leaders to combat online anti-LGBTQ bias.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe important thing is keeping this conversation going,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t think one person or one entity has to shoulder the burden. It\u2019s not just the tech companies or the government. It\u2019s all of our shared responsibility.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
